In my opinion as a German, I would consider the time with Merkel as a time of stability.

Merkel did not enact same sex marriage. She publicly said many times she is against it and was one of the main reasons, it got enacted so late even though most Germans had been in support of same sex marriage for a long time. So, instead you should say it got enacted *despite* Merkel, because more progressive parties kept pushing for it.

Here we have a woman who is from a "conservative party" which actually applies liberal views and laws to their people, and has a progressive agenda encouraging green energy economy. A woman who speaks Russian, but is one of the most important US ally. A woman who has "christian views", yet do not discriminate immigrants, nor sexual orientation. This is an honest opinion. Angela Markle is a graduate and a believer of Christian religion. Apart from her religious believe, she is a person who has morals and ethics as a person followed by strategy to rule a country. Not everyone can rule a country consistently year after year. In Germany in the general election the chancellor is not voted directly by the people but the Parliament is voted. Then a government is formed. The chancellor candidate is decided by each party in advance and is then voted by the parliament. Merkel did not enact same sex marriage. It was a vote by the Parliament and she voted against it. It is also a bit weird to say West Germany was with "the rest of Europe" when half of Europe was with UDSSR.
