As a native Detroiter, it is great to see restoration, rather than demolition! Congratulations Ford!!

New Yorker here, but it's truly spectacular what Ford is doing with Michigan Central. For years I had hoped to see this building restored and it's finally happening

I’m so grateful Ford purchased and is restoring this national treasure. We’ve lost enough of these late 19th Century/early 20th Beaux-Arts masterpieces of American architecture. Truly it was the height of class in terms of urban design over a century ago. The foundations and masonry on structures from around this time are certainly in a league of its own in terms of longevity and permanence. Modern corporate high raises would deteriorative within a half decade without regular maintenance; these old giants withstand decades of abuse and the elements and still lay waiting for rehabilitation.

CANT THANK FORD ENOUGH ! May THEY have MORE SUCCESS IN THOSE BUILDINGS than they would have anticipated , And they ALSO MAKE THE MONEY they’ve invested back sooner than they would have hoped too ! From what I know they’ve BEEN GOOD STEWARTS FOR DETROIT First the Rencen and now here !

Michigan Central Station can also serve as a starting point for commuter rail in Detroit. The existing Amtrak line can be diverted into here, and you can establish new train services to serve the greater Detroit area (and even the rest of Michigan). Add in some bus connections at the front of the building and you've once again made MCS a transportation hub, just like it was in its heyday.

Proof that a vision, with proper funding can accomplish just about anything. I only hope the building gets as much attention after the rehab in the manner it did when it was a vacant derelict structure.

Thrilled to see this building coming back to life. Very tragic that the idea for putting trains back into MCS is apparently scrapped. Also, the reporter is incorrect, the idea for air conditioning dates well before MSC and actually the first fully air-conditioned house was in Chicago only a year after MCS was completed, in 1914.

To bad for ME I didn’t hear of any plan to bring trains back there ! I know quite some years back there was talk about building another larger train station to replace what is used now which was supposed to be a temporary location APPARENTLY THAT NEVER HAPPENED either 😒

That was a majestic building while it was in service as a railroad depot. I visited it often in the early 2000s before moving to Arizona. Ford has the resources to save and utilize this place. I look forward to seeing the progress.

I remember as a little girl, taking the train to New York, and to Chicago. I think we also traveled to Canada. But, at some point the train was at the foot of Woodward, then ferry across the Detroit River. Then, after A year or two, passengers took a bus thru the tunnel, then boarded in Windsor. Someone finally realized how dangerous it was to cross over with passengers sitting in train cars!!

Detroit has some truly incredible architecture. I've never even been there, but it deeply saddens me how much of it has been abandoned or demolished over the past century. It's good to see some preservation and restoration efforts making headway.

I'm not from the US, I'm from Catalonia but I like to see that something as iconic as Michigan Central Station, which decades ago was so important, is being renovated as it was before, even better. All cities in the world would have to do these things with buildings or places that are abandoned

The current plans don’t actually have a railway station as part of it, which is a huge waste. This would be a way better way to arrive in Detroit then the current Amtrak station.

Great report. So they found a 60,000 square foot basement and filled it with concrete? That's too bad, they should have tricked that out too! Also it's a bit sad seeing the beautiful cast iron decoration being replaced with cheap 3D printed plastic. I guess a billion dollars doesn't go that far these days 😂

First time in there I was about 6years old and remember a guy had fallen and had a bleeding head wound. Had a towel under hid head. Last time was after the boat races around 88/89ish. My buddies went way up the stairs and I stayed on the main floor looking around.

Progress is great and the park in front is going to be excellent as well. Except…why are they planting Bradford pear trees? Non-native invasive species that many communities and states are banning because they become a nuisance. Consider something different for that landscape
