Neuroanthropologist and co-chair of the N2 Conference Terrence Deacon discusses the noosphere, biological evolution, and the upcoming N2 conference hosted by scientific multimedia non-profit organization Human Energy to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Noosphere.
100 years ago, Philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin introduced the concept of a planetary mind called the Noosphere. Society has rapidly changed via technological progress and scientific breakthroughs, what is the current relevance of the noosphere? How does the noosphere intersect with biological evolution? And with a more fragmented landscape, could there be a new "sphere" on the horizon?

Great conversation! I’m onboard with all of it. Evolution is now in our own hands and we are certainly capable of moving toward the good future we all want. Thank you.

@@HakuYuki001 Maybe that’s why this current age has been called the Anthropocene. Our species has become so dominant that our actions, wise and not wise, are determining the future of our planet. Our biosphere, culture, politics and religions are obviously all affected by what we do today & in the near future. What’s wrong with humanism?

I really like the concept of the Noosphere. Teillhard de Chardin popularized the idea and the theory that Evolution is guided by increasing complexity and teleology which consists of the Geosphere, leading to the Biosphere, leading to the Noosphere.

IMHO Teilhard de Chardin in the _Phenomenon of Man_ intended the noösphere to be the driver of the last stage of evolution, culminating in the Omega Point. Daniel C. Dennett's _Singularity_ perhaps?

Noosphere sounds to me like Rupert Sheldrake's morphic resonance, without the nuttiness. At some point could the noosphere have the effect of energy fields that can on its own have a sort of converging stickiness? Deacons doesn't go here, probably because in part that everyone has seen the unmitigated condemnation of anyone willing to merely propose that question. But when we discuss emergence, I dont see how one could ignore that possibility.

If you understood anything of deacons view of language and of causality, you wouldn't ask him if the noosphere was substantive. His whole point is that substances are the only part of the story.

So first he tells us materialists and spiritualists so to speak come together and learn from each other. And than he states that those spiritualists views are dangerous which is rather rich. I say this materialist psychologist next to a eastern guru just days ago on KZfaq and all they did was go against each other. Those are like dogs and cats that is just how it is..

I'm not sure I follow tbh- yes, we have pooled our knowledge together into one large repository that we can all access now- but how is that creating a collective consciousness? That seems to be what he's suggesting- that somehow all the data on the internet and in books and so forth will self-assemble and start having goals or something- wtf?? I don't get it.

@@stoneysdead689 you seem to understand my metaphor. It’s what the noosphere is all about. Understanding WHAT it is is very simple. Understanding HOW a collective mind will emerge is the hard part. And that’s where my analogy comes in. Hope this helps

From my hour of looking at the concept. The Noosphere seems to be a new age concept promising a great new future of purpose for mankind. Hmmm ! An interesting, but totally unrealistic idea considering he is taking about this humanity. Where we have to make world ending weapons to protect ourselves other tribes that just as aggressive as we are. And where tribilistic religious and cultural biases still rein supreme.

The noosphere is anything but a new age concept. It is a pivotal stage in the evolutionary development of mankind and was as inevitable as the emergence of science or powered flight. It is a direct adjunct of the human brains expanded size and growing capacity to interact with and alter its surrounding environment. The noosphere represents an extension of thought by artificial means whereby knowledge and information is socialized and preserved for future reference. It forgets nothing and its growing body of knowledge and information is cumulative. I guarantee that every scientists or medical professional consults the internet when confronted with a question or problem that seems unsolvable. All of us whether we know it or not are presently immersed in the noosphere. This computer, my television, my phone and all digitized and non-digitized forms of human communication are parts of the noosphere but it's their linked connectivity that ultimately gives the noosphere its power. The noosphere is changing the world and its influence is expanding rapidly.

@@michaelmckinney7240 It's easy for someone to look at this and imagine that some sort of new age spiritualist nonsense, but I agree with you it's entirely rationally grounded. Undirected evolution leads to the development of directed, intentional and goal drive intelligence. We have a thorough and actionable account of that process and we understand it very well. Then that goal driven intelligence takes control of physical and informational development, directing it towards long term goals. It sounds teleological, but there is a distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic teleology. Intrinsic teleology is the one we're used to, the idea that natural processes have goals intrinsic to them and without any external guidance. The noosphere is about the rise and dominance of extrinsic teleology, which is activity directed by an intelligence that directly manipulates causal forces towards it's objectives.
