If your baby has started crying as soon as you leave the room or drop them off with family or at daycare/childcare then you need to watch this video! You'll learn the common cause of this clingy behaviour (aka separation anxiety), and what you can do to help.
There are things you can do to help minimise it before it sets in, as well as ways to manage separation anxiety and make it less stressful for you and your little one when they get upset. In this video I cover how to help your little one become comfortable with you leaving their line of sight at home, as well as, exactly what to do when you leave your little one with relatives or at daycare/childcare. Once you start using these strategies your baby will be less stressed when you leave and hopefully there will be less tears!

No I think it's so precious but sad how much my munchkins attached to me. Although I'll admit, I feel weird leaving her w/ her great GPA. Or the ex in laws. I kind of feel like ish for not doing this lovey dovey thing w/ them. But they're such a huge reason as to why her dad's crap. Don't tell me u love me when all those xs u acted toxic & expected me to pick up all the pieces, while trying to continue trampling on me. Sigh, it's a process... & I just really don't trust anyone. Plus, his voice is so loud & carries. I just question everybody. My baby for real cries when I leave her though. Tears rolling down that little face of hers & all. I just smile at how cute she is while my heart breaks & I just hafta go on about my days. But she's so happy when she sees me. That smile stays on for a good bit too. Little chunky face w/ dimples & teef teefs 🥰

My son is 3 and it started after going to the nursery. One big mistake i made (and nursery staff encouraged me to do it, unfortunately) was that when my son was playing, i sneaked out without saying bye. This made him extremely anxious, he now started following me into every room and bathroom, which he didn't do before.

I never liked that daycare tells parents to do this! It made my son unbearably clingy when he was little, so I never did it with my daughter when she started and she was so different

You have the best parenting tips and tricks on youtube! You literally think of everything! This video, like your other videos, hit home - especially this one! I was so boggled by my baby’s extreme clinginess all of a sudden (when she was generally super happy around the other care givers) - any time I would leave the room. This was around the time she mastered the object permanence ball in hole skill. This has lasted close to 3 weeks- she seems to be getting better. Thank you for all of this great info and a sense of validation!!!

I think my baby know that when the alarm goes off in the kitchen, that I’m going to leave the room for a brief time. Whenever the alarm goes of he drops whatever he’s doing, cries a little bit and runs(speed crawl) to me and holds on to me so tight! I’ve been bringing him with me and it seems to calm him a little bit.

Thank you for the video. Now I understand why my almost 10 month old sob started being so clingy and cries everytime i leave for a few minutes. It actually started as soon i started sleep training, and he now wont let me eveb put him down, i have to be holding him most of the time. Do you think its related to sleep training and would you still think its a phase or is there something i can do. PS sleep training was a gentle one day thing not a long traumatic experience and he goes to sleep happily without fussing so i dont think he’s traumatized.

My son is 8 months old. About two weeks ago, we tried to go over to my MIL's house for dinner. He's never been there before (she lives in a different town), and he's only seen her and my hubby's stepdad a few times. She of course wanted to hold him soon after we got there, and that resulted in him crying inconsolably for nearly 15 minutes. This gave me a major anxiety attack, I just wanted to take him and leave. He was probably tired (he'd only had about a 20 minute nap, in the car), and the only thing that really got him to calm down was a bottle (I believe it was a little early for food at that point but it did calm him down). After that, he was fine to just stay with me and play on his mat that we'd brought. However, she tried to hold him again, and he again started crying. How do we combat this? He cried that time for about 5 minutes, until my hubby started playing with him by whooshing him into the air. Needless to say, I'm extremely anxious now about going back over there, and we have plans to go there for Thanksgiving :/

Hi Emma, I love your videos! I think it would be interesting to see a video about the baby feelings. For example when you have a baby that cries when left playing next to you but not with you. When they want to sit but you need to change a diaper and the baby gets fussy. When you see the frustration in the baby of not being able to do something. When a baby fights sleep. And other moments that make the baby upset and how to deal with them :)

Simple, take the kid with you and let him participate/assist in what you are doing right now. Let him help you like asking him for giving you a tissue or a diaper. My girls love to help me where ever they can. If your kid is older and is able to communicate. Give him a false sense of a choice. Which both will benefit yourself. I give you a example, if your child doesn't want to go to bed, give him two options, either he goes to bed alone, or he can choose to go to bed with you cuddling him. Sometimes when my girls are fuzzy to put on a shirt or pants, I ask if she wants to do it by herself, or if she can put it on by herself. And it works, every time. Talking and explaining is the key. If your child doesn't responds the first couple times, be patient. It will come sooner or later. And if nothing works, take your kid with you and let it be with you. Some kids need the close contact with their parents. The world is big and scary. All it wants is the sense of security and being loved. And this should not be punished under any circumstances. Hope my single dad knowledge can help you.

