A question we get asked all the time “Is a plate differential better than an ATB?” We put both to the test on the same day, same conditions, same car and same driver and share our initial feelings, review the data and show a side by side comparison.

I put Quiafe ATB in front and rear on my BF5B Subaru Legacy GT. The car really obeys around the corners. Subaru factory way is very weak mechanical rear helical front. I got the inspiration from Evolution AYC. AYC uses G sensor and steering angle to calculate how much torque is delivered to left or right wheels. In other words, AYC forces the car to turn. Quaife can partially imitate that without sensors. Centre differential is 4kgfm so front and rear can move independently. No matter what Evolution can corner better than factory Subaru on a track. DCCD is for rally, not really for track. In fact I used factory 6MT DCCD on track. It’s good but the car wants to oversteer on exit.

I was shocked to hear that they said people generally consider a helical diff to be worse than a plate diff on the track. I've always known it to be the opposite.. Helical is great for road courses.

By plate diff do you mean a clutch type lsd? If so, how many clutches are being used (almost all multi clutch type lsds will let you choose how many clutches will engage to select how strong the lockup will be) Osgiken clutch diffs can be anywhere from 3 clutch/disc's per axle to as many as 7 pairs per axle At the end of the day all lsds work via friction. If it isn't an active diff the only thing the separates different differentials with regards to performance is how much torque the system can ultimately bias, the engagement profile and whether there is differentiation between positive and negative torque. All this talk about one system better than another is dumb. With regards to performance only the discussion of whether a specific model is appropriate or not on a specific instance should look at (maximum torque the system can handle, engagement profile, positive/negative torque bias), NOT what method of uses to deliver these characteristics.

Hello Dominic, Thank you for your comment. We agree the way the plate differential is set up will affect the way it operates. We also know that their are people that swear by plate differentials and we will never change their opinion. What we wanted to do is test the car as it comes brand new from Caterham and then with one of our ATB differentials. What we were trying to show is that the ATB is an easier differential to drive with and can be just as quick (if not quicker) than a plate differential in this example. This coupled with the zero maintenance of an ATB compared to a plated differential shows the advances of the ATB differential.

@@RTQuaifeEngineering yea, as a stock Caterham vs helical diff comparison, this is fine. My ND mx5 came with a "plate" style diff except it has ONE plate per axle, so it's basically only a bit better than an open diff. I'd say that the main benefit of a helical diff over a "normal" clutch pack lsd is in noise & maintenance department. This is probably true across all different levels of application. It's probably easier to manufacture a helical diff to have tighter tolerances than a clutch pack diff. That doesn't mean it's easier to make a helical diff, cutting helical gears is a lot harder than making spider gears and clutch packs and whatever but given the construction there's always going to be a bit more slack in a clutch diff than a helical diff. The downside of the helical diff is that you can't actually get enough friction in there to bind/lock the axles which depending on your application, may matter a lot of not at all.

Hello, I've already fitted my Cat 485 (bmw diff) with an atb in place of the titan oem plate diff. This one was worn out in 10000km... It would be interesting to show us your lap times to mesure the gain or loss of each system.

Sooooo why is it quicker? Whats the functional difference between them? Subjective driver opinion is pretty meaningless in a marketing video...

Hi is it normal for the diff to be quite noisy when coming off the power?

Hello, No this is not normal. If you are driving in a straight line with no differential in wheel speed, you come of the power and are hearing and noise this would suggest excessive backlash of the crownwheel and pinion.
