Now, it's a fueling point for narcotics smugglers. There's also a side note to the French/Mexican fight over it. Every year, the Mexican Navy goes out and raises a Mexican flag over the island. Later in the year, the French Navy visits, takes down the flag, and replaces it with their own. The fight is still going on!

Especially now with the Corona Virus in full force, I pray human being can just exist peacefully on planet earth. However from what I know, this just can't be done due to greed and other selfishness. There will always be those blackened hearts who know no empathy, instead seeing the worlds resources including people, as theirs to exploit. One day maybe ther will be mostly peace.

As a Mexican I really appreciate every time Porfirio Díaz is featured in one of your videos. Usually he's idealised by right-wing Mexicans or demonised by those on the left-wing. Mexican Napoleon III fits better and portraits how despotic and pretentious yet ridiculous his regime actually should have been.

Simon you should look at the story of the Dutch ship Batavia, wrecked off the west coast of Australia in the 17th century near what is now known as Beacon Island. The story of the Batavia makes what happened on Clipperton Island (as tragic as that story was) look like a holiday camp.

What about a geographics on Silimodo island in South Korea that had a camp set up for a death squad tasked with killing Kim il Sung? They ended up escaping the island as they were abused constantly and their assassination mission cancelled, a bus full of them in Seoul was involved in a shootout with grenades, some of them killed themselves then and there. 6 survived and were all tortured and executed. I think they were essentially not allowed to leave the camp on the island, when the mission was cancelled they had a mutiny.

I periodically beg for an Alexander von Humbolt video on Biographics, please please please do one for him! He is one of the most amazing people that the modern public hasn't heard of. He established man-made climate change in the 1800s, layed the ground work for modern meteorology, created biogeography, and more. He spent a total of ~6 non-consecutive months in Cuba, but is considered a national hero there for cataloguing all the indigenous wildlife and making recommendations that revolutionized their agriculture. He is also considered to be the last person to possess the totality of known human knowledge for his time, the last true polymath.

Clipperton Island became some what relevant after United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea came into force. The convention introduced the concept of exclusive economic zone that grants a state exclusive resource exploration rights in the area extending 200 nautical miles from low water mark of the coast of a teritorry. Though I have not researched if any valuable resources (including fishes) are present, it definitely has some use for France.

I guess its story isn't completely done. August 1992 I was in the US Navy, chasing drug smugglers in the eastern Pacific. We got a tip and raced to Clipperton. We actually caught them. They tried to claim they had an engine problem. We gave them some help and said we would accompany them back to Mexico, in case they broke down again 😉. Once our partner ship came over the horizon, they started throwing bags overboard like crazy.
