Why do older people always say Millenials, when they really mean Gen Z?

The NBA decides how they officiate games. They made a conscious decision to completely reinterpret a bunch of the rules of the game in favor of the offense. The current iteration of the NBA is an embarrassment and it has more to do with the NBA's perception of Millennials then millennials themselves.
@bb11111162 ай бұрын
Yes, the NBA changed the rules. But why? I think it was to appeal to casual fans, including international casual fans, who want to see more fast breaks and 3 point shots.
@gnewt752 ай бұрын
@@bb1111116the problem with this assessment is that the casual fan who gets what you've described in a game, gets bored. The NBA all star game this season is an example. No defense and chucking up 3's to score 211 points. The fans looked bored in the stands. Why? Because there's no defense being played. You can give a fan/person what they want but it doesn't mean what you have given them is a good thing to get.
@russellward46242 ай бұрын
@gnewt75 and it also pushes away the hard-core fans who are your bread and butter. Appealing to casual fans is fine, but not at the expense of the audience that "pays the fare". I was born in '72 and loved basketball until the strike in 98? After that they started letting I all the high-school kids who just weren't ready. Turned me off and I never went back.
@mj23goat32 ай бұрын
"...it has more to do with the NBA's perception of Millennials then millennials themselves." Spoken like a narcissistic Millennial, blaming everyone but themselves. Ever heard of this thing called the National Basketball Players Association? If the players don't like something the NBA front office is doing, that's why they have a UNION. They can stop all of the reinterpreting of the rules any time they want.
@playlistiphone8743Ай бұрын
@@russellward4624 I understand your point in principle but an NBA General Manager evaluates talent. Would you say that Kobe Bryant or LeBron James weren’t ready? For every Kwame Brown, I can counter with a Kevin Garnett or a Dwight Howard. There was no minor league farm system back then and players have to always continue to be developed anyway.

I like the long shot vs dropping it down to a big guy who plows over the person defending him. And so they started doubling the big man and they would kick it out to a 3 pt shot a lot. So the trend of the 3pt shot has been a long time coming....it wasn't all of the sudden. The further the shot, the harder it gets to make. I think it's great and I watched Jordan, Bird, Johnson, Kareem, Olajuwon, Kobe, and the 3 pointer was becoming more and more significant in winning big games. If they doubled your big man, kick it out and sink the 3. It was a huge factor. Now you come down the court and come off a screen to shoot the 3. It's amazing how much they make it. Maybe back it up another 1 foot but defensive grinds can be boring to watch. It's hard to appreciate hard fought points in the paint denied unless you've played the game. And it's about winning. America and even the world forget quickly who finished 2nd place.

Sports evolve just like other industries. NFL changed their rules in 1978 to open up passing and offenses. That’s when guys like Fouts, Montana, the 83 draft class ushered in a new era of the sport. Teams adapt to these changes and evolve their strategies accordingly. No different in basketball. BTW the 1980s had a lot of high scoring teams too if I recall 🧐

So, you you say “ruined” you mean “aren’t paying for”. So really, this headline should read “NBA fell victim to the free market, when they no longer made a competitive product”. There’s always the assumption in “Millenials ruined the thing” headline that the status quo is the way things should be. But if you’re a conservative, then market forces are the only way to measure a things value. If the market says the NBA’s product isn’t worth the price, the market moves those dollars to someplace else. So rejoice, Capitalists! The Free Market has Spoken!

NBA overcompensated when they cracked down on the rough & tumble era highlighted by the Detroit Pistons "bad boys". The owners wanted it b/c they didn't want their mega earning players to get injured by teams like Detroit that had no layups rule, they would absolute hammer you and tackle you like the NFL to not give up an easy shot. NFL has done the same thing, you can't touch a QB hardly without getting a roughing the passer. Even if a QB runs the defense has to go 3/4 speed b/c if they slide at the last second and you touch them it;s a personal foul.

Too much scoring to the point where it’s expected for a superstar to score 100 points. There’s no excitement because defense is no longer the foundation. Athletes are getting more talented now and that’s okay. NBA just needs to be creative in finding ways to make the game exciting and competitive again. It’s not by scoring 100 points because it’s saturated now. Probably make the court bigger and create a four point shot.
