In addition to being an excellent endorsement for mashed potatoes, the Steven Spielberg classic changed the sci-fi landscape. Here are some things you might not know about the 1977 classic - including where that recognizable tune came from.

LadyJackieViolet I'm a bit older at 62. We went to the drive-in just in time to see a small plane fly over with dozens of colored lights. What a way to start Close Encounters! Every time I see the movie I roll out my telescope till the sun comes up. I never found the Mother ship but I can track the ISS.

The scene involving the air traffic controllers was done by Spielberg going to the Los Angeles ARTCC, telling the actual controllers the scenario, and had them play it out as if for real.
@roquefortfiles
@roquefortfiles 5 жыл бұрын
The air traffic control scene is AMAZING!!. It does not look like actors playing a role. It looks and feels like real people talking and responding to a real situation. Not a false note in it. When the pilot says "The target is exhibiting some non ballistic motion" the hair goes up on my arms. It is like listening to a radio play. By the time it is over you can't wait to see the UFO's.

No, it was not! It was shot in Alabama and was the first scene shot, while he was still filming Jaws in 1975, but Close Encounters needed to begin production by a certain date to quality for some arcane tax shelter so they shot just that one scene. The man who says "Ask if they want to report it officially" near the end of the scene had such a thick southern drawl that they overdubbed it in the movie, but if you watch the theatrical trailer you can hear the original voice. And the technical jargon was written by Spielberg's collaborator Dr. J. Allen Hynek, though he got the location of Indianapolis Center wrong in the coordinates. "Restricted area 2508" is in California and Nevada
@jgrab1
@jgrab1 3 жыл бұрын
The air traffic controller scene was shot in Alabama, had nothing to do with LA ARTCC. Dr. J Allen Hynek wrote most of the dialogue, and it was all scripted. Bob Balaban talks about this extensively in his book on the making of the film. Also, the guy who says "Ask them if they want to report it officially" had such a thick southern accent that his line is overdubbed in the movie. In the pre-release trailer you can hear his actual southern voice.

If someone else were to film this scene today, it would be ruined because they would create elaborate CGI to show the encounter between the Unidentified Ariel Phenomena (UAP) and the airliners. What Steven Spielberg learned from filming Jaws was that not showing something can be more intense and suspenseful.
@pisachanation414

They were actually real air traffic controllers who played those parts. They were given the basic scenario of the scene, and pulled it off beautifully.

And the TransAmerica building, a Volkswagen bus, a submarine, the R2-D2 android, a U.S. mailbox, an aircraft, and a small cemetery plot, and a whole bunch of other things. But as for the admonition "if you look closely," only R2D2 is visible. The rest can only be seen if you examine the actual model, which is on display at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. There are many pictures of these objects on the internet taken by tourists, however. Just google it.

"Watch The Skies" was originally intended to be the follow up to CE3K ...a much darker movie that featured evil alien visitors but Spielberg shelved that for a even darker movie 1981's "Poltergeist" and would return the alien themed movies with E.T. in 82 ..

Actually it was great advertisement for Coke. Columbia was looking for a buyer when Close Encounters was being made, as it was close to running out of money (and Close Encounters, had it not been a hit, would have bankrupted them). They were courting Coke, so there is Coke product replacement throughout the film. Cans of Coke, logos, signs, trucks, vending machines and many other ways of saying "We want to be bought by Coke." Sure enough, in 1978, the stock much improved because of the movie, Coke bought Columbia.

Phillip Dodds who is the guy playing the huge Arp synthesizer was not an actor. He was the guy who delivered and set up the synth and demo’d it for Spielberg. The director liked his look and asked “do you have any acting experience”. He was cast on the spot. The 100k synthesizer was ruined by all the smoke and chemicals used on set. ARP sued but was never compensated. They also lost their main demonstration guy for 9 weeks for filming. ARP went bankrupt 5 years later

Just writing my thoughts... the movie is really about and representing a spiritual awakening(kundalini awakening) or in the modern world an existentiël crisis with psychosis and manic episodes(the opening of the third eye, pineal gland, pls check---> vision of the third eye ancient mystery channel)...so what does it all mean? Its about a human being experiencing this awakening and the consequences it brings or may bring.losing your job, losing family and friends,seing visions, behaving weird compared to onconcious human beings,and fiending understanding and comfort and love with others that haid same experiences (like the women he kisses)... so the aliens represent the devine conciousness or (god) as people understand it.the goal of a spiritual awakening is to surrender and allow it u to be taken into heaven,through an ascending proces...jump into the abyss and unknown...that no one...or almost no one dares or wants to do.

I saw this film when it came out and we all we could do was make jokes to get through it. It is terribly over rated. I thought you were going to point out all the homages in the film. The only one I thought I saw was when Dreyfuss and the girl are climbing onto Devil's Tower there is a shot of their hands helping one another up the incline. That was taken directly from a shot in North by Northwest where Cary Grant helps Eva Marie out of the Mt Rushmore scene and into the upper birth bed on the train. Other than that, this was a pretty forgettable film.
