Load/reload era was the worst era of the band. Death Magnetic and Hardwired is much better than load and reload, not to mention st.anger. The first album with rob revived Metallica from the load/reload era.

Cliff is a good example of bass being the foundation of a band. Once he was gone, this band went to shit. Not because they had Newsted or Trujillo who are both tremendous bass players but because Lars and Hetfeild refuse to listen to their input, actually cutting them out of the creative process almost entirely. I am willing to bet if they said "Hey Rob, I'll play off your riff" once in a while, we might actually get another Master of Puppets.
@pauldevereaux55377 жыл бұрын
Karl Chavez Lars and Hetfield have actually written almost all of Metallica's songs. Lyrics almost all hetfield. Drums and guitar and song structure Lars and Hetfield. So yeah, I know what you mean that a band should work as a band but what you say is not really true.
@karl86217 жыл бұрын
Ya that's now. When Cliff was around, he was most definitely part of the writing process. Songs like Call of Ktulu, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets and Orion, you can really hear his influence. Metallica's only bass solo on any of their albums came from Cliff. I know Hetfield and Lars wrote a lot of the songs but when Cliff left, so did any other of their bass players getting in any input at all. In Cliff's day, they would at least say sometimes "let me hear what you got on bass" but now, nothin. Outside of And Justice for All, their music became extremely bland and their bassist creative absence really shows. What's the point in creating new music with a musician as talented as Rob or Jason if you are just going to write boring and bland garbage. Because they can play the old stuff? Outside Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth, any professional can play the "old stuff" so why not hire one them if you are going to write Godsmack-esq, tasteless horseshit? What partially made Metallica great back in the day was their complex songs and a big part of that was on bass, regardless of who wrote it.
@karl86217 жыл бұрын
@ Paul Devereaux, I got the last comment you posted but it came up as spam? Now it won't let me unspam for some reason. God damn KZfaq went to crap after google bought it. Anyways, I like the Black Album too but man did they tone it down a bit on the complexity of their songs. I learned Enter Sandman and Sad but True within hours to give an example and I'll be the first to tell you that I'm nothing special on bass.
@pauldevereaux55377 жыл бұрын
Yeah, KZfaq is quite shitty these days. It is true, there is not much complexity on the Black Album. At least nothing like Master of Puppets or AJFA. Still most of the songs have an amazing sound and the album still has this raw feeling. For me they lost that feeling (rawness) after the Black Album. I cannot blame them though, as musicians you get older and you wanna try other stuff.

Cliff learned bass to remember his brother who predeceased him. What a shame on both counts. I am so glad we have his music for posterity. He was the Eddie VH of bass.
