Today you get an inside look into a coaching session I had with Evan Smith; a pro currently ranked at no.31 in the world with a rating of 1024. In this session we work on form changes that will help him be more consistent with his backhands off the tee on tour.

Can confirm an in person lesson with Josh is excellent. At the time of my lesson in February (I think) I was about 865 rated and threw around 330-350 golf lines. Took me a few months working on it but now I'm 915 throwing consistent 390-410. It's definitely made the game more enjoyable so Josh feel free to come back through Florida again haha

If I’m correct, you’ve already been/are a professional tennis instructor? I’m not an expert but a lot of the movements are similar. You provide the general population really good information. It may not be scientific yet but you’ll be mentioned for years to come as the sport grows as an innovative force. Not every pro can teach so no need to judge yourself so hard. I’m one of the thousands of people that you’ve helped improve without direct contact. Please keep doing what you’re doing for the thousands of us that follow your instruction from a distance. Thank you for all of your teams extra efforts and hard work.

This was great. I think it took me about 3 hours to get through because I kept pausing to work on my own form. The "focus back" to keep the shoulders from rotating too early/too much is super useful, thank you for that cue. I could tell an immediate difference. And the points on posture and trail leg counterbalance were excellent reinforcement for me. Thanks so much for posting this.

Josh, it's amazing how effectively Evan Smith takes in what you're saying, and actually understands what to change. And then immediately makes those changes. Also Leon Sonnleitner did another video recently (his latest as of this post) and the most impressive thing to me in it is how hard Leon hard to work to try and emulate bad form elements. I think these things show there are other areas that needs focus on by the disc golf form coaching community. Teaching form is one thing. But training someone to be coachable is something else. And getting it to where a player has a hard time reverting to bad form is probably the ideal situation (unless they're training to be a coach and have to emulate bad form on command). Just some interesting things (to me at least) this week on form coaching. 🙂

What makes a good coach is being able to take a player from point A to point B. What makes a great coach is being able to take a player from point B to point C. Using Cole redalen as an example, most people would say he’s a finished product (distance wise) because he throws 600 but his body likely has more distance potential that he could access safer and easier. A great coach would be able to help him do that. A lot of people like to throw out numbers but numbers out of context don’t mean anything or say anything about the coach.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 6 ай бұрын
Agreed mostly. Sometimes it’s more impressive to get a player from A to B imo because they don’t have a shot of getting to C. I feel like the real hero coaches are the ones that get that guy that’s absolutely stuck at 250’ for a long time with a lot of effort to 325’. Sometimes that feels like more of a miracle than getting someone from 400’ to 500’+
@mindlander

Love this. One question though... You keep saying, you can throw anhyzers from this bent over position too, which I can't seem to figure out. I find myself standing up in the end, which I think just ends up collapsing the pocket. Which pieces make the anhyzer if not standing up more?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 6 ай бұрын
Standing up *more* does help with anhyzer. But you don’t need to stand up completely or lean back. The best thing I can recommend for now is to go through the Simon slow mo on his longer anhyzers and play/pause your way through his positions to see.

Thanks for releasing this! Are you now primarily focusing on supination for nose down instead of pouring the coffee, or in addition. Also what about setting the supination ahead of time and maintaining it vs add it in at the last moment? I thought in an older nose down vid you talked about both supination and pouring the coffee being used and then in a more recent nose down vid after that you said something like, "ultimately you have to end here." (Where you showed pour the coffee position) But now here you didn't even mention pouring the coffee when telling Evan how to get nose down, is that just because he already does / knows about that so it goes without saying?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 6 ай бұрын
Correct. He throws nose down on certain shots but not others so the reason for him not consistently doing it is because he is not throwing on plane. Those were my thoughts anyways. If he can throw nose down then he is probably already pouring the coffee.
