The amount of do-gooders in the comments is hilarious. if you guys see this, you're doing great. Stay humble and keep learning the way you are, if that means something breaks or you have to redo something... that just means you've had another opportunity to improve hand skills. it's a win-win doing what you are doing. Bless.

When you model square plates, a good practice is to constrain the center point vertically and horizontally to the center of your horizontal and vertical sketch lines. This will allow you to constrain using center planes later on in your assemblies. Love the videos, guys. Thanks for all the inspiring, hard work you guys do!

I'm guessing the bearings are designed to take an axial load, seeing as they're being used in a mill, so this probably wouldn't damage them too much!
@climberjb
@climberjb 4 жыл бұрын
"Angular contact ball bearings have inner and outer ring raceways that are displaced relative to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. This means that these bearings are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads"
@forgeperformanceand4x4
@forgeperformanceand4x4 4 жыл бұрын
@@climberjb not a matter of damaging too much it's a matter of the wrong practice being used. The forces while pressing are huge and could be compared to a full crash that will often bruse the bearings requiring replacement.
@evildrome
@evildrome 4 жыл бұрын
That's not the worst of it. Just horsing them in at any old angle will be the death of them well before lightly bruised balls. If you need to use force to put it in, you'll kill it by not putting it in straight. Stuff that should last ten years failing after 6 months. I've seen it! And don't go crying to the dealer when it fails either, cause they'll take one look at the outer ring and send you home with a flea in your ear.

If you want to get as accurate as possible, linear encoders actually make sense. Most super high end machines use both. Glass scales and Rotary encoders with preloaded (around 50 micron per meter) Ballscrews. They then average both readings while taking into account thermal growth elastic deformation etc..

If you have a problem with heat, play with your bearing preload. The idea is to get 0 run out with least amount of pre load. This can be very finicky. I actually install a thermometer right on the spindle to keep an eye on it. 7000rpm at 30 minutes is where mine starts to get to hot on my #g0704.

I also wanted a link to the bearings Angular contact bearings should be inserted in matched pairs butting up against each other. Not sure how that is accomplished when there is only axial room for one bearing at each location. I’m not sure PA monitors these comments as I see many unanswered questions by viewers? I did learn a lot from this site although they get a lot of criticisms for all their very commendable work. So many armchair generals out there. I have a 940 I continue to upgrade at a snails pace with all of my own obstacles. Centroid Acorn and Clearpath. So many other things come up in one’s daily / weekly / monthly / yearly lives that slow progress. The biggest impediment being your job. Work gets in the way off everything ! If you at PA do monitor comments any more , I THANK YOU.

I was very confused when I saw the brazing bit sliced in, but then I realized "oh god they turned the Z axis into a CNC broach...". That is both creative and slightly painful, given that the Z axis isn't meant for huge repetitive linear loads.

There is a whole lot of point using glass scales for feedback because they are measuring post lash actual displacement of the carriage vs your super dooper rotary encoders that are measuring pre lash movement of the motor shaft before it travels through any of that cumulative lash and wear... not so super dooper.

Wouldn't linear encoders be more accurate as they will handle any backlash caused by the screw?
@routercnc9517
@routercnc9517 4 жыл бұрын
Looks like they are using ballscrews not leadscrews. If they are C5 rolled ballscrews there is only 50um of backlash. If they are C7 ground ballscrews there is even less.
@skrubol
@skrubol 4 жыл бұрын
@@routercnc9517 You've got your grades backwards. Lower numbers are tighter tolerance. 50um is a lot of backlash (~.002") That can be compensated, but can really have a negative effect on surface finish and tool life when climb milling.
@routercnc9517
@routercnc9517 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. Ah yes C5 and C7 should be reversed, apologies. I’ve made lots of CNC machines with C7 ballscrews (rolled) and been happy with the finish but I’m only making parts for myself. My latest machine, also C7, has double ballnuts back to back so backlash is practically zero. Finish is better again but the machine is also much stiffer so possibly a combination of effects happening there.

Honest safety question: is sanding like that on the lathe reasonably safe? I'm not trying to be a safety Nazi, I just have seen lots of conflicting opinions on this, ranging from "it's fine if held lightly between two fingers" to "you'll be horrifically murdered by your chuck". Still trying to figure out what my own practices should be. I have so far avoided any sanding on the lathe, but wouldn't mind finding a technique that won't literally kill me.
