Mercedes-Benz is perhaps the biggest name in luxury cars globally, and for countless buyers around the world, it is a car brand to aspire to own. The German automaker has a reputation for superb build quality, excellent engineering, and the bragging rights that its founder Carl Benz invented the first production automobile.
Today, Mercedes-Benz faces a new class of challenges as Tesla has become the aspirational brand for younger consumers. There is a slew of other EV hopefuls vying for the next generation’s aspirational vehicle’s mantle. Automakers have had to sink billions into new technologies and contend with a new crop of competitors in the critical Chinese market and around the world.

This is a misleading title. The content was more about how Mercedes could lose its strategic advantage in the market, it was not really about how Benz is losing its prestige image.

Mercedes-Benz is not so prestigious in Europe as it is outside of Europe; in fact, Mercedes-Benz taxis are very common, especially in Germany. MB has lost its way though, due largely because of corporate executives who are more interested in the bottom line, and don’t necessarily care about quality control or consumer interests.

Yes taxis are commonly MB in Germany but they still are seen as one of the most prestige cars to drive and still turns heads when you see a c63 or s63 etc. MB definitely is still highly rated in Europe and counts to one of the prestigious car brands

Don't get me wrong, they are money pits. But most people who get a modern German car drive them hard and do not maintenance. Yes, a Toyota or lexus will be 100x more reliable on the engineering, but I have worked on my 2012 boxster (6 speed manual, the PDK will break) for the better part of 160k miles and it's running smooth as ever. Regular oil changes, drive slow over bumps (don't break the suspension) and use the right gasoline. But most importantly, don't abuse the car all the time. That said, the German turbo engines are just flawed. Direct injection clogs the valves, poor machining of the valve train, excessive heat and poor quality metalwork does plague the newer engines. Only Toyota and Honda seem to be able to build a high compression, high rpm engine that lasts.

I'm glad that so many watchers have made that observation. The title of the video consists of two claims: 1. Mercedes is losing its prestige, 2. We will present to you on the video how it's happening. Neither is true. There's a section on the video about Mercedes having quality problems starting in the 90's, and continuing from there for some time, but according to the video that problem was rectified quite a long time ago. Unfortunately I have to give a down-vote for the video. Titles are important, because they affect strongly on how people interpret the content. If the title and the content contradict each other, most of the time people absorb what the title says.

My experience with a benz was a five year old c300 I owned years ago with about 60k miles where the engine mounts needed replacing and it also had a bit of oil leaks and the guy at the dealer tells me that these are “not so uncommon issues” with benz even as early as around 40k miles. A week later I sold that car and have owned lexus and acuras since then and have never had any major issues. I dont mind paying a bit more for a ‘luxury’ brand, but a relatively expensive brand that isn’t reliable? That’s were I just rather not venture… just my experience and have never gone back to the brand even after rising the corporate ladder where I can now afford nicer cars. Do right by your customers and as they grow financially they will stick with you into the more expensive models, but burn them in the entry models and they never come back…

If I'm buying an MB I expect it not to be filled with plastic hoses that break due to heating/cooling cycles. I expect it not to develop oil leaks and suspension failures just because "it's an MB". MB consistently wins on styling and comfort, but that's not enough to keep a customer nowadays. Hopefully their new EVs will bring back the brand's pre-model-year-2000 reputation again!

I remember an Australian Mercedes advertisement. It had the camera slowly panning from back to front along a 300SD, which had been in a major accident. The voice over discussed how the car secured its occupants using various then-new features. The video ended by showing the family who was in the car looking healthy. It was a great ad. I still want a late '80s SL.

Owning Mercedes from '80s, most notably 123 and 124 was like investment. It was like buying a house - it was expensive, but it would last you a lifetime. They were cheap and easy to maintain, and longevity was very good. In that sense, Mercedes brand had no problem showing that it produces truck, dumpsters or even more agricultural Unimog - unthinkable in US today. I have a family friend that worked in Mercedes repair centre in Frankfurt, and he could talk for hours how much effort it took to properly paint the car.

My parents were so proud to buy their first Mercedes Benz when they finally retired. It was an endless money pit. It was at the repair shop countless times. Sooo many trouble with the transmission (autotronic), the AC not working when it was raining, the sunroof kept dying, other problems with the electronics… My parents aren’t rich so it was really sad to see them struggle with such a horrible but expensive car. My mother actually cried a little when they finally decided that enough was enough and that they would sell it. But they’re now driving a Toyota Corolla Hybrid for a couple of years and they never had a single issue. And a 10 year warranty. My mother is so thankful that it always just works. Very low maintenance costs. It may be ugly and boring compared to a Mercedes but it’s very fuel efficient, very safe and extremely reliable. So no more Mercedes Benzes will ever be purchased in my family.

