Bargain e-commerce company Temu has had a whirlwind 2023.
Quietly launching its app in September 2022, it only took the company a few weeks to top app store charts, edging out Amazon, Walmart and even fast-fashion brand Shein. By February 2023, the 5-month-old company made its TV debut during Super Bowl LVII, airing two commercial spots totaling an estimated $14 million. With an annual advertising budget of about $1.4 billion, Temu is focused on aggregating a user base of nearly 100 million people by year-end.
Temu's popularity is largely due to its ultra-cheap knockoffs. Users can get an Apple Watch dupe for $10, Yeezy knockoffs for $4.99 and gaming consoles for $20. On top of the steep discounts, users are bombarded by coupons, free shipping countdowns, flash sales and discount wheels.
While on its face the company looks to be a Boston-based startup, it is actually backed by a well-known name in the Chinese retail space, Pinduoduo.
"China is really the linchpin in Temu's strategy," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. "A lot of the products that are sold on Temu are manufactured in China. They're shipped directly from China to the U.S. So those labor costs compared to manufacturing in the U.S. and elsewhere are really low."
Temu's rise in popularity has also courted scrutiny from the U.S. government, accusing the website of exploiting de minimis shipping rules to undercut U.S. retailers. Under de minimis rules, shipments valued under $800 are not subject to duty taxes and undergo minimal customs checks.
Beyond that, a U.S. House committee accused the retailer of violating U.S. import law by using forced labor to supply its products.
Temu and Pinduoduo did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.
Watch the video above to learn what's behind Temu's success and what could disrupt the retailer's massive growth in the U.S.

Temu is owned by PDD Holdings, a company founded in China that has been credibly accused by members of Congress as being linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Congressional investigators also believe Temu is illegally selling products made by forced labor in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide against the Uyghur people. Uyghur peoples who are imprisoned and enslaved in concentration camps are being forced to create much of Temu’s goods.

The fact that China can produce an actually functioning smart watch for less than 10$ is absolutely insane. That's the price of a handheld toy, not something with a microprocessor inside it. It could be the worst smartwatch ever. But for 10$? It's a tech marvel.

What you are seeing is the west being intimidated by Chinese tech. "It's trash, that's why it's so cheap so don't buy" Meanwhile we continue to buy overpriced stuff from Amazon that breaks in 2 months....but it's Amazon so no one bats an eye. Just buy another one. If I can buy a $300 smartwatch and you can't then I look better than you but if you can now buy one for $10 and it does half of what mine does, now I'm not so special am I?

If an American company did this, they would be on tv saying: “we optimized our operations to maximize shareholder value and believe that small government and fewer regulatory hurdles are the key enablers for value creation. Our mission is to bring the lowest prices to the consumer market place. Tariffs create an unnecessary hurdle that presents friction for the consumer and we strategically have bypass this and return value to our clients in the form of savings.”😂

It’s interesting how the government keeps saying companies like shein and temu have an unfair advantage over other COMPANIES by shipping things under 800$ to avoid paying tariffs BUT they don’t say that it’s the CONSUMERS who benefit from this since these companies are able to make things more affordable for the everyday people, WHILE abiding by the law. If the government has problem with this, then hey just lower the cutoff! They write the game rules anyways. It’s very easy to see whose interests they have in mind 😃😃

$26 to produce each unit but the cost of Research and Development is where the price tag is. Engineers work for years tinkering with hardware to make smaller, thinner, faster chips. They make up this huge cost with the Apple price tag. China reverse-engineers the stuff and produces knockoffs. They don’t have to spend money on R&D.

When I first started my wholesale business in the US, my import used to be less than $800 per shipment. But after doing my math, I would have a unit cost of at least double than if I had imported a larger shipment. Which only makes sense because the larger your shipment, your unit cost goes down. This use to be a competitive advantage that US based sellers have against foreign sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay. Now, I'm seeing warehousing/fulfillment companies offering storage space for bulk imports from manufacturers from China so that Chinese sellers/manufacturers can now ship directly to American buyers and compete directly with American sellers.

