This episode was filmed 10th & 11th September 2022.
We have arrived at the summit of Mount Fløyen by the funicular railway and are stunned by the amazing views. The weather is also glorious so we enjoy a relaxing coffee in the sun.
We take a walk around the lake and are greeted by a lovely surprise back at the train station where there is a choir singing against the spectacular backdrop view.
Back down in the city we explore the Bryggen and Carol does some shopping before having a tasty lunch in the China Palace restaurant.
The next morning is Sunday and we discover that the laundrette is shut and only a small section of the supermarket is open!
We find a busy rest area to stop for lunch before continuing our journey, pausing at Samnanger Church to fly the drone and then discover the beautiful waterfall, Fossen Bratte.

I am an American living in Norway. I love your videos! Thank you for making them. As an American coming from a big city I love the fact that Norway more or less closes down on Sundays. It quiets down life a bit. Forces you to take it easy on Sundays. Love it!

In case you are interested, the song the choir was singing at the top of Fløyen is Bergen's (un)official national anthem -Nystemte - Even the King stands for this when he is visiting Bergen.

Living in Norway, I like that most things are closed in Norway on Sundays. Because it's good to have a day when most people are off work. But, I completely understand that it can be surprising/annoying if you don't know about that before comming here.

I found myself not wanting this to end. Unusual to have things closed on a Sunday, although when I was in school in the 70’s most places here were closed on sundays. Carol, I liked your hat choice! So cute. Great video. Mary

Yes, there are laws which regulate that most stores must stay closed. Most people prefer it this way, as you have a day to spend with family, go out hiking etc. This is what most people do on Sundays, very few attend church services.

@@LifeistooshortCK By simply planning. That said, this is a decent compromise solution. These small stores keeps the number of staff low and discourages Sunday shopping while still giving people a emergency solution if they need it, so we won't starve if we planned poorly.

Starving for one day isn't a problem. Actually it might be good. But some with high sugar intake might get a headache I guess (like me - lol)
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
@@northof-62 Starving for *one* day is bad. You need more time for the body to switch to a healthier mode of running, burning fat instead of sugar. But yes, starvation treatment has been researched by the Russians with very positive results. It's bad if you have any kind of infections. But it helps with autoimmune diseases, several skin conditions, several mental health problems, even cancer. It's recommend to use injections (not food) of vitamins to reduce the harmful effects of starvation. And constant medical supervision, as there's definitely dangers involved. And you don't want to risk the body starting the digestion of the heart or the brain etc...

Aw, you brought it all back to me, half a century on. In my teens I was a member of the Orpington Junior Singers, an internationally renowned girls’ choir. We used to tour Scandinavia in the summer; we exchanged with choirs in Sandefjord, Bergen and Tapiola, Finland, during my time. My sister and I returned to Norway to stay with the families just for a holiday, so we visited Bergen twice. Our coach took us up to that viewing area, where the coach driver told us that there was normally a spectacular view., “but sadly, not today!” All we could see was a sea of fog! And the goat brought back a different kind of memory, as our coach ran over one, near a hairpin bend, reducing several choir girls to tears. Seems the goats still haven’t learnt not to sprawl all over the road. Anyway, thank you for letting me see that view, even after waiting fifty years! I absolutely adored Norway and I am enjoying reliving the feel of the place, through your videos.

Happy New Year from Australia. Great work again, lovely Bergen which I last visited in 2018 on a very hot day, whilst on a cruise. Had a nice cold icecream at the top of the funicular, brings back memories. Got a glimpse of the McDonalds there, which I think claimed to be the oldest building containing a McDonalds in the world. Their reviews are a bit patchy, so think your choices of food were good ones. The old wooden buildings in Bryggen area are marvellous survivors, how they survived fire over the centuries is amazing, especially since they're all joined together. It's always been a busy port area, since the Hanseatic league brought so much trade to and from the Germanic countries. Yes the new light rail is very efficient and effective, it links the city with its airport. Good to see the electric vehicles which Norway seems to be a world leader in takeup, maybe the next liittle red van will be an electric model.

There are 3 waterfalls you can go behind as I have visited here in Norway, and one is the waterfall you went behind, -Steinsdalsfossen. And in Geiranger there is Storsterfossen, and in Randabydda there is Tvinnefossen. Love your videos! I can for sure say that here in Norway we have the moust safe food in the world. However when foreigners comes here they do not understand how to put together a meal. Well Austrians do as they have almoust the same menues as we. The morning, and two afternoon meals, we have sliced bread with butter and jam, or fish in tomatosauce, or cheese, well like that, and drinking milk, coffee or tea to the meals. Donutts and small cakes we have with coffee or tea after dinner, or small meals between the main meals. You can name donutts as coffeeccakes. Maby yong people here do different, I do not know.

Learning Swedish has come in handy reading all the signs when I visit Norway (since they're similar enough)... I giggled at the train names "Blue Man" and "Little Red Riding Hood" (which I thought said Redhead at first). I'm loving getting to see more of Norway through your travels... I've only ever been to Oslo several times and have been eyeing Bergen and/or Tromsø on my next visit. I will definitely take the funicular up there!

Short answer yes :) except petrol stations and one of the most comedic bureaucratic moves in Norwegian history the "Brustad Bua" or "brustad shops" basically large stores can designate a max 100 square meters area for Sunday open, 50 less than a petrol station. Our politicans do not need to join the EU to come up with ridiculous regulations :)

@@LifeistooshortCK It actually makes a lot of sense. Small stores don't need as big of a staff. So more people can stay at home and have a weekend off. And the small stores discourages shopping on Sundays so people are more likely to finish that up earlier keeping Sundays free of activity. So less cars driving on the streets etc.
@svenhaheim
@svenhaheim Жыл бұрын
@@Luredreier it makes absolutely no sense at all the stores still have several people present, having the full store open would make very little difference. It would make more sense to just have a full ban on stores open on a sunday.
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
@@svenhaheim That would be the ideal, of course. But this is the best compromise they could come up with. And honestly, it kind of works. There's fewer stores open due to the limitations, so even if there may be *some* stores on Sundays with the same workforce as regular stores the total number of grocery store employees working is still reduced. These stores are smaller, discouraging shopping on that day. And while you may have experienced similar number of staffs my experience is that it's *usually* slightly less. 1-2 employees vs 3-5 in regular stores.
@svenhaheim
@svenhaheim Жыл бұрын
@@Luredreier people generally shop less on Sundays because of a well established culture of Sundays off, not because of limited store sizes the Brustad shops here are packed with people like sardines more often than not, all it does is add discomfort your thinking is typical of norwegian social engineering thinking. Our «betters» trying to nudge us to their will. People also end up wasting tons of extra money shopping at petrol stations where everything is doubled at least in price. Its a ludicrous policy that belongs in places like the former soviet union not modern western Europe.

I imagine the Sunday thing is like here in the UK where if you shop is over a certain square foot then you are not allowed to open for more than 6 hours on a Sunday. Hence why our supermarkets are open 10-4 but the small local shops can open all day. The difference in Norway being that once it is over a certain size you must close on a Sunday. Hence why that supermarket only had a little section open on the Sunday. Just a guess.
