By popular demand I would like to introduce the Cliff Burton Bass Rig. Debuting in Season 2 of Know Your Bass Player, we talk the legend lost before his time - Cliff Burton of EZ Street, Trauma and Metallica.
Cliff used a modified Rickenbacker, Alembic Spoiler and Aria basses to get his signature sounds.
Combining these basses with Road Electronics cabinets, Sunn amplifiers and a Mesa Boogie rig.

I'm a guitarist of 15 years or so off and on, so mostly over the years I looked at 6 string players. But Cliff Burton has and always will be a huge influence on my personal style of playing. The guy had music and instrument mastery really figured out. Amazing and honorable musician that deserves love and respect.

Cliff’s sister Connie said in an video interview that Cliff once bemoaned to her that no amp could do what he wanted. So Connie suggested he go to college and learn electronics and make his own. He did this for a brief period but quit due to them requiring him to take classes such as English, and physical education. Connie then suggested that he go to the school bookstore and purchase the books he needed and teach himself. Which he did. Within six months he built his amplifier. Sadly, Connie never gave a time period for this, or whether he ever gigged with it. She claimed that she believes that Jim Martin has that amp, so it stands to reason it was during his Easy Street years. Other than that little bit, stand up job documenting his gear and rig.

very good info Alfie , there is no worse feeling than stolen equipment , back in 1980 my buddies and I rented a storage room to practice in so we didn't bother anyone One day we got back from lunch to find the lock cut and everything was stolen down to the last drum , we were devastated , that equipment was all we had and we never recovered after that and I alway wonder what could have been. Two weeks later our drummer lost his arm in a rollover car accident , it was horrible. We were doomed from the beginning.
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 6 жыл бұрын
Holy shit dude, that's absolutely horrible. I'm sorry to hear that, I have no words. I hope your mate made peace with his accident and the sting of stolen equipment has diminished over the years. My heart goes out to you all.

It's unfathomable. I got popped in 2011, one hot summer's day while sweating my balls off at work. The sub-human cock-swine entered through my kitchen window; 3 basses, Markbass LMK dual channel head, large travel bag with all my cords and pedals and stuff and things, a couple hundred dollars of change I was saving, my laptop. Got the head back a few weeks later after some grubby douche tried to pawn it, but the rest is gone. I had to question my humanity for the next little while as blood-drenched fantasies coursed through my spirit like black ichor. I have no patience for thieves. None.
@markbass354

sorry to hear this , there is no worse feeling than to be violated like this. I'm glad you got something back , I can imagine getting my bass back after some thief had his grubby hands on it. There's nothing worse than a dirty low down thief. I remember taking it very personal and yes my blood was boiling I was young and full of rage but has since passed.

Cruise my man thank you for the great comment. I'm glad to answer those questions for you. I have some more Rickenbacker trivial for you in that case! The Rick stayed at his parents house after he died. Cliffs mum Jan Burton had it mounted on her wall. She died in the early 2000's (Cancer) and eventually Ray Burton put it up for auction to fund a music school/fund. I think then it was bought by the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame where it's now displayed. Not long after Metallica were also celebrating a position in the HoF too. Those modifications are nuts as well, I love it!

And thank you for the extra information. Your a bassplayers god on information !! Thanks again!!!

Thank you for the information for those of you who are interested in Cliff Burtons life, in the early years of Metallica, their rehearsal space and living quarters at the Music Building in Jamaica Queens NYC, along with other musicians filled the streets with their thrashing sounds... parents covered the ears of their children. On another occasion Cliff came across a rap concert held at the neighborhood local park where Run DMC were performing...at this time both groups hadn't released their debut album yet.

I'd love to play an Alembic, the build quality looks amazing and I want to see it for myself! After doing Jasons' rig the Alembics sound overtly heavy and that puts me off haha. MB-4? Wow interesting choice, what do you like about it?
@cyko4
@cyko4 6 жыл бұрын
(the Mb-4)Its super Comfortable, I it sounds good with low or high action( I like my action super low),and with the P/J pickups the tone options keep coming! Also I own 2 of them and they are both setup completely different one is tuned in drop C with slightly higher action(works great for death metal and black metal but I have played jazz on it)/ and the other the action is almost touching the frets ( no buzz at all) it's tuned to E standard or drop D (depending on whats being played) its great for thrash metal and funk I even play 80s pop songs on it, also I use Dean markley blue steel strings and play through a beheringer Bx4500H head and a bugera 4x12 cabnet.

About to watch it!!!! My favorite channel on KZfaq!!! Edit: Came back to respond to video, at first I thought it was short, but so was his career. I absolutely till this day think he was the best bass player metal has ever had...miss you Cliff!

Ah Paul, you're too kind, thank you for the kind words! Cliff only played with Metallica for 3 years so there wasn't huge changes unfortunately. I'd love to have seen what he would play today if he was alive.

👍 Cliff's the reason I chose bass as my instrument! Also before his black and gold signature model was released Aria had put out the SB-CB (Cliff Burton). It was basically the SB-1000 with the oval inlays from the black and gold
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I read about the SB-CB. Since the official tribute come out it's in a bit of an odd place. Especially since they combine the BnG1 and the SB100 together. Just weird.

I purchased an Aria pro Cliff Burton signature series. Even though it sounds amazing it is not as low hard bashing as my Rickenbacker 4003 with the same set up as mentioned in this video. Thank you so much for the info!!!! It may not be that burgundy that Cliff's was but it sounds exactly the same and black suits me better
