Good info on the difference between an EMP and a CME or solar storm. What many people do not know is that earth's magnetic poles are shifting and will eventually swap places. As they shift, earth's protective magnetic shield is shifting and weakening allowing much weaker CME's to have a greater effect on earth. Witness, the much stronger Aurora's we've seen in the last year caused by much weaker solar storms. It is also thought to have a great impact on our changing climate. Something to be aware of.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Dr. Bradley! I've learned something new today. It's nice to know that another Carrington Event type of CME would still wreck our power grid like it played havoc on telegraph lines back in 1859, but won't necessarily wreck all of the electronics we rely on today. I had no idea and that completely changes how one could try to defend against and mitigate the effects.

There is still a debate on whether an EMP or CME would effect a solar panel. Some experts says yes it could destroy the diodes others say it wont effect the Solar panel at all. Currently I put the diodes back in my panels and using them but i bought some extras just in case.

Mr: Bradley I have a question about your T R.A.P device. If hooked up to a Lithium batt or a LIFEPO4 BATT to the POS and Neg terminals will it protect it against both Radiant and Transident forms of energy, because in a lithium batt or a LIFEPO4 BATT is a BMS that's basically a digital logic or circuut board regulating power flow into and out of the battery. Without this working logic circuit you have a very expensive paper weight. Thank you

I'm wondering, just a question. If a person could hook a ground cable with larger wire to the negative wire on a car if that might help if an EMP did happen? It would be the same thing as a house being grounded by a grounding rod, just hook a car battery to its own grounding rod. It might be a main to hook up but might save the car. Anyone have any ideas about that? Thanks.

Will whole house surge suppressor protect everything on the circuits downstream of the surge suppressor from the E3 of a CME? Or if we get warning that E3 event from CME is building, can we just unplug our appliances until it is past?
@chrissnyder8108
@chrissnyder8108 Ай бұрын
Yes. Though maybe wait till closer to projected peak of CME, as CME can last time periods on scale of days, not just hours. How long is the food in your unplugged refrigerator or freezer good for, even if you remember to keep the door closed? How long will your laptop run on its battery before needing recharging? Use of a surge protector like a power strip can handle minor power fluctuations like the grid experiences in normal times, but they aren't designed for big CMEs, but they could help during the run up to the peak of a CME event, to ease concerns of time unplugged for your appliances.

@daval5563

Sounding like the Cult of Ben here, ... just saying. And according to the Cult, we're facing an "induction" event. Imagine, metals getting hot enough to melt on the spot. There's a good chance every "wired" home in the world would become a torch as the wires got hot enough to melt the plastic coating and set it afire. *POOF* So much for prepping eh? And before any of that happens, .. "if" the sun even farts in our general direction with our weakening Magnetosphere, it will destroy the grid and cause fires as well. Maybe not in every home, but I'm sure the conditions are there. The Carrington event set telegraph poles and stations afire didn't it? And that was when we had a good force field going. Imagine today's conditions. And good luck.

The CME can send thousands of volts and large currents into the grid even after the grid shuts off. A large high voltage disconnect is needed on every building. These are outrageously expensive. Is there a cheap way to accomplish this to keep my house wiring from burning up?

For CME Even if there was no warning, you can infer the onset by coordinated lack of comms from all sun watching equipment and aurora at low latitudes, and I think you would also get much clearer shortwave radio signals from further away. Strong aurora at low latitudes is the biggest signal in the absence or blackout of warning imo. As for EMP, none.
@GwladYrHaf

@@christyeichhorn5333 the most important thing is to not be fearful, then calmly start to know all your local water sources, start leaning about foraging or at least buy a good field guide book ( hardcopy) , and develop some skills in living without electronic tech. Can you keep warm? Cool? Hydrated? Fed? Safe? Know your good neighbours. etc. Basically the sort of stuff previous generations knew how to do, nothing weird, just the normal knowledge all our ancestors had about living on this planet.

