Күн бұрын

Clint Howard (little "Leon") is shocked by what he discovers at Myers Lake when he takes his first trip to the Fishin' Hole--Franklin Canyon Reservoir, iconic location of The Andy Griffith Show.
Clint has lived in Los Angeles almost his entire life, working in show business since before he can remember. But he had never visited the lake where the opening to The Andy Griffith Show was filmed (at least not that he can remember). So childhood buddy Stark Howell (writer-director of the Mayberry Man movie now available on Amazon Prime Video) takes him on the trip to check it out. Along the way, Clint shares stories about the production of The Andy Griffith Show, little-known history of the relationship between Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, and other fun facts. Enjoy the ride!

I met Clint when my family and I lived in the small town of Piru, California which is a popular Hollywood backlot for filming for movies and television located about 50 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Clint Howard and Judge Reinhold were at the Piru Mansion filming a movie named PING and we were watching on the sidelines. They were between scenes and on a break and Clint and Judge were on a hold golf cart coming up the driveway and they stopped and asked us make sure to stay off the driveway because they were expecting a delivery truck and didn't want to see anyone get run over. We assured them that we would and they thanked us and returned to the movie set. A few minutes later the director called dinner break and Clint and Judge both approached us again and invited us to have dinner with them and the crew. We thanked them and politely passed on their offer because we had just eaten before we got there. They were both very friendly, talkative and approachable and my two kids that were with me still talk about meeting them too. If either of you see this we would like to say thank you again for your hospitality that day.

60 years after it was made, the show is still on rotation across the country. If there was ever a marker for success in the entertainment biz, its longevity. 150 channels and more often than not, I end up watching the channel that's broadcasting the Andy Griffith Show. The others of the day were silly comedies, but the A.G. show was as much drama as it was funny.

Grew up watching the "Andy Griffith Show" and still to this day, 9 times out of 10 if you were to stop by my house that show will be playing on my tv. I am fortunate to have several cable channels in my area that carry the show every week, I can pretty much almost have the show on 24 hours a day...LOL I loved Clint in my favorite 1986 movie "The Wraith".

I met Clint at an astronaut autograph show. It was either in New Jersey or San Antonio around 2004-6 We chatted briefly in the elevator I believe. I guess he was into wiffle ball at the time so I brought it up. He was terrific in Apollo 13.

Watching this today...reminds me of growing up in the mountains of NJ with my Dad. Fond memories. Sadly...contractor bought up land and filled in our fishing hole...needed it for just one more mansion..very sad.

I met you about 15 or so years ago when you were in South Florida, actually I waited on you in a diner and we had a nice conversation. This baby boomer who loved "Gentle Ben" was very excited. When I told people I'd met you, and they asked what you were like. I said the truth..."much cuter in person!" LOL. Hope that doesn't gross you out.

Ironically the road on which Opie and Andy walked is also the same road that "Combat" was filmed.

@@Techridr Seems obvious enough. Peaceful small town father and son strolling down a quiet path to spend time sitting on the bank of a lake fishing vs gory, violent, bloody scenes of war and destruction...

I live about an hour from 'Mayberry' which is Mt. Airy NC. I always laughed when they shot outside and you saw that Cali landscape. Nothing like the Mayberry area.

For child stars they really kept it together through the years. So glad for them. I think a big part of it was early 60s culture which for the most part didn't have a lot of mind destroying drug temptations. Of course they could have messed their lives up later but didn't.

Thank you for showing this. I’d love to visit there. What’s sad is the old 40 acre lots just a memory. To bad it wasn’t saved as a tour park. So many shows & movies where shot there. I recall an episode of the original Star Trek was shot in Mayberry. You can see it clear as a bell. Again thank you both for this. Lastly everyone of our age has alittle bit of Mayberry in us.