I think a lot of this push back is, in the back of their minds, politicians know we have a competitive problem and use alternative narratives to avoid just acknowledging that AS the root of the problem. Back in the 50's, Japan had a reputation for shoddy goods. They improved quality and offered better prices. Even in the 70's, Japanese cars were not the thing they are now. In the 80's you got that Gung Ho movie (with Micheal Keaton in it, a 'pop' reaction) as we struggled this with what's an identity crisis in where the U.S. stands in manufacturing. The torch is passing still and will continue. I expect India will be the next push-back as they are a rising technological power as well. What's ironic is a LOT of what we've preached to these countries regarding manufacturing that's made them so competitive are things we've failed to follow through on ourselves (complacency).

The U.S. NEVER mentioned anything about the EXTREMELY HIGH profits made by the American importers, wholesalers, and retailers through global sourcing. Temu's advantage doesn't rely on labor cost or tariff, which won't make that much difference from other type of international trading. The real savings come from somewhere in-between. For instance, a shoe at FOB $3.00 turns out to be $9.99 on the shoe racks of discount stores, or even $15.00 in the department store. Where did that $6.99/$12.00 go ? The retailer's cost is usually only half of the selling price. In-between, the additional charge goes to American importers and wholesalers. China has only earned the smallest fraction of the whole chain, as the Amercian buyers are over-too-good at "killing" the price. It is the U.S. importers, wholesalers, and retailers who have grown their EXTREMELY HIGH profits ever since outsourcing in China. As people of God, it's really a shame for being a burglar while pointing China as a thief.

If they comply the Chinese government's rules like Chinese companies do ,then they can operate in China, but probably lose international markets and face huge backlash from their own governments . its pretty genius for tiktok and temu set up two versions for each markets .

I bought some household items like a wheeled storage bin and a dishsoap pump dispenser. Packaging was awful I was surprised the items were not damaged, but, I am very happy with my purchase and the dispenser was cheaper and better quality than what I could pick up at Walmart or TJ Maxx. Will probably buy more of the same because of those reasons. No I wouldn't buy clothing or electronics from Temu, but plastic household items, absolutely.

If you buy from a famous u.s brand i doubt they will ruin there brand by using toxic chemicals atleast your getting something somewhat safe or can even sue the company if they use illegal chemicals to make it.

Critics like to say Temu products are cheap because they are low quality, and a lot probably are. But what they don't want to admit is that many of the products on Temu have no equivalent versions ANYWHERE ELSE in the US. I go to Temu for the unique and creative selection, not the price which will probably rise higher after the teaser stage.

Exactly. The good times and cheap prices arent going to last forever so Im stocking up on the essentials that I know Im going to need down the road like; party/cake decorations, gardening supplies, first aid equipment (splints, etc.) and so on because I refuse to be gouged by local corporations.

In actual capitalism, a price point is a reliable narrator of the item's worth. Not so in petrodollar fantasy lands, where everyone wants "a bargain": free lunch. Essentially legal loopholes to allow stealing when others pay the price. And have the backbone to cry that it's jsut "fair" to get the "market" price in their fixed gamble market. Exploitation yesterday justifies the same range of prices today, and forever.

@@sboinkthelegday3892 Have you ever been on Temu, 🤡? Just like a grocery store chain, some items are cheap and others are not to offset the cost of selling those cheaper items. Its up to the consumer to be savy and decide what best to spend their money on. Clothes for me on Temu is hit or miss, but for house stuff, they are great because they have items Ive never seen on sale in my city. I like the variety in their storage items. I live in an apartment so that comes handy. You dont like it, dont shop there. End of problem.

We're over-vilanising Shein or Temu, but in France, when I need a kitchen accessory or a bathroom organizer, I won't necessarily go to Ikea or local supermarket and pay 30€ or so, for an acrylic or "bamboo" organizer, when I can get the very same thing for 10€ or less from Asian e-commerce. Whatever you can get in UE, it's made in China but eventually assembled in the Netherlands... The quality is the same, but the price is more pocket friendly, especially in the recession. As for the quality, let's just say that everything will break if you don't take care of it or if it's made to be repurchased. And also what you can find on Amazon for 26€, you'll find for 6€ on Shein, sooooo.....

This video forgot to mention that Temu, like the rest of Chinese marketplaces, leverages subsidized UPU postage rates (40-70% lower than regular rates) for underdeveloped countries (isn't it ironic that in order to get subsidized shipping the second economy of the world claims to be underdeveloped?)which is why shipping from China is dirt cheap but if a dissatisfied customer wants to return the products to China then they would need to pay the full international shipping price as US is a d developed country and doesn't get subsidized shipping.
