Nice video. Concise. When I started swimming more than a mile I forced myself to learn bilateral breathing, every 3rd. I was 53 at the time. I had spent the previous decades, from the time I learned to swim at the Y, breathing every stroke out of my left side (I'm a lefty). Recently I started trying to stretch to every 5 strokes. Because I learned bilateral, I can change up as needed. Sometimes every 4. Sometimes I'll do 3,4,5 in one lap. I now swim at least 4 miles a day 5 to 6 days a week. Degenerative osteoarthritis eliminated aerobic work that impacts my feet. So I swim a lot. Granted, I don;t look like a person that can swim that far. But some day I will. :D

Question on the multiple strokes (3 to 5) do you hold your breath for a little while to keep from exhaling all your air to fast?
@CoachRobbBeams
@CoachRobbBeams 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching - I wouldn't "hold your breathe" because you start to go hypoxic. Instead, let just a little bit out so that by the time you are ready to breathe, the vacuum effect is at full tilt. Keep me posted if you have any challenges with this.

Great video, I will get my 7 year daughter who is about to get into competitive swimming to start doing breathing every 5 stroke. For a 50m and 100m Freestyle race what is the best approach to go fast.

I recently started swimming and got my breathing somewhat correct however i breath every stroke, i feel i have got the breathing right because i am not getting tired and able to swim some distance. How do i breath every 2 or 3 strokes? I understand this will help me to go long distance.

The key is to balance the rate of exhalation - if you exhale too quickly, you will run out of breathe. It is all about finding the right balance of inhale and exhale based on your breathing rate. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Robb, I've recently been learning how to side breathe and have been making good progress over the last month - from no head in the water at all to 12 - 18 lengths with side breathing (breaks inbetween lengths of course!) I've noticed I start very well but toward the end of the length I get the bizarre feeling of having no more air to blow out but struggling to fully replenish on the breath in. Also I start off breathing after 7 or 8 strokes then less and less as I fatigue down the pool I think something is off here - should I try after every three? I haven't really tried bilateral (always favoring one side) so I guess I could do 4 and switch sides every 25m. I guess I've only been breathing when I think I really really need to as opposed to following a regular pattern/rhythm. Do you think a 3 stroke style would help me? My focus right now is duration and being relaxed, thanks!

I'm a runner but when I swim for cross training I generally breath every 4. Is that a bad thing. It's just so I could breath on the right side. If I go 3 or 5 I would have to alternate sides.

Vince-thanks for watching and leaving a comment! For you using swimming as a cross training, there isn't anything that you do that won't benefit your running. The key is to stay consistent. Pay close attention to the muscle tightness in your upper shoulders and back that may occur when you breathe on one side only. Bi-lateral breathing will help keep the muscular development balanced in your shoulders. Please keep me posted on your progress.

That's every two strokes, not every stroke. Every stroke is an advanced technique only possible for swimmers with very strong necks.
