"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I'm not a climate scientist, but as a 57 y/o who grew up in W. PA, it is getting crazy hot so early and no way is it close to normal. What is noticed most is leaf out in the spring which is about a month earlier than when I was a kid, and the low snow totals. Normal is about 84" a season; I bet it's not been that for 4 total seasons. Also, Lake Erie is so warm it has not even had harbors freeze over in a long time, and the ecosystem is changing. Once it hits critical, there is no going back.

As a 57 year old who grew up in eastern PA (Philly burbs), I hear you. I bought a new snow blower 3 years ago and for the first 2 years didn’t even need to use it once! This past winter we had two modest snows where I ended up using it to clear our quite long driveway, but probably needn’t have bothered if I could just have waited about 2-3 days, by which time most snow had melted anyway. As a kid 40+ years ago I remember building snow forts at the end of the driveway with my brother. Wouldn’t be enough sticking to do that now! 😢

But when the world got together and signed the treaty to ban CFCs, I thought that finally the world was going to unite over the outstanding environment issues at last. I had one son, and then despaired as nothing else was done for the environment. He grew up to not have children - thank goodness. He doesn't heed much of what I say, but he did listen to that. It does frighten me, what his future will be like, but at least he has had 28 years of being well looked after, an enjoyable childhood out here in the countryside, home-schooled, still living at home, and doing a job i the subject he likes. He knows the world is on borrowed time and, frankly, he isn't saving for a rainy day, future mortgage, or anything like that. ...I really wonder at these couples having children now though. For a few years I hardly saw anyone about with babies. But suddenly there's a rash of them - and I can't help looking at the children with great pity, and at their parents with contempt.

We already know about the food supply. Ten or so years ago my university said there will be at least a 30% reduction in farmland by 2040 (takes 500 years for 1 inch of soil to form for farming). Already, produce/soil contains less nutrients. Produce is no longer ripe on the vine, it ripens in transit which basically deplete the nutrients even more into just sugar. Farmers Markets are not always local but I always try to buy produce with the stickers that have the nearest location to me. Not always possible, like bananas all come from the same place and you'd need 12 of those to get all your potassium for the day. There are better sources for that (not vitamins). Or frozen since that is more nutrient dense even though the taste will never be as good as fresh. Hard to get 5-8 servings of vegetables these days and I am comfortable enough to not look at prices at the grocery store (for now, I don't miss calculating everything through the store to save for my now deceased type 1 diabetic SO insulin that got me into your show back when you first began yt).

There are multiple threats for farming. 1) Heatwaves. Over 32C and plants stop breathing. Alveols shut down and sugarproduction ends. And at higher temps plants just die (ie. rice near 47-49C, that has been toppled in some places, ie. India is expected to stop its rice exports this year.). 2) Droughts. Prolonged droughts are seen in multiple places. They have grown from week long periods to multiple month long periods. Some areas like parts of Spain or Colorado river basin has such droughts that lasts years or even decades. 3) Waterscarsity. 1C temperature rise mean 7% more humidity in the air. And this is taken from plants and soil. Droughts makes it worse. We have many places that have already pumped out most of the groundwater in the region. 4) Vanishing mountain glaciers. We are rapidly losing mountain glaciers that provide fresh water during summertime and often that is used to battle droughts. Losing these glacial waters means there will be no water for current type agriculture. We can see these impacts already in Europe (Alpine glaciers gone by 2050-2070), Colorado river area (already in drought and many farms has ended their production or reduced farming areas drastically), India/Pakistan (flashfloods, Kashmir area might lead to war over water), ... 5) War threats over water that is mostly used in farming. Nile river damn mean less water to Egypt. India/Pakistan region specially Kashmir is under regional war. Syrian war was after severe droughts. On Gaza strip the waterrights are one underlying reason. In Ukraine Russia destroys damns to limit water availability for agriculture. ... 6) Soil erosion. We have lost nearly half of the soils over the farmlands. 7) Floods. 8) Raising sea level. 9) Losing coral reefs. (1-2 billion people more to get their food from global markets instead of local resources.) ... List goes on and on. Our food security is under constant threats that are only worsening.

Your point about climate change ruining growing/herding seasons is already happening. In France, the temperature during winter has to get low enough to inhibit the growth of a fungus through the summer growing season. Recently, it hasn't been cold enough in winter, and this fungus is out of control and causing crop failures. Then, in Texas, where I live, the droughts caused by climate change are leading to a lack of grass growth, so the cows aren't getting enough to eat, and the ranchers have to slaughter them early because they can't afford to feed them. For a time, this meant low beef prices, but at some point the cows that were supposed to be slaughtered for a certain season just aren't there and beef prices rise. And it takes 2 years to raise a cow, so it's not something that can be easily fixed. Another thing is water. The droughts here are really bad. There's a city near me that is expecting to run out of water this summer. Before Hurricane Beryl hit Texas, they hoped the rainfall would refill the reservoir, but Beryl went too far east, and the area got no rain.

Electricity is generated, transported, and used in real time. As a distribution designer I size the transformer that serves your house based on the average winter/summer KWH usage that comes from your billing history. When new houses are added or people add stuff like AC or a heating pump, more electricity needs to be generated in order to meet demand. That’s not really the issue since we factor that in but it sure doesn’t help. The real issue is the people that feel they need their house at 65 degrees when it’s 100 degrees outside. They’re the same type of people that horde toilet paper during Covid and it screws it up for the rest of us following directions. People like to say stupid shit like “our grid is shitty” when they have no idea what it takes to keep your lights on 24/7.

We can grow corn here in the Midwest at +4C with the caveat that we keep our current aerosol masking effect from coal burning power plants. The sulfates are suppressing our summer afternoon temps. It’s why we’re setting a stunningly low number of summer records in the Midwest. Columbus OH 1931-1955: 31 100F days. Columbus 1956-1980:ZERO 100F days. Coal plants started going up in early 1950’s. At +4c the average hi low might be 94/74 but hottest days will still only be around 100F, 105F tops. Take away the coal and Columbus could hit 110F even at +1.5C. Portland hit 116F in 2021.

Kyle, Thank you for raising awareness on the climate crisis. Here is a data point from the IPCC 6th Synthesis Report, Summary for Policymakers: “In order to give us a 50% chance to avoid catastrophic, irreversible climate related impacts we must reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030.” So serious is the global unanimous consensus amongst 195 member nations that our dysfunctional Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which with the passage of the Infrastructure Law, provides the uncapped public matching funds to finance the transition to reduce U.S. economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 (certified by the Department of Energy; see Executive Summary of the Inflation Reduction Act for details). Pssssst, annual greenhouse gas emissions are still growing. WTF!
