Back in the day, the Merchant Venturer ran from Weston-super-Mare to Paddington and is the train I used to catch to go home from school every day. Probably behind Clun Castle on occasions.

What's the point of paying for a steam train ride, when there is a diesel loco at the rear doing half the work ? It therefore is impossible to time the train, to give you the figures for the steam loco's power output and performance etc. Waste of time, which is why I will NEVER buy another ticket for any of these pseudo steam train trips. It's just a rip off !!!!

I think James the diesel Loco is on the rear for two reasons, one is ETH and the second is for Shunting purposes at the destination, as there’s no Pilots left at any stations.
