I love how the first thing you point out is how incredible throwing food on the floor is for their healthy development. So when this starts to happen I should celebrate instead of being annoyed 😅

My 12 month old tosses food off his tray and gives the sassiest look like "what are you gonna do about it?" Lol. We try not to react though, we just say "all done?" while doing the hand sign for all done and then clean him up. I think he just really enjoys hearing stuff splat on the table :P

For my kids-their meal was over when food was thrown. It only took 2 times before they understood. Not a word needed to be spoken, when the food & child were removed from the dining area. Or the first time they bit my nipple while nursing.

My baby doesn't throw food (yet 🙈). She's 6,5 months and I've been giving her finger food for a few weeks now. I'll make sure to follow these tips 😊 I did notice that she would eat more and easier if I give her only one or two pieces at the time. This way she stays concentrated on this one piece and put more effort in grabing it. Otherwise she would grab all over the plate and get nothing 🤷‍♀️ I'm a first time mom and I've learned so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing ❤🙏

It also helps to keep pets away when your baby's eating. My son will throw food if the dogs are in the room because he loves giving them treats.

I stop using a suction plate or utensils for my daughter so she won’t throw it. And I just place the food on the high chair tray. Sick of picking up food from the floor really. It’s hard not to react when that happens but I will try to remember your tips.

My son isn't throwing the food so much anymore but i have noticed that he becomes a bit more fussy eating & is perhaps overwhelmed, when he sees all kinds of food on his plate. So I've been feeding him dinner & i removed the plate from his line of sight & i just feed him a piece at a time. He's definitely eating dinner better this way. It's usually only dinner when we have a more difficult time getting him to eat. I also considered that maybe I'm feeding him dinner too late in the evening, when he's already at a point where he's getting tired & is thinking more about winding down & sleep than eating. So i try to do dinner earlier now.

My beautiful baby boy also realized that if he throws it on the ground the dog will come running to him, so they now have a delightful game to torment me! Also, he doesn't like to try new foods, even though he likes almost everything, how to I avoid force-feeding him to get him to try something? My husband will shove it in his mouth despite his crying and fussing, and then he decides he likes it and continues eating like nothing happened. I feel like a monster doing that, but then he won't try something he doesn't recognize. Any thoughts? As always, your channel is amazing!

@@epboe7100 hey, try this! My husband figured it out lol. Take a people toy your child likes and pretend to feed the toy. Say something like "ohh look, the coybow is eating, yum yum! One scoop for cowboy, one scoop for you!" Just something to try. It seems to work for us for a while. Also, maybe get your baby to give you a scoop in your mouth. Really enjoy that scoop of food! Hope that works

My baby has been throwing food from 7 months. She does it when she's had enough or doesn't want to eat something. Its not just food she also picks up toys and throws them in frustration when she is trying to show her frustration that she us hungry, bored or tired. I will try your tips

Informative video. We are trying the well done and clapping for our daughter if she puts food on the corner of high chair tray instead of the floor and she seems to like it. I am glad to see you have mentioned it too which is reassuring. I have read about giving more throwing activities outside of eating as throwing could be their schema - what’s your thoughts on this please?

Looking forward trying this out with my son tomorrow. He's 19 months old and most of the time he manages to eat by himself ( soups def excluded :D ), but i'm sitting on the table next to him (lunch and dinner i'd be joining him with my own plate, but i'm skipping all the snacks and just wait until he finishes his food and we get off the table) and one of a sudden he's giving me a cheeky look and starts trowing his food and most of the times he even flips his plate. Now, after knowing a bit more about that thanks to you, Emma, i've come to a conclusion that flipping the plate is actually me allowing this to happen, because usually it happens after he trows some food on the floor and i get down to pick it up. Now i know i'll just leave it there until he finishes eating. Thanks for the advices. All are very helpful & let's hope that food trowing will stop soon.

What would be the first signs that they are full when they are feeding themselves? My daughter is 13 months old. Usually, the first cue I am able to pick up on that she is finished is the actual food throwing.

This really helped if you could a video on how to teach your baby how to eat themselves as I’m not 100% sure I do every so often give him to spoon to put his own mouth or I’ll put the bowl down to try get him to take a spoon himself but he mostly just puts his hand in the porridge etc he can eat crisps, biscuits ect himself

Thank you so much for this knowledge. I came here researching because I'm feeling like that irrtated mom. My nine month old constantly throws the food on the ground then looks over as it falls. I kept on telling her "no no no, food in mouth or here" as I pointed to here tray...like that was an enabler, because everytime I take it up, she throws another piece down. Definitely will do the reinforcement re the food in mouth or on table. Also will help to guide, though it would be easy just to ignore....that I believe will hurt if it becomes a habit (so ignoring won't be qn option for me). Glad I came here, because I really needed the improvement in my approach. Thanks a lot

Quick question our baby is 10 months and she is currently doing this new thing where she is not wanting to sit in any seats like the high chair, pram or car seat any ideas on how we can get her back to enjoying going straight into these seats again?

