Here's a walk-through of the process of replacing the Clutch Slave Cylinder on a 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon with a stock 2.1L waterboxer engine. The process should be very similar on any year of Vanagon.
I recently could not shift into any gear in my van without pumping the clutch several times, so replacing the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinders were my first attempts at fixing this. Yours may need replacing if there is any brake fluid underneath the rubber boot, or any fluid leaking from your slave cylinder upon inspection.
Most people recommend replacing your Clutch Master Cylinder as well when replacing your Slave Cylinder. I ended up doing both, and then bleeding the clutch system once complete!
Feel free to reach out with any questions or video recommendations, and I'll do my best to help out! Staaay coastin!