I bought my first Mercedes, a 300D in 1984. It was $32,000 new in the US at that time. The car was indestructible until I got hit by a driver who ran a stop sign. I was disappointed that the insurance totaled it and I got $7500 for it even though it had 240,000 miles. In the folowing 39 years I owned a 1987 300E, a 1988 300E, and a 1990 300CE. Folowed by a 1998 E320, a 2000E430, and a have 2001 E430 Sport. I still own my classic coupe 300CE and both E430's. The $32,000 cost of the 1984 300D would be $93,000 in 2023 because of inflation. But a 2023 E300 starts at "only" $59,000. So there is $30,000 in quality missing. The newer cars are full of elctronics and techonlogy that breaks. Nothing broke on my old 300D. Those cars were built to last up to 1 million miles. Today, Mercedes is more like Toyota or Hyundai, built for the 3 year lease, after which all the problems come. My 2001 E430 Sport is 22 years old but looks better, has high quality leather, and a bulletproof V8 that is more reliable than any new MB. It isfast and handles like a sports car. It only has 97,000 miles on it so I have no plans of buying a new Mercedes.

Because American car manufacturers have had the Jeremy Clarkson philosophy on making cars since the 80s : MORE POWER. They put more money into making a powerful engine rather than focus on inside luxury amenities. It's gotten a lot better now, but it was especially apparent in the 2000's. Also the american business climate has been more inclined to cut costs at any means necessary in order to hit quarterly goals; compared to the European business model which tends to lean more towards investing in long term growth rather than making as much money as fast as possible.

Actually, the 220Sb could have cost a mint to repair, had I taken it to my local M-B dealer. Some time after I got it, the rear bearing in the generator failed, mostly because I didn't know it had an oil cup. A new generator was available through the dealer, priced at $712 (around $1200 today), plus about $150 to bolt on and connect the leads. I got a generator off a wrecked Porsche 911 for $50, refurbished it and kept the car another four years.

The problem with luxury cars now is that manufacturers are targeting middle class buyers instead rich buyers who can buy these vehicles in cash. Back in the day you wouldn't ask someone what their car note was because most people that bought a Mercedes paid for it up front. This meant that Mercedes could build a car without worrying the cost of materials and mark up the car. This led to reliable vehicles. Now days everything is cutting corners to make sure the car is in a certain price bracket based on the class of the vehicle.

@@lucidky4345 What he said is still true. Mercedes started offering Honda Civic type vehicles at lower prices. This does nothing but water down the brand and those looking for status no longer are exclusive. So they move on to the brand that is out of reach for the masses and leaves Mercedes now having to continue to target the lower income audience. It's the beginning of the end for the brand as it was known.

That’s a bs excuse for poor reliability given a cheap Toyota will easily outlast it, a car doesn’t need to cost a lot to be reliable. And you can’t argue it’s because a non luxury Toyota is simpler, when a highly complex Lexus LS is also just as reliable. It’s nothing to do with cost or complexity but the attitude of the brand, when it comes to reliability.

Very easy when "180" bargain basement models exist and destroyed the C & D segments for many brands. A reason why many Japanese gave up in Europe, when locals would rather buy poverty spec A180/C180, A2/A3/A4, or 118i/318i over a rebadged Acura (Accord), Lexus IS, or Nissan Primera/Infiniti G37/Q50 2.2d/3.5h. Even for more basic Japanese brands, that was the case. Lower margin, cheap German brand vehicles ate into Japanese market share.

My gripe with the German top 3 is that they never gave a warranty to back up their "German engineering" sales pitch. Their servicing/repairs are too expensive which leads owners to seek so called "mechanics" to fix their cars which results in ruining the car for the next owners and it gets worse from owner to owner. Also from my own experience, the servicing departments won't fix the issue if it's too involved and see you out, you only have to look at the multitude of KZfaqrs showing how difficult it is to trace some engine faults, it's enough to give you nightmares. Yes their cars are great to drive but at a high cost.

I loved Mercedes until around 2000. It was then that my cars began to require repairs that took weeks to resolve. I got fed up with the constant return trips to the dealership as their service department bungled their way to a proper diagnosis and resolution. I lost all confidence in the cars, especially when a couple road trips were ruined by breakdowns. Matters were further worsened by the haughty attitude of Mercedes personnel, who often acted like I was stupid for not understanding the “complexity” of their vehicles.
