Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am doing something a little crazy, I am going to try and skate in hockey rental skates! This is a special request from a young skater at my home rink. I put off making this for a year, but she kept patiently asking, so I thought I better give it a go. It actually went much better than I thought, which just means, don't put things off just because you are a little scared. I hope you enjoy this! Shows how much of a difference buying your own skates can have on a persons ability to progress.

Such a difference! Having your own skates, that break in to your own foot and can be sharpened to your preference makes a huge difference in the ability to progress.

Hi Coach Julia - years ago I tried switching from figure to hockey skates(long story) I cried the first time I put them on - then went back to going to the learn to skate classes. I persevered for a year and then went back to my lovely figure skates!

Coach Julia, you are so brave and fabulous in those dull bladed rental hockey skates! I was so nervous watching and scared for you, and I was so happy that you did not fall! 🙂

Hi Coach, I was out on eye surgery, (try skating with one eye,,,) What I got out of the video is you don't need a toe pick to do a Waltz jump landing. You've had videos on skate sharping and edge grip. I switched from 11mm to 13mm grind so I can slid better. LOL it's the toe pick that messes me up. Love you and your videos, thank you Coach Julia!

thank you SO much for doing this! I'm just learning how to skate (at 60!) on figure skates and now I feel way better about where I am right now. There is a learning curve and I'm probably not as awful as I feel I am.

Sometimes when I am out of town and feeling separation anxiety with the ice, and there happens to be a rink nearby, I think of getting in a pair of rental hockey skates and practicing whatever. Gut feelings say I could do edge jumps, especially the loop jump. Someday I’m gonna try it.
@_empty_4945
@_empty_4945 Ай бұрын
Edge jumps still require a toepick. Doing it in hockey skates is just asking for a slip up

I'm beginner wearing hokey skates now. Thanks for showing me the different feelings bw hokey and figure skates. Some one also told me hokey is harder? Maybe I should try figure skate for 3-turn? The reason I uses hokey was because I felt I was blocked by the teeth and slow while skating forward :)

I always think that hockey is a team sport, though solo fun can satisfy curiosity. It's like ... playing basketball alone in the court.. Yet I respect every hockey-skater on the ice who enjoys themselves. They have what they want (why not?). To be honest, my heart raced even though I was just watching your playing it.

lol i literally just watched the other one yesterday, then this one popped up on my feed today kind of sad that rentals are that dull but i guess it is probs safer to not make them too sharp so that ppl dont accidentally cut themselves or others?

I tried my friend's hockey skates. She was a skate guard, so they weren't rentals. I felt like I was skating on butter knives! LOL. If you really want a challenge, try doing crossovers in speed skates! OMG.

The dullness really does make a massive difference. I was watching some learn to skate kids after my class and it looked like their rentals were just slipping around on top of the ice.
@CoachJulia

I always feel so bad for learn to skate kids in rentals. But then some of them get so used to the rentals that when they get their own skates it is a difficult adjustment.

@@CoachJulia I'm nowhere near the skater you are, but when I put on my hockey skates, the lack of a heel in the hockey boot makes me feel like my toes are jacked up in the air. At least compared to my dance skates. You looked remarkably comfortable so quickly in the rentals, I was impressed.

I never understood how bad rentals could be. I thought people were exaggerating. I have a 4 year old who has been skating for over a year with a private coach and group lessons. We went skating in Fl when we visited my dad. We used rentals and I kept feeling like I was getting caught in someone else’s grooves. (Does that make sense?) my daughter kept tripping over the toe pick which she almost never does in her own skates.

@@CoachJulia If you get a chance to have a redo, Have them sharpen the blades a head of time and for you to try them out and see what a difference it is. However, this video really needed to be done. And greatly appreciate the time and effort on what you have done. I come across a lot of new skaters and spend time with them on how the blade should feel on the ice. Love your lessons. Bluessings