How do you know if it's not just separation anxiety? My son is almost 12 months but has been like this since about 8 months. I am a single mum so he spends all day with just me. He's only spent an hour away from me in 6 months. He starts daycare next week and I'm so worried he won't cope. We have been doing visits to try and help and he'll start with half days. When we're at home though he cries every time I leave his sight and crawls after me. Sometimes he'll cry when I move away from him even if he can still see me. He also started not wanting to sleep in his cot at the same time and wanting to sleep in my bed.

Hi! I love your videos! Is it still separation anxiety when my 5-month old baby keeps on looking at me while interacting with other adults?
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Nikita some babies do display separation anxiety as early as 4 to 5 months of age, but it tends to be strongest/peak at around 9 months of age. I would say your little one is seeking your reassurance when she is interacting with other adults and making sure you are still present.

Thankyou for the video.. my son is 13 months old and is attached to me so much that he doesn’t even go to his dad. So do we pick them up every time when they cry? Is that something wrong ? I keep hearing that a lot .. if you keep picking them up they get used to it ! I don’t know I just can’t stop myself from picking up when he is crying

My daughter has just started doing this a lot at childcare drop off. She isn't clingy at other times. Feel she is tired and not getting enough sleep at childcare. Almost thinking of changing childcare. She really doesn't seem to enjoy it. She's a bit older at 16 months or so.

HELP!! I have a 10mo who's been here since birth.. The family is awesome but I've asked them not to stay so long at drop off.. 1st time parents and I've talked to them about it. The only time that he's not screaming is during nap, and feedings. His parents STILL rock him to sleep. He's built like a 2yo and just learned how to sit up and crawl. I'm at my wits end and as many of me speaking 2 them, nothing changes..

I think Covid has made separation anxiety start early. My boy is 6 months and has been like this for a while. 'Stranger Danger ' is also another challenge
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Alice D thanks for the comment. I do hink Covid has had an impact on our babies. Particularly ‘stranger danger’ as they have limited interaction with other people. Also when we as parents are anxious about going out and seeing people - which people are during these times- babies pick up on these feelings and also display them/ appear more unsettled. Hopefully the tips in this video help you get through this challenging phase 😀

Hi Emma thank you so much for the tip and it is really helpful. My son is 8 months old and we are just 2 of us at home. He used to play alone before, while I was watching him from far. But now he needs me more and he will play by himself for a while then he started to look for me and cry. How can I do about this? Thank you
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
You could try giving him a box or bowl of toys to go through while in sitting as this will keep him entertained for a bit longer but sounds like he might be starting to enter separation anxiety and wants to be with/near you. Just reassure him when you leave to go into another room you will come back. Plus the other tips in this video. Hope that helps!!!

Is there any problem if we introduce solid foods after 5 months to baby??
@EmmaHubbard

In Australia the recommendation is generally to introduce solids at 6 months of age when they have more sitting balance and better skills. But some paediatricians do recommend starting earlier.

8 months daycare? What is wrong with all of you. Almost every second person here says the same. This is insanity. Why did you choose in the first place to have a child when you don't want to spend time with it? It's your responsibility to raise a child not of a daycare worker. For my part, I'm just a divorced father and rasing my girls alone. I would never bring over my soul to leave my children at a daycare at such a young age. This is so wrong on many levels. I dropped my job to be there for my girls 24/7. What my ex wife is not ready to sacrifice.

@trolo jolo Not everyone is able to leave their job. We have bills to pay....they don't pay themselves!!! You have no idea nor is it your business, why parents choose to put their little ones into care. Stop being so harsh. Your comments are so unkind. I hope your girls don't see them.

Our precious daughter is seven months and since she was born she always wanted to be with one of us. The first couple of weeks are the hardest. Remember this: you are his home, his safe spot. It’s naturel that he wants to be with you. He just arrived here and is still so little. Enjoy it while you can and make sure he feels loved by you momma ♥️
