I bought my 2017 iMac 27" in 2018. I have always loved it. I use it for work every day. I did upgrade the ram to 40gb and I replaced the hybrid drive with an Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB drive. The upgrade did help for larger files but it didnt make a huge difference, just better than it was. I do have an external 8TB drive for extra storage because I like to save my movie DVD/Bluray collection to a HD. My iMac is currently running Ventura 13.2 with no issues. I use my iMac wirelessly and Remote Desktop to several other computers wireless when I"m working and I never have had any issues. Before I bought this iMac I was constantly on my 2014 MacBook Pro for personal use. I still use my 2014 MacBook Pro when I want a laptop but the iMac is my favorite place to work and relax. The 27" screen is awesome. Also I used to be only a Windows guy....but once I started using the MacBook Pro and the iMac my Dell computer does not get used anymore. I still remote to windows pc's for work. The iMac just gives me the best experience.

Thanks for sharing. That sounds like all the reasons I love my 2017 27" iMac. Once you just use it with the screen it's hard to go back to anything else and they are fast enough for almost every task unless you are doing 10 Bit 4K edits on a daily basis.

Thanks to your advice I just bought a 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, Radeon Pro 580 8 GB, 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, 2TB which was in immaculate condition. I bought from a professional photographer who needed to upgrade due to the software he uses not working on Ventura. He upgraded the specs on this iMac from new as well. I installed Sonoma this morning which took about an hour to complete all the tasks that need doing to install it. I paid £500 for it and I think it's a bargain. iMac is super fast.

The SSD you showed in the video is the Worse SSD you can get for this system. Hi Craig, I love your videos, Thanks for sharing this! I have also mine Imac 2017 5k, 3.4 GHz with 40gb ram and Radeon Pro 570 4 GB. I am planning to upgrade the fusion drive to SSD. I already bought a kingstone KC 600 SSD, 1TB with 15x faster. here's my question? is it better to use an external SSD as a bootable drive with new Mac OS and work there for graphic design? or change the Fusion Drive to SSD as an internal drive? which one is better? I worked as motion graphic designer and I'm using adobe apps, especially After Effects. I'm also hesitant to update my OS coz it might be getting slow that's why I'm still using old version MacOS Catalina. if I upgrade my RAM to 64gb and SSD with a new MacOS is it slightly faster? especially when I use it for video editing and graphic designing? thank you!
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. It's always better to have the SSD installed internally (some overhead with an external enclosure), but with that said it's risky in some cases. You need to take the screen off and feel confident that you can mount the drive correctly etc. It's not hard but anything can happen when you root around in the Mac. So booting off an external SSD is a good way to get a speed increase without those risks. But, is one better than the other, it depends on your own risk level and what you want to do. The internal SSD will be a bit faster with everything else the same. I run my 2017 off an external SSD and have done that for 5 years with no issues. My SSD is a simple Samsung 2.5" 500 MB/s SSD and it works pretty good. The external SSD (booting off it) is a very easy thing to do so you can try that first and if you need it faster install internally. There is some overhead with the external SSD as stated above.

This video is tailor made for me. I inherited a brand new (never turned on) 2017 27” with 4.2 i7 w/ 3TB Fus. Only 8G, but also received a 32GB Crucial kit. Hey Craig! Love the video! but I have a specific question: Does this work well with premiere pro? (1080p and special effects) I have a Mac mini 2014, and its beginning to let me down... English is not my first language.
@craigneidel
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I don't use Premier Pro so I can't answer that. I'm guessing it will work better with iMovie or FCP since they are optimized for Apple systems. If you do a bunch of editing work you might look at something like an M1 iMac or the new Mac mini M2 for $599 if you have a monitor. The 2017 is a great system but if you are doing a ton of work you might want to go with a slightly newer system - even the 2020 27". Thanks for watching.

as long as you are booting off the flash SSD then you should be fine. If you are booting off the SATA then the system will really slow down.

Can I connect iMac 5K 2017 to my macbook m1pro as second display?
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 10 ай бұрын
Not really unless you use something like Luna Display. It's not perfect but using something like Luna Display you can use it as a second display. I might do a video on that in the future.

Thank you for your answer. Is Luna Display enough for video editing? Is it work via the internet or via Thunderbol?
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 10 ай бұрын
Luna can work using a Ethernet cable, wireless, or I think they just added usb-C. I will be testing it in the next month I think (maybe 1.5 months) to see just that. I know it will have about 8 MS latency or could be more or less but I'm not sure yet if it would be a great editing machine or not. I know it's great as just a second screen without tons of high end work but hopefully I can try that out.

The 2020 is a good deal if you can get it for the right price. I have seen those for around $999 at times on sale but I would not spend $1,800 for one. It will come down to price/performance etc. The safe bet is the M1 but the 2020 27" iMacs will still be good for a number of years and then you can sell them and get some money back. But it's really up the the individual for sure.

I have a 2017 iMac with 1TB SSD and 40GB of ram. Zero chance I'm "upgrading" to a 2023 iMac that maxes out at 24GB ram (that you must buy from Apple at it's crazy memory prices and can't increase memory amount after purchase) and comes with a 24-inch screen. F.O. Apple!

@craigneidel
@craigneidel 8 ай бұрын
Yes, if you can get a good deal then the 2019 and 2020 iMacs would be better for sure. Make sure it is a 27" (not the 21.5") since you can easily add ram to the 27" and load it up. You also can run a newer OS with the 2020 for a few more years so if you find a good deal on a 2020 that is the one to get. The video is just about the 2017 but I would get the 2020 over that.

Hi Craig! Not sure where to ask you this, but I thought I would weigh in with my Q here: (Heart) your channel, esp when you give love to older Apple devices (aka, the ones I can afford ). But there is something about Le Apple I have wondered about for years: No company, outside of maybe the Office of the President U.S., Inc. is the beneficiary/victim of leaks more than Apple. Here's the question: Is Apple in on it? Do they secretly welcome, even plant rumors cause it keeps their name/brand top of line? Remember that dude who years ago left behind an iPhone prototype at a Starbucks (was it the 5?). Normally you'd think he would be fired ASAP, but the conspiracy-minded might believe he was promoted after that stunt.
@craigneidel
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
They might but not sure because Apple does like to keep things locked down and have strict penalties if you get caught. I think it's just hard to keep this under wraps when people are most likely paying Apple employees for the info (just an opinion). Thanks for watching.