Maybe she gets bored? Can she see out of the pram. Is the car seat comfortable or she needs a better fit? What about the high chair? If she’s bored then she doesn’t want to go in the seats, chairs. So if you make it fun then maybe she will delight in the seat. Maybe having someone beside her in the car seat? Or you by her in the high chair.

I am currently caring for a baby who throws food while she is eating. She takes one bite while she throws food with other hand, so taking it away incase she is full isn't a option because she does this from the beginning. I don't react or go rush to clean it up, but I am sick to death of spending $$$ and time making nutritious meals just for half of it to end up on the floor. I tried to guide her hand back over and over again every time and tell her firmly not to do it, I place the food on the table, so not on a plate. She is hungry, I place her on her high chair, put some food down, she grabs food with both hand, one goes in mouth, other goes on the floor. If she did this after eating, I would take it away since she is full, but this isn't the case at all, it has become a habit. I again try and get her to eat with one hand, but she doesn't listen. I have tried your methods, but none are working. One parent suggested that I take the food away every time she drops the food on the floor, wait a while until she gets fussy and give it back, if she drops it again I take it away, do you think this is a good option or not? Obviously, I am not going to let her go hungry for hours.

Hi Emma, I love your videos! It helped me a lot! Now I have an issue. My 12 month old doesn't take anything into his mouth alone. Only his hands but thats it. He can eat finger foods, but not alone. thank you very much for this video, thing is, baby will throw certain food, but gobble others... for example, pancake will be thrown but the whole cheese will be eaten in a matter of seconds, so is she full or just picky ? knowing that she is 12 month, breastfed and "drinks" a lot before her dinner. thanks for you advice

Hi Emma! I love your videos! They are so helpful. Here’s what our problem is with our 12 month old. He’ll take food easily from a spoon or fork, into his mouth, but then he immediately spits it back out into his hand to inspect it, then he puts it back in his mouth. This causes a big mess because at least half the food ends up falling all over his shirt or down by his side. How can we get him to just chew the food the first time without spitting it out to look at it?

Hi @Sherib68 so good to hear you are liking the videos. Thanks for watching! You could try a few things with your little one. It all depends on why he is spitting the food out. - If you are placing the food into his mouth using a spoon or fork he might be spitting out the food so he can explore the food (so touch it because he hasn’t had this opportunity). You could place some of the food on his tray or table for him to touch and explore before you start feeding him. - He would also have the skills to feed himself finger food if you want to switch to finger food only. - Or you could give him a second spoon which he uses while you use another spoon. - when the food goes in his mouth you could say ‘chew,chew’ while you model chewing. You could also have a mouthful of food and chew with your mouth open and let your little one see what you’re doing with the food. - or when your little one spits out the food you could say “Food stays in the mouth or on the plate”. And when he places it in the mouth say “Chew,chew,chew.’” Hopefully one of those tips help.

My 1 y old is soooo fast with throwing anything it is extremely difficult to stop him. Also we are keeping it cool but he keep on throwing everything, from food to water cup. He can’t keep anything on the tray

I'd like to start giving solid food to my 7 months baby girl but she can't rest her feet yet (1 cm missing) on the board so i'm afraid she'll be in trouble if she needs to gag. Also she does throw intentionally the toys i give her while on her chair, then she looks down to watch how it lands 😂 i guess it's gonna help to know how to reinforce good behaviour for the food before we start ! 😊

What do I do if by persisting on my baby to eat now he is refusing any food , He was 34 weeks at birth and he turn 1 in March. How do I fix that? I am so concerned that now from eating 3 times a day and few snacks he is refusing everything. He also has never fed himself except when it came to cheerios and crackers and toasts.

Not reacting stopped it for me but then when hubby came back from deployment she started again bc he reacted! He stopped and she's still been doing it, she's 1.5 , I'll take the plate away and try feeding her which after few bites she'll starts smacking the spoon away 😑 then she's done eating! Idk what to do

My 2.5-year-old has done this since food was first offered to her. I have tried all these things, but I think maybe I'm not animated enough when praising her for doing good (because she's really fast, and I simply cannot stop her from throwing). Plus, we have carpeting throughout our apartment, and so it is very upsetting when I see spaghetti hit the carpet. She gets it halfway across the room, so rugs don't help.

Will this work with older kids? My 2 year old (25 months) has started throwing food... it's definitely driving us bonkers... she has a great compression of words and can respond very well. Complete sentences up to 7 words. And she's throwing food. Feeling a bit defeated that we haven't figured this out. Its been almost 2 months.

