THIS EPISODE WAS PRODUCED WITH SPONSORSHIP FROM CLIP STUDIO PAINT.
Creating a comic book/manga is a very extensive process, with many steps even after the line-art has been drawn. I demonstrate my post-artwork scanning workflow, for my upcoming creator-owned book "Neo Wonderland" using Clip Studio Paint.

Sorry for the weird cut off in the chat at the end of the premier, usually it just lets me type until I close the browser. If you guys have any questions or comments, please reply to this comment. Thanks again for joining me everyone! We have a 45 minute episode coming up, it's super dooper special, as my long time friend/editor-in-chief of Aspen Comics , Vince Hernandez, will be dropping some gold up on this channel!

Great video Siya! I've always wanted to play around with digital coloring... I just might have to give Clip Studio Paint a go. I'm sooooo sad that I couldn't make the premier (it's -9*C here and my Dad's car wouldn't start, so I had to go take him to an appointment), I was really looking forward to joining in the chat 😮‍💨. Anyway, the page turned out great and has me even more excited for Neo Wonderland. Also super excited for the next video. Having Vince is sure to be a treat... Love the Aspen Crew!

Very fun seeing some interior art and the coloring process...your color choices are throwing off a really sweet cyberpunk vibe with the purple background and neon signage. Excited for Neo Wonderland to come out. And I am sure after all of your hard work you must be dying to share this with the world. When do you expect it to release and are you going to sell directly to readers or through an indie publisher?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
We project the Kickstarter will start late spring, early summer because the Lady Mechanika Kickstarter is happening very soon, and we're wrapping that up. It'll be direct to readers at first, then through a publisher. Thanks so much for asking! Have a wonderful weekend.

@@SiyaOum Looking forward to the kickstarter and being able to enjoy this book! How many issues is the story going to entail? Your approach of bringing your readers along for the ride on the creative side of production in these YT videos builds up a lot of anticipation. Its a very smart approach as you get to know your readers and create a loyal following and we get to follow along on your journey so that when we eventually read the book, it is a unique experience. One last thought, it would be very interesting to see your script after the book is released to see how the script translated to the page. Did you do the script differently than you would have if it wasn't you being the one to also pencil, ink, color?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for this...I don't know if the book would be where it is at, if not for the enjoyable journey with my fans and friends, who want nothing more than to see me succeed for decades. The process is so lonely, if not to share the ups and downs of it all. I write the script as if another artist would have to take over, in other words, a completed script. I will include the script along with the process in the Kickstarter book. My hope is that it will inspire the future generation of comic artists, and ones who aren't sure if they should move forward. Thank you so much again!!!@@johnf6861

@@SiyaOum Happy to hear that yo're including the script with the KS version! (you read my mind!)...very interested to see the interplay between the script and the finished book to see the choices you made in what to include/exclude in the script. I've been working on a screenplay (hammering out the board with different color notecards and itching to actually start writing scenes) and I sometimes think about the choice of screenplay versus comic book script. But, I have to focus one one thing at a time and just enjoy the process of beating out the story and actually writing it in screenplay format before I start thinking of another project or a change of medium! All the best to you as you put the finishing touches on Neo Wonderland!
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
That was a great move to do a screenplay first if you can, since you're not having to script out the panels as well, and it can be written in prose , how fun!@@johnf6861

Love this video. One question. If I compare to the coloring style of your traditional work this is very different. I understand it’s strong colors and cyber punk. So much question is how much you have colored digital? Reason I ask is through the years I have seen many comic artists who are amazing colorist traditionally when doing the jump to digital their work is very different and dare I say (not speaking about you) a lot worse. Often the colors are stiff and things to smooth / blurred. And it always surprised me. I assumed that it was due to they not being as accustomed to the new medium and lack as good control over the software tools vs their traditional color media
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
I know what you mean about digital art looking "soft" by default, likely, because of the basic brushes in Photoshop when someone is starting out. I started out as a digital colorist when I first got my comic gigs, over ten years ago, so coloring traditionally came a few years later. And you're also right, this is cyberpunk so it would be more vibrant and less textured, depending on what's on the page, than my other book "Lola XOXO" which was colored with markers, inks, and watercolors. Also, when pages get printed in comic book or any CMYK format, the colors usually become less vibrant, and darker, so shooting for brighter, more vibrant when coloring in RGB is ideal.

Really helpful vid, as usual Siya! My question is, if you were to pencil in CSP as well, would you do it at an enlarged 11x17 size or a standard comic size?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
I would still do it in 11x17, to maintain the same levels of detail when it is shrunk to the actual print size.

Quick question, when you draw traditionally, do you use an incline or do you draw on a flat surface. I draw on a flat surface For so long I’m not sure if I should try the incline. What do you think?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
I do both incline and flat. I use my laptop riser to place a drawing board on it and just draw/paint/ink my work, since I no longer have a drafting table in my home office. It does help to draw at an angle, def. worth a try. :)

Hi Siya, What do use to calibrate your monitor for your colors. My colors always come out dark. Your thoughts?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
Are you calibrating according the the Wacom Cintiq, or your regular monitor? If it is set at REC709, which is a broadcast output; colors usually turn out darker. If you calibrate according to Waco, I feel that it comes out nicer. But you should be able to try out the different options and pick the one that looks right to you.

Hi, Siya! I love all your videos, they are so inspiring! I just wanted to comment a different way to extract the background (as you do in minute 0:50), just go to Edit/ Convert brightness to opacity. In this way you can also color the lines if you lock transparent pixels. Keep up the great work!

I love your videos as always. However, I think Clip Studio Paint doesn't work for me in my opinion. I've tried with a limited trial but even with the tutorials, I had a lot of trouble getting used to the system, so sadly I gave up on the program. I've been sketching traditionally by hand and then inking and coloring on Procreate and so far that's the process that has been working for me the most. But I'm glad Clip Studio Paint works for others.

Great video! Before starting the coloring process, did you have to set the file to CMYK for printing?
@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum 6 ай бұрын
I usually color in RGB and then convert to CMYK if the publishers require that on my end. Or, just to have larger access to the colors/filters in RGB. I usually color brighter, knowing it will be converted to CMYK during the printing process.

This is why I despise digital 🤣 the process is so... artificial. It's unnatural. MAYBE you can call it art, but this is not the process of someone I'd call an artist 🤷🏾‍♂. I know you can do traditional, so I'm not talking about you.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 6 ай бұрын
So in what way is this different? What do you mean with unnatural? I have worked both digital and traditional. It’s just tools. Color theory, drawing. Composition etc. you still need to know it. And my ways you work from traditional translates to digital. And no it’s not maybe in calling it art. It’s about the process and that the creation comes from a mind. If it was not art we could not call stuff made with brushes art also. As that is a tool. Then only if you inked with your fingers it would be art right? I mean a brush is quite unnatural right? :)
@JDSCT
@JDSCT 6 ай бұрын
Have to say I disagree here... It's not like AI where you just say "I want a picture of this", and presto..done! Digital art still requires a myriad of choices and decisions to get the desired look and feel of a piece. It still requires a deep knowledge set of line, shape, color...etc. It's a different medium...but no less an art-form.
