Climbing Konahuanui tallest peak in the Ko'olau Mountains | Hawaii 100 Highest Peaks
Konahuanui is the tallest peak in the Ko'olau Mountains Hawaii. Konahuanui is the name of the mountain which actually has 2 different peaks: K1 the tallest at 3150ft and K2 which is 3050ft high.
Due to prominence only K1 makes it into the list of Hawaii 100 Highest Peaks at place #60.
In the Southern Ko'olau Mountains Konahuanui is one of my favorite peaks to hike. It can be challenging, a good workout, and the views are amazing. There are at least 4 different ways you can get to the top of K1.
1st and easiest starts at Kalawahine Trail on Tantalus, and gently approaches the steep slopes of Konahuanui. This is the way I hike it in the video.
2nd T option would be to approach through a steep Windward ridge called Piliwale, which is for more advanced hikers.
3rd option is to climb up Nu'uanu saddle from the Pali Lookout while fighting your way up through rock faces, overgrowth, and crumbly rocks. (expert hikers only).
4th option would be through the Ko'olau Summit Trail, coming from South (advanced hikers only)
It is a challenging hike, no matter what.

I think difficulty increases depending on how wet and windy. I ran to K1 from Waikiki on a nice day and didn't find it too bad.

I agree Todd! But you are a strong runner, so difficulty for you is much different than for a weekend warrior or regular hiker. More experienced you get on these Hawaii trails, better you get at them :D

As a kid, I hiked all through those mountains. I lived in Makiki, so the Tantalus Trail started right above my house. As a young teen, there were no difficult climbs on Oahu. We had just come from Colorado, so the Ko'olaus were a pleasant tropical forest hike.

You were lucky to grow up here around this beautiful mountains. The Ko’olaus are really magical! Colorado has very good trails, but they are very “evolved” compared to the trails here, so I feel like they are easier to traverse. You just need to get used to with high elevation over there, and you can cruise.

Great video! This is one I’m gearing up to do sometime this month. Definitely to K2, and hopefully to K1 if I feel comfortable enough with the exposure. Current hardest I’ve done is Mt Olympus from Wa’ahila Ridge. It’s by far my favorite hike I’ve done, but I won’t lie, I had butterflies in my stomach while traversing saddle that leads to the official summit.

Mahalo! You will like Konahuanui to K2 for sure. The traverse to K1 is a bit longer with more exposure, but not too bad. If you done Mt Olympus you kinda know what to expect here, but a longer KST traverse.

Hey brother I hiked K2 for the first time last Sunday 5/17 I was passed by Ivan on my way up he was wearing the same clothes was that the same day you were there lol! Also I saw a group of people drop in to the upper Manoa falls side they were canyoneering down the slot! That was pretty cool! I need to go back and make it across to K1 hopefully this rain stops and it’s dry this weekend!

The next one towards Makapuu is a high peak but has no name. The next to that is the Wailupe Ridge terminus.

Great content. Do you recommend this trail to a beginner with regular shoes that is not scared to try new things? Pali notches looks scary but not this.

Thank You! I consider this an intermediate hike if you go only to K2 the first peak. If you traverse on the Koolau Summit Trail to the 2nd peak K1 is a more advanced one. Beginner can be ok on the trail if wear the right shoes. I do not recommend “no traction” road runners. It can make your hike not as enjoyable, and more tiring. I hope this helps!

Actually this trail offers a cool campsot on one of the peaks, but this is done as a dayhike most of the time.

Hey Mike, Yes, you can go up Wa’ahole and after the rope section instead of continuing on the KST toward Olympus you have to take the trail to the left. That trail is more overgrown, and it looks more like a faint trail first. It is a longer traverse.

This is harder than Wiliwilinui and longer too. It has couple different climbs, but if you felt okay on Wili you should be fine.💪

@@HungaroExplorer i was planning to park where it says the trail begins and climb back to my car, but I've also seen people climb the mountain then descend on the other side going to the pali lookout part where there are the steps? what do you recommend?

@@benclarke9410 The easiest way if you start up at Kalawahine trail from Tantalus. The ither option the Pali side starts at Nuuanu Trail which is steeper. I like both ways.

@@HungaroExplorer is it possible to start at kalawhine trail, to go both summits. Continue onto the pali lookout side down the notches and back up to the kalawhine trail ?

It is possible but it is pretty dangerous if you never been in that section. It is steep, crumbly and has a hard obstacle to climb down called the Chimney. I have another video called “Konahuanui the Hard way” and you can see the down climb in there how it looks like. I wouldn’t suggest it to hike that route just with someone who did it before or with a guide.
