Right? I have been on 2 depts. I am Hoping to get on where I am At now. That said, I’m willing to bet if the states made it easier, more would join. And not to mention.. when I was a volunteer.. I asked others why they didn’t want too. Others felt it took to much time to get certified. Others wanted to join, but didn’t have the time to get all the certs. And one comment that was made to me, and that I agree with 100%.. “if I joined as a volunteer fireman.. why the heck do I need to be an EMR/EMT? That’s not why I signed up. I want to help fight fires, not play ambulance driver.” If depts want more volunteers.. make them not require EMS certification. Stick with FF1 and go from there..

In a sparsely populated rural area or small town, there may be only one call a day. Paying a full time crew to be on duty 24 hours a day and only spend one or two of those hours actually doing what they are paid to do isn't financially feasible. You could have paid crews cover a bigger area like a whole county to pool resources and try to get your money's worth, but then patients wait longer for help to arrive because the crew might be coming from 20 miles away.

That's the problem with having a volunteer department. People have jobs, lives, etc. If people don't step up and volunteer, and the money isn't there to hire paid people, then you go without. Want better service? Write bigger checks.

True I was a Volunteer Fire Chief for 15 years and a firefighter for almost 40 years young people are to busy these days to take the training to be ems volunteering is a thing of the past sad to say.

One of the biggest problems is the time and cost to train for EMT cert. Its 600.00 the class time has almost trippled from when I got mine in the mid 1990s. And after all that its tough to swallow doing it for free. Especially when ALS shows up and bills 3k for services. And the problem also if you train 2 or 3 people these same people will be the only ones to make these calls. Hence "burn out" and you're in the same boat you began with

FF 1 and 2 aren't required at all in many states. Volunteer agencies have to do the best they can with what they have. Some of these rural depts are operating on budgets of 10 and 12k a year.

My state there are no minimum requirements. They would LIKE to see you have FF2 to use an SCBA but, if the chief says youre good enough, then youre good enough.

@@jimziemer474 In Penna. it goes by hours of training. They have like 4 levels of training. You really dont need a fire card in PA to be able to do anything. If the chief of the department says you can wear a pack, then so be it.
