Saying the animators need a career change is realllly disrespectful. I dont think you have any idea how the animation pipeline works. These artists are professional? The "bad" character designs were made through trial and error through many artistic hands. This movie is very charming especially the second one! Some very clear, silhouetted, Characters with fluid movement. You show a picture of the couple from rio. Noticed how I said couple? I dont remember their names! Because they are forgettable! But flint and sam are so clear have have such a distinct look that its easy to picture them in my head. Character designers and animators are different departments. There are color stylists, lighting departments, rendering, storyboard artists so many people! I believe they did do their job wonderfully. You can not like the movie, but I recommend actually getting to know how films work.

It's a harmless movie. Also I just love the father's design with the huge eyebrows, moustache no eyes, I can't help but like the movie.

I'm starting to hear that you want all humans to be the same design. Anything that doesn't look like the humans you wanted isn't human. I've seen worst human designs done out of laziness without ever designed such as Nuttiest Nutcracker, Food Fight, Delgo, Son of Mask, Magic of Oz, Deitch's Tom and Jerry and their Hobbits, my list goes on. I give this movie's credit for actually having a useful cop when we have too much movies w/ useless cop(s), and having a useful female character with a personality when most movies are only there to be saved or act like Bella Swan.

I never knew people disliked this movie that much. I think the first one has an interesting charm to it, even the odd animation style (I'm a huge animation fan too). I thought it was funny too. The second one was horrible though. But hey, I respect the other opinion.

I've seen this movie only once, and honestly, I thought it was pretty decent. Not anywhere near as good as The Lego Movie but not really deserving of the Animat's seal of garbage either. I'd honestly give it a 7/10

As an artist, and aspiring animator, I actually liked some of the animation. I do agree that the designs are somewhat terrifying, but I like Flint's design because it captures his crazy personality. I also liked some of the over the top movements, which made me laugh. At least the animation has fluidity rather than stiffness. The humor is definitely a hit or miss, with more misses that hits. Looking at this review, the movie isn't as good as I remembered it to be. I was also less mature back then, so my viewpoint has changed.

Yeah, as a professional animator I gotta say you could learn a thing or two about animation by studying it, cause this review isn't claiming it's just an opinion, rather you claim a lot of stuff that any character designer or animator would kindly tell you you're wrong about. Honestly this just goes to show that super fans think themselves experts in the medium and always end up becoming critics that really don't know a thing about animation. I keep noticing there's a clear lack of knowledge to what is great animation when most people think it's about it being fluid and looking like disney.

I completely agree with the animation is only for kids stereotype issue. I'm 20 and adore animated films but my parents don't understand and tell me to go watch some "actual movies". It's frustrating because there are so many animated films that teach mature morals and have so much depth but if it's not live action with real life actors people think it's toddler fodder. So much ignorance in this world today isn't there?

The secret to good animation is just one word:moderation. Keep the fluidity of your character's movement at just the right spot. Too little :it becomes stilted and awkward. Too much :it becomes demented and, in some cases, nightmare fuel. This also goes for facial animations as well.

This movie is kind of a guilty pleasure for me.

I actually think the animation style is really cute. The biggest issue with it is that the animators seem to think being stylized means you don't need to give the characters distinctive individual designs. Except for the officer and Flinn's dad, they've all got one of two faces.

I am not the fan of this movie, but I LOVE the soundtrack. That music is awesome. Deal with it people. I love it.

I know that a lot of people (like this guy) want animation to be more respected as a form of storytelling and that is understandable but to do this some say that there should be less movies with cartoony animation. But the part of the point of animation is that it exaggerates what things should look like which unfortunately appeals to kids. Making things look as realistic as possible is a waste of time because if you wanted to do that you could just make it live action. This film fully embraces the fact that it is animated and uses that to its advantage. Also part of what is great about animation is that all animated films are very different from one another and if they all had ultra realistic cgi animation then personally, I think it would be less interesting. This is probably clear by now but I really like this movie and I think the story is funny, unique and even quite heartwarming at times. 6:00 Also JonTron wasn’t talking about this movie when he said that.

Personally, I thought the animation was cartoony, which I enjoy. Although the characters are a tad bit bland and so is the story...I think it could have been a lot worse as a book adaptation.

