Jason Thomas, head of global research and investment strategy at Carlyle, says "when you look at valuations, whether you're comparing that to the United States or comparing it to India, which of course is an alternative for many investors, it looks as though China is about 40% cheaper on average."

India is the graveyard of foreign long term investment. That is why most foreign hot money flooded to India Stock Market for the fleecing and speculation. There is very little money invested in building factories. People need to understand. While the Indian federal government might be interested in attracting foreign investments to help develop their infrastructure and manufacturing ecosystem, the powerful local governments and local enterprises are HOSTILE to foreign investment and factories. Within years, Indians will force the foreign owners to sell their investments to local companies. They will use "retroactive" laws or just outright re-interpretation of minute laws to force you to sell. GM, Ford, Coca Cola, Walmart, Winstron (an Apple components supplier) and Xiaomi (Chinese company that invested in India very early) are all fallen victim to India's swiftly changing policies.

Yeah, but they know that these things are causing them problems -- and they're now ripe for some key systemic reforms. Their national govt is expected to be re-elected in a landslide, mainly because it's seen as a reformist-minded govt with an actual track record of change. They haven't yet gotten around to addressing the problems you've mentioned, but are likely to start grappling with these problems in their next term in office which starts next month. As for owning factories, contract manufacturing is less likely to experience the vulnerabilities you mention. As the guest said, flex-sourcing is a new reality and India will be yet another option in the wider menu of choices.

@@manofsan I hope so. But I doubt it will change. It is good to keep a positive expectation. Just be mindful that it is your 401K money that is taking a risk. It might be a good risk. The CEOs and money managers in the West need to think it through. I expect that Western companies will invest some money in India long term. But that money won't be too much. If there is trouble, they will just drop everything and leave. That is how Tata gets to buy out many American companies very cheap.

In China, they are very concern about the profitability of foreign investments. Take Tesla for example, realizing it might be losing out on the EV car price war in China, prime minister Li Qiang invited him to China, lifted the full self-driving restriction on Tesla cars, and allowing Tesla to have a breath of life. Microsoft, Intel, KFC, Walmart, and many other American companies make huge sales in China. The America's Foreign Affiliate Assets in China makes over $400B annually. THAT IS YOUR 401 IN ACTION! People just don't understand how critical Chinese market is for America. They keep looking at the "import and export" balance sheet, and they don't know that American companies make a lot of money (the Chinese government is helping them) in China. Chinese local governments welcome American investment because it is good for their local economy and their job promotions. The hyper aggressive Chinese enterprises help too as the government won't worry too much that American companies will dominate. This is very different from India, where local governments, which is controlled by local landlords and local enterprises, are very HOSTILE to foreign companies. And the weak central government, a wishy washy one to add, does not help. The federal government will sweet talk foreign investors to India. And they will get stuck and get cleansed before they can leave. Honey trap. Graveyard.

"China is about 40% cheaper on average." And there is a reason why that is the case. India is deemed ... far less toxic.
