Thankfully one time in early 1978 I had the good fortune to witness a whole concert in a very small club, and I was seated in the closest seat to his right. I could clearly see both hands and both feet. I was only about 10-12 feet away from him. I was so overtaken by what I witnessed that night, I could barely speak on the drive home! Occasionally I would mutter something like "I just can't believe it," or "How is that possible?"

Holy shit. This is feakin insane.I saw Buddy a couple times in high school. Knew he was great, but didn’t realize how great. And, no matter what other drummer’s styles were, they respected Buddy for his abilities, fire, and musicianship. Beyond the drumnastic things and incredible technique, if you listen to him backing up Bird and other greats you’ll hear the musicality underneath it all. He was more than just an other worldly technician, as people like Philly, Max, etc knew. And, he elevated drums and drumming to a level where the general public noticed, for better or worse. They ( unfortunately) didn’t know who Max, Philly, Elvin, Roy, etc were, but at least they knew that there was something called “jazz drumming”.

Buddy's phrasing was superb. Not to mention all of the notes that he played. His notes had meaning and forward momentum. I saw Buddy and his band in 1977. Went back stage and got his autograph. He just looked at me as if to say,"Hey kid. How'd you get back here? "He walked off his bus back stage and I was there with a friend waiting. Never forget it.

He was amazing absolutely, and I love watching and listening to him; always will. But some of the comments on here make me think that admirers think he was the only person to ever master these rudiments (ie: "the best single stoke roll by anyone , ever" ) . We must realize that rudimental masters have been around for ages and although most stay in the orchestra, few venture behind the jazz kit. I learned my chops in Pipe Band and my heros were Alex Duthart and Jim Kilpatrick --and there's no doubt in my mind that if you saw a snare drum solo of their's most people here would be astounded. Kilpatrick in particular I believe would amaze Buddy . Just a thought. Also if you haven't seen Evelyn Glennie--check her out--she's deaf, yet an amazing drummer . I am not putting Buddy down--he's the best in so many ways, but there are others too that deserve recognition.

For me, I think this is where Buddy excelled. I was a student of the drums for just a few years when I was a child, in the 70's and we learned from the Buddy Rich book of Snare Drum Rudiments (my school excelled at music and for those few years we played all over the country, on tv and even abroad - some of those musicians became top professionals including my friend, Michael Bradley who plays drums in the band Sax Appeal. Me, I took a different path altogether). So, yes, of course I knew a LOT about him, especially as our drum teacher I'm convinced tried to behave like he did, for they both were my idols back then (of course not now) - I used to call Buddy Rich "The Zeroth Drummer". Basically, I held the belief that he wasn't the best drummer in the world, he wasn't the number one or the 1st best, he was so far ahead of the rest of the best that he was like the Zero'th ! Way ahead of the rest of the best. My friends used to laugh at me :) (saw him once in concert in London at Lewisham ! I was right at the back and remember him complaining about the spotlight directly on him !).
@cloudview7474 жыл бұрын
Thank you for you comment! I was unfamiliar with the term zeroth. So I looked it up online: "The word zeroth is used to suggest a level of importance even higher than first." I love it! And agree completely. Buddy Rich was and is the zeroth!

One of THE Masters at work. On this great Earth there have been just a few. Some have literally beaten themselves to death. That said, I tip my hat to others as Tony Williams, Louie Bellson, Billy Cobham, Earl Palmer, Hal Blaine and Benny Benjamin to name a few. Rich was a crazy demanding band leader, legendary for cursing out his bands. I mean, he went OFF. Not much is known about Benjamin who, just listening to those old MoTown records, must have been a most beautiful soul, a commanding drummer who kept everyone informed on where they were in any given chart through his breaks which were golden.
