You know, there was a time when most people knew how to do these same things by hand. Maybe it varied a little from one country to the other, but people knew how to grow their own food, sew their own clothes, build their own furniture, cook well, build ovens, in short, people knew how to care for themselves. In today’s society, though technology has given us many good things, we have lost so many useful skills because of our reliance on modern modes of achieving things. It makes me kind of sad when you think about it, and when you watch videos like hers. Our lives may be “easier”, but something very precious was lost in the name of comfort that we yearn for and this girl gives back to us with her videos.

*Liziqi Weibo Translation:* The entire life of tomatoes, I’ve finished yet another one of these “life of” videos Surprising, the interval between this video and filming wasn’t actually too long I checked the earliest date from my raw footage, And it was actually less than a year; around five months since I first shot it I filmed it around Lunar New Year when the pandemic first began, Because I was at home with nothing to do at the beginning of the year, So I started to propagate all kinds of plants in my yard I got some sandy soil, leafy compost soil from the mountains and organic soil The organic soil is actually better if you get the ones without any grass seeds in it, But I think all of the soil sold out, So I made some myself instead As expected, a ton of grass started to grow out from the soil I would pick them out as I was watering Mix all of the soils together and place them into a seedling tray, I planted a lot of different kinds of tomatoes; Big, small, red, yellow, green, purple; you name it Then, place the seeds into the tray Depending on the type, you put either one or two seeds in each hole Put them through some hot water and then wait for them to sprout in the greenhouse (1) It was super cold back then, so they wouldn’t have sprouted outside If they did, they would’ve frozen to death Wasn’t there a period of time where I stopped posting for a while? (2) I was resting at home, so I ended up doing a ton of small insignificant things At the start, I just wanted to fix the impractical sheepcote (It’s the shack next to the new wall and pond in the video, I made it out of the leftover bricks, and didn’t think to film the process) And then the minute I finished it, I heard that my neighbor was tearing down her chicken shack So I got a ton of wood from her that I could make into straight poles I was really greedy, so I lifted all of the wood she gave me back home I made a lot of racks from them, but I still haven’t used them all to this day There’s a pile of them still sitting in the back of my house The fence is actually pretty easy to make, Just really time-consuming Because the land next to our pond is uneven, Some parts are higher while others are lower So you’ll have to constantly measure the height of the branches As well as where you put them into the fence This way you’ll make sure that the branches are on a straighter line, While placing it on an uneven surface It doesn’t look as ugly this way I remember it took me two entire days just to make the fence, I was planning to grow a circle of flowers and some vegetables around it after I was finished That’s right, I originally only planned to make a fence I never planned to plant the tomatoes on the side of the pond They were going to be planted under my pear trees Only then did I place all my raw footage into a folder I said earlier that the land around my pond was uneven, So I had to find some rocks to surround it evenly 30-40-pound rocks were just enough for it Only smaller rocks look nice when stacked, So the process was a bit troubling If I got the rocks before making the fence, then it would’ve been a lot easier Because I did the opposite, The rocks kept blocking my way as I was moving them So I had to move them around a lot It can’t be helped anyways, It’s not like I wanted to grow flowers or vegetables there or something By the way, don’t try this at home, kids The stones could fall and break your hand There were actually a lot of bloopers that I cut out from the footage Because we filmed the entire process of building the wall, We would sometimes zone out and forget that we were being filmed So there would be a lot of scenes where my butt was facing the camera The sped-up version of these could serve as visual bleach for your eyes After building the fence and rocks, I patched the cracks with mud, and moved some flower sprouts over The peach blossoms bloomed as the weather got warmer And all kinds of plum blossoms started blooming from the trees It’s about time I started moving the tomatoes over. They probably won’t freeze in this weather Transplanting and watering the plants; start to add some fertilizer as the sprouts get bigger It’s pretty dry this year, and since I didn’t dig too deep in the dirt next to the pond, I had to water often Good thing it started to rain more as summer arrived So I could be a bit lazier with my duties