I absolutely loved both movies, they're creative and zany, sure they're not perfect, but to me they're above average and have a certain mix of detail and style that makes them all the more lovable.

My major problem with the character animation is that the movie was based on a BOOK, which had it's own art STYLE to it. I mean, it's one thing to make the design look like that if the BOOK had that art style, but no.

I know it's an old video... But did he really say main character is stupid??? Maybe he should try making a machine that turns water that is switching from the gas state to the liquid state i to food!

1st: The story is based off of Flint wanting to help his hometown by creating food but goes wrong because he wanted attention and was gullible to the Mayors manipulation, this is a unique story as theres no other like it, yes it uses the same old "hero does a thing, thing goes wrong, hero goes to fix said thing, day saved" but so had many other films, hundreds, no, thousands of films and movies have done this, so this piece of info is just AniMat hating something that has existed in literally everything, this has existed even before the television was created 2nd: Yes, all the subplots actually fit with the while "food falling from the sky", in the story you can tell (it even explains it) that Flint just wants to impress his Father, and is unable to do so as his many inventions have failed to impress him, all the subplots fit into what Flint has been doing and some even explain what the reason behind Flints actions have been to create food, again, its just AniMat hating something thats already explained but failing to see it 3rd: AniMats basically eating his own words here, he said that the characters belong in thier own world, hes stating that the animation and its characters are basically trash in comparison to Rio's characters, which makes no sense because in both movies you get to know the characters one way or another, Flint is a nerdy, confident, kind, and protective type of person (and many other things i failed to mention since i havent watched this movie in while), and here he is saying the characters are, from my understanding, "tasteless" compared to Rio's characters, also, the animation isnt "Decent", its actually one of the best of the best of its time, and of its time that was 2009, animation in that time was getting better and better, Cloudy was the best of its animation, until other anumated films came out that were better in animation Ok Jesus fucking christ, in conclusion, AniMat is just making baseless points to have hate for a film he doesnt want to admit is even "good" just because it was made by Sony, in the end, all he is doing is making a very stupid opinion that anyone here knows is very, very stupid, the animation, story, characters, my god he hated the characters, thats why the guy with that red hat and beard is there so much, hes supposed to represent the townspeople there in both films hes in, and much more, halfway through the video and i can already see so many issues about AniMats review of this movie, his hate comes from the company, reason? I do agree with AniMat's views on this movie, but the thing that makes me not like this movie is how far/hard it tried to be different from the book of the same name. If only it had a more creative plot, rather then a bunch of tired,old cliches, uninspired characters, uncreative plot, and animation that looks like something straight out of a Nickelodeon original movie.

You know the only things I liked out of this movie? Earl, the animated food, the scenes in it that were taken out of the book, and the score.

When they first aired it on TV I only saw the last 10 minutes or so and thought "What is that shit?!", the next day I watched the rerun to at least know what the hell was going on and I couldn't hate the movie anymore since I absolutely adored Flint's dad. He was written wonderfully in my opinion and I could feel his struggle. The rest of the movie... yeah, admittedly forgettable, but that guy alone made it worth watching for me.

This movie did something new for animation. It had computer-animated characters animated like a looney tunes cartoon. Animated movies today owe a lot to this movie. Even the Lego Movie or Spider-verse. This kickstarted stylization and creativity in the industry. I feel like you're picking on this movie for everything that made it special. I think it's a great movie with a cartoony art style, great visual jokes, and a compelling narrative to hold it all together. I don't mind if you hate this movie but don't treat your opinion as fact, that's just disingenuous.

