From what I read it seems that fights to the death were more common in the really early gladiator fights. But as time went on they became very, very rare as it was expensive and time consuming to train new gladiators and people wanted to see their favorites live on to continue fighting. So gladiatorial bouts evolved from a fight to the death to nothing more than a sport. A really hardcore sport, but a sport nonetheless. Most european contact sports like wrestling, boxing and fencing can all be said to descend from gladiatorial fights in some way.

@@Shane-hp2mv the primary fuel for the human body is sugars. Fat is a survival fuel so no that's wrong. In India, Africa and the America's the majority of the native populations diet was primarily a subsistence diet. Meaning they ate a caloric deficit of herbs, berries, nuts and fruit .....when it was in its season. The only fuel these things provide is carbs there are some fats in nuts but it's negligible. They did Buffalo hunts and deer hunts but these weren't always successful and they did bring the caloric deficit back in balance. Beside this, Japanese and other whole nations did not eat any land animals until they came in contact with European people. Rome had lots of meat available because the soldiers ate salted rationed meat which was primarily mutton. In addition Roman soldiers were expert hunters and ate venison, wild goat and wild boar when they found it. It is most certainly healthier to eat a diet which primarily consists of raw fruits and vegetables. Having raw fish or cooked land animals healthy meats like lamb, beef or chicken two days out of the week. Diet should be 60% ripe juicy sweet fruit 10% veggies 10% meat 5% eggs 5% grains 5% dairy 4% nuts and 1% micros(like seamoss or other micros)

As a history buff I can confidently say everything Mike says here is facts. Gladiators rarely died in the arena, we know of many gladiator graves where their win/lose/draw rates are written. For example a Gladiator from Syria named Flamma won 21 times, fought to a draw 9 times and lost 4 times. The other facts he gives here are true as well, you can do your research to confirm. And yes you don't want your Gladiator to kill another Gladiator in the arena because then you'd have to pay compensatiın money to dead gladiators owner, and that was a lotta money (depended on how good the gladiator was). Gladiators were stars, celebrities, showmen. They weren't really there to die, they were there to entertain.

Flamma was a sirian war prisoner, like all gladiators they were prisoners. The goal of the fights was to be entertaining for the public amd the public loved death so...someone had to die. Henry David Thoreau had a debate with a farmer who raised cows about being vegetarian back in the 1800s. He told the farmer we dont need meat, that cows get muscle mass from grasses alone. However, what Thoreau didnt take into account was all the bugs that the cows ate that lived in that grass. Ants, beetles, worms, etc, are all higher in protein than the meats we consume pound for pound. Point here is that even cows arent strictly vegetarian.

Not sure why people have this romanticized idea of historical people's to justify their own shitty decisions. Because this interview was around the time that Mike went back to fighting, right? Yeah, some of the gladiators loved the attention, fanfare, and glory of being a caged animal fighting to the death (sometimes). But if these guys were to have bought their freedom and left, there really wasn't much of a life they could have outside of the colosseum. And for the days/weeks between fights, they were allowed a LOT more leniency than they would have had otherwise. It's not all that surprising that some guys wanted to live that way for the time they had left. It's not like any of us were there or can be 100% sure about fucking ANYTHING. But we have a pretty good idea that the dudes who were forced to reenact battles or fight apex predators for entertainment of enormous crowds probably weren't "choosing a vegan diet."

You, on the other hand, went with "you did a hypocrisy lolz." The burden of proof for a claim falls onto the one who makes said claim, not onto another person to disprove it. Considering that a tremendous majority of human history, down to the genetic coding of each cell, was spent with omnivorous diets, claiming that some specific group of elite warriors/combatants had a completely different diet necessitates substantiating evidence, of which none was found or presented here.

Gladiators rarely died they were like WWE they were celebrities with characters and unique costumes

Gladiators staple food was a porridge made out of barley, which is a high protein grain. It was also inexpensive at the time so the gladiator schools could afford to feed it to them. The only times they would eat meat was before a gladiatorial match, when all the gladiators would get together the night before and feast
