I recently installed a Tomei 1.5-Way LSD in my base-model 370Z and in this video, I detail the good and the bad about running this differential in a daily driver.

Great video, with V8 torque in a open diff I know exactly what you mean about having to drive carefully through a corner. I drive this thing like a semi truck and sometimes I wish I could plant it properly because the rest of the car is somewhat stable.

I thought I had a VLSD but learned later that i'm running a open diff and TBH that blew my mind. I'm running some PS4S tires and i'm thinking to myself "Wait so I have this much traction on a OPEN DIFF???!! So what happens when I go for something like a 1.5 Way Diff??" If you haven't tried them I'm running the base 09 model with 8 and 9 inch stock rims and running 235/45/18 and 275/40/18 and man even with the open diff the car is a blast! Can't wait to get this done in the future!

The noise is really dependent on the type of disks. Your diff may have metallic discs which are the most noisy. Sintered discs and carbon-lined discs also exist. Finally you must use a suitable oil, one with “LS” on the name such as Millers CRX LS 75W90 NT, or Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-90, assuming the diff oil is separate. These a long chain lubricants specially formulated for plated diffs and will help with the noise (but you cannot use LS oils in synchro boxes: the synchros don’t bite with those very slippery oils).

And I just learned about “Motorcraft additive friction modifier” - either add that to your regular diff oil, or check out one the the LS ones.

Some diffs offer differnt ramp angles and presets making the rear end much much more streetable

Really well put together video. Honestly the only review on a differential I've seen on a Z in KZfaq. I'm just wondering why you didn't consider WaveTrac? Zero Maintenance, Zero Noise, No Extra tire ware, and LifeTime Warranty. I've never heard of one underperforming and I've never seen one that couldn't handle what was being put to it. I used one on my 500 WHP Evo9 MR, worked so well it was almost too good to be true. Got one for my 370 also, but haven't installed it yet, I'll link you when I do the install. Cheers Brother.

Mainly a price thing. I budgeted $1000 for the diff. Understandably there are better diffs out there but I have other projects in the pipeline I am trying to get to.

It enough time so I’m going to finish the Civic and RSX first and then my Silverado, then I’ll hunt for a 2010 40th anniversary Z to install all the build parts I have for it. Great video! I just got my tomei 1.5 way installed on my Miata. Has the same issue as you stated. Did you try adding some friction modifier. Some say it will help a lot in terms of noise.

Not yet, that's something I plan to try at the next oil change. I'm over the sound at this point, doesn't bother me but causes bystanders to worry that the car is on it's last leg. 😂

Hello. I am going to upgrade my differential as well coming from an open diff. I want to have the option of drifting sometimes but I don’t want to sacrifice drive ability too much like the clutch types. I was thinking about either a qualife or a Z1 street pro diff. Which one would you prefer to be better for me?

It’s a track diff you have to get use to the noise and extra maintenance if your going to use as a daily driver

i think you bought a race specification as tire marks would suggest that. what did you go for ?. i had a nismo 2 way back in 2005 and it wasnt that bad. but very noisy

I got a KAAZ (SuperQ) 1.5 for my HiAce van. I found changing oil brands made the chatter go away.

What other diffs did you research and consider before purchasing the Tomei? Quaife seems to be the most popular for the 370Z.

It was between Quaife, Tomei, Os Giken, and Kaaz for me. I was largely driven by pricepoint because I had budgeted only $1000 for the diff. The other three run you over the $1200 mark. Based on a handful of tomei diff reviews I hadn't seen anyone complaining about quality, everyone had good things to say about it, increased security through the corners etc etc. That's what drove my decision.

The Quaife is a different type of differential, Quaife is better for time, not as good for drifting.

I just picked up a 1.5 kaaz that I'll be swapping in my turbo lexus making some serious power. Will a 1.5 help with traction with roll racing in addition to dig racing?

Yes,if you find yourself slipping tire at a roll, a proper diff helps.

you only got the clicking in tight turns? when my diff is warmed up it clicks also in light turns, do you got this too?

Yeah it clicks unless I'm giving it a lot of throttle to lock the diff. I am going to experiment with some friction modifiers but ultimately I'm going to switch to a helical type diff.

If you want to stick with Nissan's VLSD, it'll be an easier swap for sure.

A less aggressive clutch type LSD would eliminate the tire skipping when low speed cornering, right? If the diff had smaller/fewer clutches it would only engage at higher torque values, wouldn't it?

@@thecarizon504 That would be a torsen differential, right? I'm currently looking for a diff for my e46 to get it drift ready, so a torsen diff wouldn't be an option for me unfortunatly. Is the clutch type LSD too annoying to daily in your opinion? Why the swap?

This was very helpful! I have an S14, it had a welded diff, so I swapped it to an open diff from a J30 and it's shit! I gets stuck just simply driving into parking lots with small inclines if I don't enter it fast enough...from watching this video I'm thinking of going LSD/Posi you think you could do another video describing those?

Any type of Torque Biasing diff if you care about performance, or if you just daily drive, an open diff should be all you need. It sounds like the one you got was already damaged/worn.

The click will be present but moat likely to a lesser extent than is seen in the cheaper tomei LSD.

@@herrmeez you will probably experience some skid like I get but you might be better off asking Z1, they sell the majority of diffs available for the 370Z and have had experience with each. They should be able to tell you the performance different. Plus you can always use friction modifiers to help reduce how aggressively it locks.

Cusco LSDs allow you to change the cam angle which results in different locking strengths and speeds. Great for track use. From their product guide: "Cusco LSD has two different cam angle settings in one LSD unit which allows you to switch different cam angles without purchasing any additional parts"

So how come a lot of cars come with open diff from the factory and there is no noise, I guess when you go cheap that's what you get, I wouldn't mind spending more in a better diff.

Price doesn't imply low noise. Open diffs are quite because of there design. A clutch type diff relies on a series of clutch packs and a cam that can make varying amounts of noise. In hindsight, I would have gotten the helical lsd for it's less aggressive lock and lower noise.

I have motor mounts in my q50, also metal bearing in the suspension arms front and rear, there is some vibration and some noise but nothing mayor, personally that noise is a deal breaker and it takes away the placer of driving the car. I'll get the z1 lsd were there is no noise

It's very hard on every drive train (clutch, driveshaft and axles). It will ping, pop and make horrible noises.

thanks for the important info on LSD, i drive my car to work and back at 120 miles a day and i dont think LSD will be beneficial and cost worthy on maintenance.

Deffinetely don't get a clutch type LSD, driving around parking lots is brutal. And if you aren't taking it around a track or getting aggressive with it in the turns there's no need to upgrade.

No joke but you can take some of the corners you demonstrated twice as fast in a normal open diff on a Z and not break traction. For better comparison you should actually say you're in Mexico and show us something that truly makes a good case for it. The noise really doesn't bother me that's what you get with big brakes, more sophisticated diffs etc. It's a sports car not a commuter car. One of my projects for the Z later on will be a 1.5 way diff and twin turbos.

I mean 90 kph is kinda slow through that slight Bend, but 180 is not possible without crossing the white line, extrending the radius. He is not on slicks or semis. Also why break the law on camera?

If you keep the same setup after changing to a clutch pack, yes you will get understeer that why you need to rebalance the car afterward...

Viscous is more laggy, lossy and weaker than torsen, and yet I can literally feel the viscous lsd in my mate's 240awkw bugeye wrx hooking up and rotating off it... Quaife are considered the best torsen lsd's by many. Not everyone wants an antisocial track rat gokart for a street focused build. Grow up and touch grass forzakid.