Beware: This comment is very long. In my opinion, Story: The setting of this story is pretty interesting. It takes place to a depressing island called Swallow Falls where the only food they eat, is Sardines. Now here is the story. It may be that underdog story, It does have good things surrounding it, In the beginning, It shows Flint at school where he showcases his invention and after that one difficulty, the kids call him a Failure and Flint's narration does define the theme very good, And here's who encouraged him to live his dreams, her mother. She told Flint that he may have failed alot, but as long he keeps trying harder, he will live to his true potential. And the mother giving the coat to Flint is meant to be an encouragement for Flint and and her support for her son. And then Flint continues to invent and his parents proceed and that's Flint's backstory. And then next, we are given a montage of Flint continuing his progress of inventions that have yet failed. And after seeing Flint doing many attempts of failing, He is afraid that he might never see his son's potential and may think it is time to stay safe, and later that moment later, he refused to give up. Then we are given the introduction of Sam Sparks. She starts of as a dreamer to becoming a successful weather girl by going to Swllow Falls. He tries to make the FLDSMNFR work by applying cables from the electric tower, but then later his invention flew away. Then they Flint meets Sam and they were ready to give up. Until the raining cheeseburgers started raining which is the sign of Flint's invention being successfully working and with that Sam can used this weather to save her job. So, we are given the scene of the demonstration of how the machine works. And then we are given a scene of Flint taking orders from the citizens of Swallow Falls. And then Tim Lockwood asks his son if he could help him, but he said that his working with the mayor. Anyway, we are given the wholesome arc of Officer Earl trying to get a present for his son, and after Flint's reason of his desposition of him. Earl says Father's are trying to make their son happy, And Atleast Flint knows that why his father wanted to do the Bait Tackle Shop job with his Father because he never got time to spend time with him. And with that Flint orders a ridiculous Ice Cream wonderland for Kal. And we are given enough time to see them bond, Which is actually wholesome. Then we are given the scene of Flint having a date with Sam, Sam explains the reason why she started off as a weather girl instead of a Nerdy Meteorologist. And what the interesting part is that there was never a person who supported her, so she gives up and there was never a reason to give in her dream. That is before Flint tries to encourage her, by giving her a redo of her looks like back when she was a kid. And that's what sparked their romance. And then later on his invention goes wrong and he tries to stop it, but due to some difficulties, he couldn't. And he was ready to give up, until Tim Lockwood gives him his Son's coat (along with a fish metaphor) to finally show his support for his son like what his wife did, and that was a wholesome part as well. So Flint, Sam, Manny And Brent (The bully of Flint Lockwood) Go to find the machine and shut it down. And as the weird climax goes on, In the final fight scene we got to see Flint Lockwood not using a Plot Device, but a memory of his past which is the spray on shoes, which is actually fantastic. Them after that, we see the emotional speech of Tim's care for his son. And that's the story. I think the storytelling of this is compelling, while there are flaws noticable, it doesn't fail to carry it's theme and the ridiculous plot makes it a fun to watch. Animation: I think it's safe for me to say that other than the character designs, the creativity of the foods and the interesting concept of the city is actually pretty great. And while the designs may be weird at times, it doesn't have to be that realistic. The cartoony design s really work for this movie. The character movements really support the wacky over the top silliness of this movie, such as Flint Lockwood doing walking or running, it is hysterical. And Tim's design is peak, which is certified peak animation. The animation is definitely has some creativity and funny animation surrounding it, and while the character designs are weird, they are atleast Tolerable. Otherwise what if the animators of Foodfight! took this IP? Characters: Flint isn't just some underdog scientist, He is a protagonist motivated by his mother to capture his dreams, and he fails so many times even he doesn't care because he believes that he will be successful in the future. Then we have Sam, and while she may be dorky at sometimes, she does have a believable backstory at why she couldn't capture he real dream and instead becomes a weather girl instead. The Father Tim Lockwood cares for Flint and the reason why he wants his son to stop, is because after seeing all of his failures, he lost his faith of seeing his son's true potential. And if you keep watching, you can see his progress getting good. Also, I think the mother is the most least mentioned character of the movie, and while she does get a little screentime, you couldn't deny of her supportive love for her son, she believes of how her son can became a great scientist in the future, and that part where she gives her the cloak, is a symbol of support that Flint can achieve something fantastic. Then We have Earl, the meme. And with all that aside, he is a good father trying to make his son happy by getting a present for his son, that's a good side character. And we have the side character that improves overtime, Brent starts of as a Bully of Flint, and why does he have to go up there to find who he is? That's confusing, But he does contribute during the climax so I'll give him that. And the mayor is an obnoxious villain, It's unsatisfying that he gets away after causing the rising problem of this movie. And for me, characters are believable, and understandable, despite the odd first and middle screentime of the bully and the unsatisfying villain who never did anything. Overall: This movie has fun characters, a ridiculous plot, Hilarious humor, and creative animation. And despite of it's flaws, It's characters and the strong emotional core, is what stands for this movie. And I understand if you hate it. But for me, I love this movie. Story: 8.5/10 Animation: 7/10 Characters: 9/10 8.5/10
