I love that colorful stripe. Definitely a happy accident. I feel like anytime I’m creating, and I make a mistake. What I come up with to fix it tends to be my favorite part of the project.

Me too. I really try to intentionally turn them into features instead of flaws.

I always learn something watching your videos. Great tips here for any guitar (or other project for that matter) build. Thanks for sharing!

16:25 The same thing happened to me on my first neck build, right at the headstock, too. I was able to glue the piece back on, but I took that as a reason to get a double-bearing flush trim bit that allows me to flip the workpiece and template upside down when the grain direction demands it.

Half expected your band saw to snap seeing it deflect at high speed 😱

Yea, it looks scary when sped up, eh? That blade is old and dull, needs to go.

@@timswayone guy was gonna sharpen my saw blade cause it was smoking dull. Instead he cleaned at no charge and it cut great again. I believe he soaked it in???ammonia and scrubbed it wth wire brush . saved $

Lovely work. Fretless bass neck would be cool. I guess just epoxy the fret lines?
@timsway
@timsway 6 ай бұрын
If you wanted to make this fretless you could epoxy the fret lines or not cut them at all. Personally, I would not cut the position markers and cut just the lines, shorter but wider, to just serve as visual aides. Like just a 1/2" down from the top, longer for the marked ones, 3,5,7,9,12.

You're missing the 13th fret position marker 🤪

lol. In doing this series, I'm doing things with handhelds and table mount routers I hadn't done in years - and apparently forgot how to! I forgot how much time is spent peeling backs off two sided tape, triple checking cutter depths, sweeping... I was afraid CNC would further remove me from what I love to do, but in fact it does the opposite.

Plastic nails are what some KZfaqrs use to hold wood down.

yes! I use those on my cnc, too. they work great for plywood and soft wood, but tend to not do well with really hard woods, like this maple.

I bug you a lot… because you answer my questions. When you CNC a neck, and when you flip from the back to the front face, do you keep your origin set at the stock material or Change it to the models height??? TIA!
@timsway
@timsway 3 ай бұрын
Personally I set it to the material stock height. So say I begin with a blank that's .75" thick, I need to leave at least some part of the blank that thick to set my depth for each tool change. Using the model height would get risky, I think. Some people always start at the wasteboard height, but then you have to make sure you're set to that in all your gcode instead of material height.

@@timsway Thanks Tim! I am extremely new to cnc and have been experimenting with milling a neck through design this week. To say it has been challenging would be an understatement. I finally got through the adaptive clearing, the parallel, and the contour processes and found that the g code did not take the material on the back of the neck down to the models thickness… My design had the neck around 14-16mm thick and the body portion around 42mm the body portion is nearly dead on, while the neck came out close to 32mm thick… any suggestions on what I did wrong?

What CNC do you have? I have been looking at getting a CNC for awhile, so would like to make it happen… hopefully this year.

I have been searching for anyone that has made a bass or guitar from snowboards. Is that something that can be done?
@timsway
@timsway 6 ай бұрын
I have made them from water skis and snow skis. But old ones, made of wood. Videos on my channel. Snow boards are usually lightweight composites, not wood, etc., lacking the structural integrity. I think what you'd need to do is make a bass that "looks" like a snowboard.
@jamesh5460

I remember the waterski episode and that looked like a fun build. Good point about the snowboards being composites and very "springy". I made a chair out of old skis and snowboards and had to glue and screw a couple together for rigidity. @@timsway