I think the US government did just warn us of increased solar sunspot activity and possible CMEs, and to look for auroras at night from that activity, and judging by the films I've seen of the auroras over my area, it looks like we may already have had a CME flow by Earth. So I think CME warnings are common because far less harm is caused by them and simple precautions like unplugging appliances for few hours or days can offer complete protection of home appliances/ electronics. But I'm not sure we'd get any warning of a nuclear EMP, because that would probably be a stealth strike by enemies, and if gov't had any advance hints they would be afraid of causing panic in population, besides few people would have knowledge and means of shielding their devices from an EMP anyways. I took notice of solar activity causing auroras as a CME warning and carefully soft ejected my backup drive from my computer and slipped it into a faraday shield until aurora activity was past, just in case there were unexpected effects on electronics, I could be sure that my business data would survive. But my computer was plugged into the grid through the same time period, and it had no problems, so my precaution was not necessary.
@chrissnyder8108
@chrissnyder8108 Ай бұрын
@@christyeichhorn5333 for solar CMEs there is little need for fear, there is little chance of harm coming to your personal electronics or home appliances. Electronics like your phone or watch that are not plugged into the electric grid are completely safe during a CME, and even appliances that stay plugged into your electrical (grid) outlets in your home, like your refrigerator are rarely going to suffer any harm. If you are worried about them, putting a surge suppressor between those appliances and the electrical outlet can give you additional protection for them (most new power strips have surge suppressors built in). You should definitely have your personal electronics with data storage on a surge suppressor, not so much because they at more risk of CME, but also because they could suffer from the typical surges or brown outs that are common in grid power, even if they have a built-in battery that supplies backup power. For my laptop, I unplug the power cord during electrical storms passing over, and doing that through the peak of a CME may be a good idea, though they can last days, not just hours, so unless you aren't using the laptop at all during a CME, you will probably need to plug it in and recharge it during a portion of the CME. I think the US government did just warn us of increased solar sunspot activity and possible CMEs, and to look for auroras at night from that activity, and judging by the films I've seen of the auroras over my area, it looks like we may already have had a CME flow by Earth. So I think CME warnings are common because far less harm is caused by them and simple precautions like unplugging appliances for few hours or days can offer complete protection of home appliances/ electronics, and we can expect more CME warnings this year of peak solar activity. Would electronic watches be affected? Phones? (the phone itself, not the external infrastructure)
@chrissnyder8108
@chrissnyder8108 Ай бұрын
It seems he is saying natural CME from the sun would not affect wearable tech (watch or phone) that isn't plugged in to the electrical grid, though it might do damage to things that stay plugged into the grid all the time, like home appliances or a home computer (I'm not clear whether our optional whole house surge suppressor we installed in our new home will protect our home appliances from a CME). An EMP from a nuclear strike at high altitude would fry all electronics that are not disconnected from the grid and stored in Faraday cage shielding that is grounded to earth to dissipate the charges. Critical infrastructure providers may be able to get themselves going again after an EMP if they have spare electronics stored in Faraday cages against such a nuclear EMP, but few businesses or institutions have done such costly duplication measures; certainly public utility grids in the USA are not required to do so, though maybe Pentagon has made such preparations at some of its critical facilities.

What happens to the nuclear reactors if an EMP goes off?
@chrissnyder8108
@chrissnyder8108 Ай бұрын
I don't know how much shielding or duplication of critical electronics operators of nuclear power plants in the USA (much less any other nation) are required to do, but there are ways to shield electronics from an EMP; electronics that are off and completely enclosed in a Faraday shield that is grounded will still be in working order after an EMP, but electronics that are on and connected to wiring that goes outside of a faraday shield could still get fried, which is most of all electronics in operation today. So if a nuclear powerplant had electronics get fried by an EMP but they had foresight to have all electronic or electric components of their critical cooling systems duplicated and safely stored on site in a grounded faraday cage, the engineers could possibly get the damaged components removed and replaced with the spare ones that were shielded during the EMP and manage to use the nuclear power electricity to get the repaired cooling system restoring the fuel rods to their cooled state and avoid a nuclear meltdown or release incident.

Could you comment on the thing being sold all over the internet and YT called "EMP Shield?" I'm 99% sure it's snake oil. I don't see how it can do all that claim and am very skeptical. They have all sorts of testing, but when I read the warranty it said it was only warranted against lightening strikes. But on the website they "guarantee" it'll protect against an EMP/CME. MY BS meter is in the red on this company. You have a degree and good testing equipment, but they claim their device is rated to various govt. standards and "passed all the tests." You would be doing the prepper, and population in general, a great service if you could test and comment on that thing. Personally I think it's just a surge protector, but they cover it up and hide what is in the box. So who knows what's in there. Thank you!

In the case of CME, you can do the same thing you might do for an electrical storm passing over you, have a power strip with a surge suppressor for plugging in any sensitive electronics with data to protect against minor fluctuations in grid electricity, and if storm or CME is rolling through, you can go a step further and unplug the power cord from your laptop or if it is a desktop, shut the computer down first, and then unplug it through the worst of the storm. As long as your watch or phone are not plugged in or charging during a CME, they will be safe from any damage the electrical grid could suffer.
