“Climeworks: Removing CO₂ from the air” introduces Climeworks' journey to one of the most advanced carbon removal companies today.
Co-CEOs Jan Wurzbacher and Christoph Gebald explain their vision to bring Climeworks’ high-quality carbon removal solution via direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) to gigaton scale.
The film was produced for us by BBC StoryWorks, the branded content studio of BBC Studios as part of a documentary style series, Humanizing Energy, showcasing innovations from organizations across the energy ecosystem.
It is featured in the section “Reducing day to day carbon: how do we decarbonize our transport, cities and atmosphere?”, which showcases different solutions in the emissions reductions and carbon removal fields.

I sell carbon credits if you are interested. You can help now instead of investing in something like climeworks which will never work on a large scale

Your approach is very interesting. Well, from what I understand, you are removing CO2 from the atmosphere and injecting it into the soil. They studied another, more social approach. Using the extracted CO2 to produce polymers that can be transformed into Lego-style bricks or material that can be used in a 3D printer that produces houses. We would have the production of a polymer and the release of O2. The inefficiency of the reaction in relation to the use of fossil fuels to produce the polymers could be compensated with the sale of carbon credits, and the sale of the material to build houses and improve the lives of people that fits with the UN's 2030 goals in several ways.

Climeworks is doing great work and really appreciate to all of you who thought about this project. Really incredible. But I have simple one query, what sorbents are you using for this CO2 adsorption. Are they porous material or something else and what is the stability of these sorbents. How long they can use repeatedly. Thanks

I absolutely love this solution but I'm wondering about energy requirements. How are you going to get the energy to support the extraction of gigatons of CO2 out of the atmosphere by 2050? Is that one of the reasons why Project Orca is based in Iceland, to take advantage of the geothermal energy there?

Great effort and passion! Does the plant clean the air apart from removing Co2?

I wonder what is the scientic limit or the limit of scalling what can be the minimum kWh needed to store 1T of CO2? Currently the price is very high. Right now the price is very high with 1300 EUR per Tonne. That a cost of roughly 13 000 EUR per Person in Western Europe per year. So like 1/3 or GDP so not realistic. What would be the best case scenario price?

Climeworks extracts CO2 out of the atmosphere. Then Carbfix in Iceland pumps the CO2 underground where it reacts with the basalt rock to form minerals. The process takes 2 years but means the CO2 is "out of the equation", ie the CO2 no longer causes global warming.

I am playing a devils advocate here. Do we know how much CO2 is required for all vegetation(plants/trees etc.,) on the earth? if we suck certain level of CO2 from air, isn't it going to imbalance the nature, then vegetation suffers I feel. I like to discuss it further more. Please chip in your ideas.

The more the better...the most biologically active and biodiverse moments in Earth's history happened when CO2 was at 5000-8000ppm. We're far far away from that. This project is literally the worst idea around today. Half of the gains in agricultural output since the 1800s comes from CO2 increases, the other mechanization....

Our company wants to make money, not saving the planet.. We could be good business partners! Where can I buy Mammoth units to remove CO2 in Patagonia? Our hedge-fund is looking to steal the CO2 plats need in this area as a second chapter in our geo-engineering megalithic project which is hoping to result in lock-step shocking events for the terrain and local community.. (Moving forward on most SDG goals) By the end of the decade with the help of your technology, desertification should be achieved! We are confident on your spinning blades and it's amazing rotary technology! haha
