What's strange to me is that one would expect radiant heat to be such that the snow would melt in advance of the lava flow, and yet, it appears the snow only melts upon contact with the lava.
@Tavussatwaossi
@Tavussatwaossi 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the heat radiated by the lava is reflected by the clean snow, which has a very high albedo. So, this heat is not absorbed and the snow doesn't melt before a close proximity with the lava (inducing a much biger infrared flux).

It amazes me how lacey, and filigree the top lava is. It's really kind of pretty!!!!

is it just me or has the lava texture changed? at the beginning the faster flowing stuff seemed a lot more fluid, now it seems to break apart in a crumbly fashion even when hot.
@urriss
@urriss 3 жыл бұрын
I think it more depends on where it's being observed, as in how far from "real" heat etc. Some of the lava shooting out just above this looked super fluid.
@RoxnDox
@RoxnDox 3 жыл бұрын
The lava is the same, but the behavior changes at it cools off. When hot, it is very fluid, and runs in streams like this. The crusting over keeps it insulated and it flows along like this. This is called “pahoehoe” from Hawaiian. If the flow underneath cools off somewhat, it still moves, but it’s more like a giant sheet of toothpaste. The surface parts have cooled off into thicker chunks of rock, but the motion breaks it up so you don’t get those nice flat plates. Instead you kind of get a traveling avalanche of rocks falling off, being shoved forward by the red hot mass behind, and getting buried by more rocks falling off... This is called “a’a” lava, also Hawaiian.

A commenter under Crazy Gravy's comment has an explanation. Has to do with the way snow reflects heat radiation (albedo)

@@cosmicmuffin322 Seems like a ridiculous explanation to me but the last year has been pretty ridiculous so carry on!! Where I live the snow melts when anywhere near heat. How hot is lava?
@Cellottia

@@LindaLou121 I've seen figures around 1000°C ( sorry, don't know the Fahrenheit conversion). Hot enough to fire stoneware but not earthenware pottery -- but don't quote me on that, I may have it the wrong way around! Not hot enough for porcelain, certainly.

@@LindaLou121 5 months later and your comment is the most sane thing I have read today. I also like the open-minded tone it has, humbeling. Rare find on YT. Everything is ridiculous in this world. You got born again by the Holy Spirit about a year ago or? In the middle of this bad and over-hyped flu season? Man... that would be a "culture shock" to get the scales removed from your eyes by the Lord Jesus Christ at this "crazy season". When I got saved it was so crazy seeing how much the world lies and deceive people. And "all" the album covers in my collection had either a pyramid/triangle or an eye on it, or both. It was so strange to see all the satanic stuff in our "everyday life", and the crazy MSM propaganda and all that is just normal coincidences to people. God bless! See you soon :)

@@cosmicmuffin322 Only grey, not a nice light brown caramel colour. I have been imagining pouring bags of sugar onto the lava, but realistically I think it would be so hot that it would burn to carbon and water/steam. Such a shame, as volcano toffee would be such a great souvenir!
