Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today's video is in response to a question about improving backward crossover technique. I thought this was such a universal problem for so many skaters that it would be fun to do a video in response. I hope you all find it helpful! Here is the original video the comment was left on...

Timely I’m going skating in 15 minutes training my backwards crossovers 😏😂 Edit: Did 3 hrs skating today. This vlog really helped, started to get the hang of backwards crossovers. I stop get off the ice, re watch part of the video to refresh my memory and try again. Now finding my backwards crossovers are better than my front 😳👍

Thank you, Julia. I started skating four seasons ago, and I still find these extremely challenging. EDIT: Focusing pumping to the front instead of to the side did help! For me, it's easier if I bend from the hip also. My biggest issue on one side was that my standing leg would not stay on the circle and would do a lemon. It occurred to me to transfer more weight on the standing leg, and that did the trick, in case anyone else has this problem too.

Thank you Julia, I just had my fifth time on the ice last week (I’m 33) and the last time (second time alone without my coach) I was totally paralyzed on the ice and managed to do only one round around the rink without holding on to anything yes but feeling so bad and then I binged watched your channel and it gives me so much motivation to go there again… !! plus I love your playlists about skates history and your lust for vintage !!! Thx so much ❤🎉

I always enjoy how well you break down the different moves in your videos. As a parent of figure skaters, it helps me understand what is going on without me getting out on the ice myself. A question that I might have (as a parent) is: What information/advice would you think is important for parents to know to help our children and coaches through lessons/practice time/competitions? (I know that covers a lot of territory, but I feel that parents could use help in each area 😊) Thank you, for being such a fabulous coach!!!

I would say u need to add another 5% of details explanation - for instance here = u need the cross over foot to be on the inside edge and the free foot on the outside edge , it's very crucial in order to execute it with ease and safety, I know u mentioned it in the video but u didn't emphasis it enough and it took me some time to understand that factor in order to actually exceute it , however the rest is amazing I learned the backwards cross overs in this video in under 5 min ur amazing keep going thanks a ton.

Wow! An answer to my prayers, Coach Julia! I’m working on backwards crossovers for my ISI Beta test. I was at my private lesson yesterday and my coach said I need to adjust my posture for my clockwise backwards crossovers when doing the more advanced method. I already can do the “ice dance” backwards crossovers going counterclockwise consistently, but I need to slightly adjust my posture so I don’t hear my toe picks so often. When angling the foot, she thinks of it as backing a car into a parking space. I’ll keep your tips in mind when I go practice today.

I ended up getting my wife to start skating a couple of months ago. She’s working on crossovers (forward crossovers for now) and I’m trying to get her to think about using the edges correctly. Wife would tell coach that I’m telling her to use the edges, and coach would give me the looks…something along the lines of “I remember when you were dragging your toepicks the whole time” Humble beginnings I guess. One thing I’ve been trying to implement lately is the “active edge.” It seems to be what I’ve been missing in my forward scratch spin all these years. Since I started thinking of it, scratch spins got a lot better. (Still pathetic, but way better than before. Like, I almost got emotional the other day. Heck, even coach got excited that day) Also, jumps are a lot better on days that I really “hook the edges into the ice (that’s how I would describe the feel of an active edge)” Of course, the biggest problem is that there are days when the edges aren’t as active…

Julia, I think the fourth issue is insufficient bending in the knee, too high posture.
@zeborahnz
@zeborahnz 2 ай бұрын
I agree - Julia briefly mentioned bending in the knee rather than in the hip, but bending *deeply* in the knee really helps me. For the longest time I just couldn't get my back leg far enough behind for the cross, but one day (after a long break focusing on other things) I came back to it and suddenly it was easy - because in the meantime I'd got into a better habit of bending my knees deeper. For the "step over" crossovers, I still have a very scratchy undercut. So still lots of practice needed of *really* bending the knees so I can stroke with the whole blade not just the toe. But at least I'm not stepping with as much of a "thomp!" as I used to! 😆

Hello! Do you have a video for fixing the “beginners’ posture” in general? I find that I’m leaning forward despite having my knees bent, and my lower back aches after a while. I try to fix my posture when I’m standing but once I start forward stroking I just lean forward/my shoulders don’t align with my hips

It's like using the other hand to write your name. One side is always a little tougher. It means a bit extra practice on that side.

@@CoachJuliaomg I would love that!! And yes… most rinks here (…. Countrywide) close in early March and open in October. Only very few are open over the summer. (And some for clubs where it’s extremely expensive and limited time for selected time slots). So yea, winter only sport. Therefore off ice/summer training tips would be great.

@CoachJulia Hi again Julia, so my rink is closed now and I was thinking about getting ankle weights for off-ice training, about as heavy as my skates, to practice spirals, bunny hops, tap toe and waltz jumps, etc., and was wondering if you had any experience in this regard. Some warn to be careful with the knees but the skates are that heavy anyway, so I don't see why not trying. Perhaps you could address this in case you do an off-ice video. Thanks again. Greetings from Austria 👋☺️

If a person is young, say, 3 - 20 something, Im sure he must have a coach. Adult learners may choose not to, because they are grown up and meeting no expectation. Adult like me never wants to stretch my own legs to do an arabesque, that is too dangerous so adults usually won't look for a coach. Just my personal opinion.