Bare branches were dotted with plentiful amounts of peaches Dark empty twigs of plum trees were painted with shades of blonde and green Tomatoes turned from a single seed into vines of colourful appetising fruit An abandoned pond transformed into a garden of flowering splendour The miracles of life are always so touching If you work hard, you’ll most definitely be repaid for your diligence What I can communicate towards the viewer in my videos is limited, Anything beyond what I’ve showed has to be experienced on your own You’ll never get anywhere in your life without hard work Working hard and heading towards your heart’s ambitions; You may not succeed, but it’s at least better than doing nothing ………… See, I suddenly started nagging like a mother for no reason Saying some totally unrelated stuff to the video’s topic Let’s just keep talking about tomatoes A part of the tomatoes was ripe, but the hydrangea ones weren’t yet (3) So I just made a really simple tomato sauce and some Plum Juiced Tomatoes (my new favourite dish) This was because the fence took up so much time, I didn’t want to delay any more of your time in watching the rest of the video Plus I’ve already made a lot of tomato-related foods in the past few years I make tomato sauce every year, A really chunky one Make a tomato sugar water by cutting the fruit in half and boiling them with lots of sugar Cook it for a while, and then add some honey once it’s thickened That’s all there is to “Ruby Tomato Sauce” I made the sauce with both yellow and red tomatoes, but it only looks red after I made it This is because the red pigment of the tomatoes came out when boiling and covered the yellow I was worried that some people might get agitated over this, So here’s a special disclaimer~ I made some fries to match with the sauce There’re still so many potatoes at home… I have to find a way to get rid of them all Cut the potatoes into strips, wash off the starch, then put them through some hot water Place them into cool water, and then fry to your preferred extent I can’t really explain this part Some people like it softer, some like a crispy outside While others like it crunchy all the way through Taste it as you fry it Being happy with your fries is the most important thing As they say, whatever floats your boat (4) The last thing I made with these was a tomato hot pot Rehydrate your peas for a night, And then cook them beforehand Cross cut the tomatoes, and then dice them after you’ve removed the skin from steaming It’s easier to do with a blender if you have one Stir fry geranium, white cardamom, onions, ginger, garlic, and picked ginger at a high temperature to release the fragrance Place in tomatoes to turn it into a tomato-flavoured red oil Add in the precooked peas and continue frying Lastly, add water, salt and a bit of sugar to turn it into a thick tomato soup Prep the other ingredients as you’re making the soup Like the egg dumplings, fish balls, meat balls etc. And then all you’ll need are some fresh vegetables Once the tomato soup is done, Filter out the pieces of tomato and spices And the fragrant thick tomato base is finished! I’m going to go out soon, So the last parts that I wrote in this were pretty rushed We’re going to film the pretty starry sky I feel like the sky tonight will be really beautiful So that’s all from me As always, a simple and crude confession to you guys: Love you all~ XOXO (1) Placing seeds into hot water for a certain amount of time at a certain temperature will shorten germination time by softening the seed coat and adding moisture to the embryo. (2) Around February - April of 2020 (3) They’re called 花绣球番茄 in Chinese and I kid you not, I could not find a English translation to the name. so I just directly translated over the name into hydrangea (花绣球) and tomato (番茄), so they’re called hydrangea tomatoes. (4) 千金难买我乐意 means 'I like it anyways', typically used when the speaker's choice is considered unwise. It means, the most precious thing, impossible to buy even with thousands of gold is are own feelings of enjoyment. I did not want to write this into the English translation because it would be too long, so here's a T/N about it.

What an inspiring woman. She's splitting rocks in half like a beast, and the next scene she's very gracefully picking tomatoes, looking like a delicate goddess. I just don't get how someone can be like her, she's so strong and feminine at the same time. Seriously in awe of her, and those tomatoes look great too, lol.

What I love about her videos, besides them being stunningly beautiful, is that she shows how much effort goes into growing and preserving your own food. No romanticism but the real, hard work that goes into creating something beautiful. This creates a whole new level of appreciation for all the things you have. And actually, that's the way it's supposed to be. We forget to appreciate our things because they are cheap and we are no longer connected to the production process. This is a main reason for why we are destroying our planet, because we are no longer connected to it.