Hi Emma - my son is 12 months and had silent reflux with milk aversion from 2-7 month. He has been enjoying milk since 7 months. Due to his reflux issues, we started solids at 4 months and he has been eating fine until recently. In last 2-3 weeks he is refusing any and all food except for yogurt. The good thing is he is open to trying nee foods but most often he keeps it in his mouth for a minute and spits it out. Also, he sometimes keeps his mouth tightly shut when we feed him. What are some tips to increase his interest at the table ? Thank you much

I am always confused that how much quantity baby should eat in one meal, I have a bowl of 150ml, she eats food half of the bowl happily, but if anyone make her eat forcefully like by diverting her mind she eat 3/4 bowl, I know it's not right but she will eat only half bowl is it enough for her?

How do you stop your baby from screaming as soon as hes between bites or when you are getting another spoonful for him? Mine screams for more instantly. And he will eat. Hes been like this since i had him on the bottle at 2 weeks old he would scream as soon as the milk was gone no matter how much milk i gave him hehe

I’ve tried telling my baby to keep the food on the table or on the plate, I purposefully kept plates away and every so often gave the plate back til she ignored the actual plate and focused on the food that one worked, I think coz she realised if she picked up the plate I’d take it away

I'm still breastfeeding my 9months baby. Is this affecting my baby's eating cos she doesn't want to eat anything. She likes new food but doesn't eat after the first exposure. My daughter doesn't want to eat at all. If I stopped when my daughter shouts her mouth and turns away, we would never even begin with eating... so I give her some toys or some kitchen utensils at her dinning table to play and only when she is concentrated on them and doesn't draw attention to eating then I can feed her unnoticed. When she throws those things away I give her other and that play starts from beginning....

Its exactly like you said he throws food when hes finished. I say like you 'food stays on table' but I also I tell him 'push your food if youre finished', and show him the move with my hand. Its starting to work sometimes gettting better. I think its working because this way the food gets farther from him like when he throws it. Like am done with this get it away from me lol.

Hi Lillian unfortunately because I can’t see your son to assess why he is doing this and provide recommendations. A speech pathologist or a speech and language pathologist would be able to assess your son and give you specific recommendations. Alternatively you could take him to the doctor who might recommend a speech and language pathologist.

I tried this and it works but only thing is she takes a really long time to eat so I can’t just remove the food when she’s done because she will eat play eat…

So what if your baby is 22 months old and deliberately does the opposite of what you tell them. Tried all the techniques you describe and nothing works.

my 11mo niece does not throw food but she does like dropping her food to the side to feed the dog.

My little ones loved doing that too to feed our dog. It was very cute not so great for our dog's weight though!

My baby is almost 9 months old. She till date is not showing much interest in eating. She will eat only for the first few secs and will star throwng tantrum and wont eat at all. she tries to get down from the high chair and starts crying. This is an everyday scene .

I am embarrassed to say this but my 26 month old toddler barely eats anything he refuses to open his mouth, sometimes he would throw his food away. He always asks for his his bottle The only solid food he eats are cheese sandwiches, Pizza and Cookies He uses to eat rice and vegetables but not anymore I feel frustrated and worried His hight and weight goes perfectly with his age But I can’t help but to worry and feel guilty 😢

Ah damn it Im guilty of reacting when food is thrown. My twins are now 16 months old and this is becoming more and more of an issue for my stress levels and them throwing it

Emma: "Before 8 months of age they don't have a good grasp and are not really able to release an object..." My 6 month old: *Picks a food item off her tray with adult precision, moves it over to the right of the tray, releases it to the floor looking me dead in the eye, as if to say "Yeah, I'm done with that".*😀

not working. he will eat from my hand but when i try to get him to eat one piece he just throws it. hes clearly hungry. he is not a picky eater. im tired of this USA crap. you have to pay for everything to take classes it should not cost for a life a child. it should be standard to teach before the baby gets to the age. im so fed up of this cycle so i just leave the food, grab his hand when hes about to throw and put it to his face when he does eat it and clap when he eats it he started good at 6 month to eat it but now as one year... on days i have zero patience first one he throws i say all done. one piece should not be a automatic throw so that is not helpful. idk when this started to happen. or zero patience day i just hand feed him. its so irritating as f. idk when i started getting so frustrated. just like the milk he likes it but not too cold. now i gotta deal with that. i guess thats what i get for judging parents for keeping their babies on bottles. he drinks from open cup but i have to do it for him or the toss happens... hates sippy cups it gets so damn old to repeat constantly then have a fussy baby now cause hes hungry and doesnt want to do what i want him to do. just makes me mad that he done so well and i screwed it up somewhere
