Great video. I use this technique for bass and guitars as well, but it is a must on vocals.

What a coincidence. I was just looking at waves vocal rider because their sale will end today. I was wondering if a compressor would do the trick too. I don't work with vocals much, but could be good for podcasts and video narration. Doing it manually does seem like quite a bit of work judging from your tutorial, especially for long narrations, so I might just get it after all. Thanks for another great video! P.S. the (I assume) gate you were using on your own voice was rather strong in this video. I sometimes got the idea that audio was disconnected.

This is so cool. Sometimes I clip gain vocals when volume automation adds too much low end woofiness while trying to bring up a specific line and clip gaining the volume on those parts gives me better results. I’m forgetting that clip gain precedes the compressors and your idea makes great sense for smoother vocals and audio allowing for lighter compression. I’m one of these cats who has no problem doing the tedious editing of audio in sessions. I have no idea where I developed such patience… 😊

Great! And for podcasts it should be quicker because you can get away with more 90 degree angles in your clip gain.

One of my favourite (but time consuming) techniques! I think its because seeing the waveform change as im doing this still amazes me.. also really handy for de-essing nd smoothing out consonants but so easy to over do that too from experience lol i have to remember to highlight it how you do, i usually put the points in then adjust, your way is much quicker! Im wondering now.. Do you use clip gain for other techniques apart from volume levelling too? Thanks heaps for your vid! Much appreciated 🙏🕊️

Great question! I am unable to keep up with the comments section these days, so I will be answering your question in the weekly Q & A over on Patreon. Please consider supporting this channel and gaining access to all the Q & A’s. Thanks for watching! www.patreon.com/user?u=120070290&fromConcierge=true P.S. Yes, it's useful in sound design as well, and any situation where you need a second form of volume automation. Thanks!

You're Welcome! I'll talk about clip gain automation in Q&A episode #5. It's also great for leveling bass signals prior to compression.@@Owl-qh2rh

Haha clip gaining bass is exactly what I've been doing the last few days! (I'm getting quicker though! I've got several songs I'm working on so each time I learn something new I go through them all again, great way to learn). Thanks again! I see it's a monthly fee on Patreon so I'm waiting for a week with fewer bills so I know It'll go through ok.. see you there soon 🙏🕊️

I'm still learning studio one but depending on your DAW there's even faster ways to gain automate. In S1 you can ride the fader during playback and it will record your automation, and then you can fine tune afterwards. Most DAWs have this feature..

Awesome video. I have a MIDI keyboard with some knobs and I’m wondering if I’m able to set up Studio One to receive automation input from that device for this application. Any thoughts on this or is the click and drag technique the best in your opinion? Thanks!

Great Idea! I 'm talking about this a bit on this weekend's Q&A, but I think if you got good at riding the automation with a midi knob in playback mode that it would be faster and more fun than doing it with a mouse. Thanks!

Hello, on Reaper I use what is called a pre-fx volume envelope. You do not need to split the tracks into to clips, this is just an envelope applied before fx, And it does change visually the waveforms amplitude ! Once very low amplitude waveform are fixed this way I hide the envelope, so when I go to standard automation it is not in the way. However, I do not add points at the start and end of this volume change like you do, because I think compressor after that should smooth that out. Is it incorrect ? I think glitches appear if you don't cut at the correct location and it should be moved a bit, and that is different than volume jump because of the tweak

I've never mixed on reaper, but I don't think there's a right or wrong way. If you're getting a good result then I wouldn't be concerned. Thanks for the comment , and thanks for watching!
