I composed this song in 2004 after learning that my best friend had been killed in Ramadi, Iraq. "Dennis J. Miller, 21, was killed Wednesday in Ramadi when a rocket propelled grenade hit his M1A1 Abrams tank, the Pentagon said."
When I was a child my momma used to say
Don't you ever let them see you run away,
I tried to obey the words she said that day
But now I'm running and I just can't get away.
My father drifted away my mother's dead and gone
My sister died of shame my brother never came home,
I've been running so long I just can't run no more
Lord I've been running since the day that I was born.
I know that thieves can steal I know that liars can lie
I guess that I'll be a fool until the day I die,
I've seen more hard times than I would care to count
I know that nobody knows you when you're down and out.
Lord I never thought that I would live this long
And I never thought that I would be this strong,
I hear the voice of an angel singing my last song
Lord I never thought that I would live this long.

hey man. I have this video saved on my phone on an old r/army subreddit. I go back a few times a month and watch it. This song means a lot to me. I just got out of service, and I did four years as an infantryman at Fort Myer, better known as Arlington National Cemetery. I personally buried a few really really good friends of mine that I had made during service. It was as simple as his unit was deployable, mine wasn’t. I beat the hell out of myself every time I think of it. I felt guilty, that I’d give anything to switch places. This wonderful piece you composed gives me a sense of peace, as if myself, and all of my now deceased battle buddies are sitting around a campfire and bullshitting like the good days. I miss those men. I know we’re strangers to one another, but thank you for this song. It really makes me feel better.

This is what is properly known as Old Time Country Music. Many the melodies, and at times the lyrics, came straight from Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales and one doesn’t have to listen to the folk music from those parts for very long before you have to say; “Dang, that sounds familiar!” Subscribed because..damn, you’re good.

Absolutely beautiful composition both lyrically and melodically. The bluesy riff is simple, catchy, and creates a dramatic tension that perfectly accompanies and enhances the haunting lyrics. Your videos inspired me to purchase my first banjo and I hope to start learning two-finger Old Time style ASAP. I look forward to every video. Thanks, Clifton!

First time i heard this song was the day before my best friend died. Literally a ufc fighter. He never learned to run away and it killed him. Such things happen. "Wherever you may be, Suppose little Mary Phagan Belonged to you or me. Now little Mary's mother She weeps and mourns all day, Praying to meet little Mary In a better world some day. Now little Mary's in Heaven, Leo Frank's in jail, Waiting for the day to come When he can tell his tale. Frank will be astonished When the angels come to say, "You killed little Mary Phagan; It was on one holiday." Judge he passed the sentence, Then he reared back; If he hang Leo Frank, It won't bring little Mary back. Frank he's got little children, And they will want for bread; Look up at their papa's picture, Say, "Now my papa's dead." Judge he passed the sentence He reared back in his chair; He will hang Leo Frank, And give the negro a year. Next time he passed the sentence, You bet, he passed it well; Well, Solister H. M. Sent Leo Frank to hell.
