Arguello was one of the most aesthetically pleasing and technically sound fighters you will ever see. Just stalking people with that perfect stance and those heavy hands. If you want to teach your boxers how to do it right let them watch Alexis Arguello.

I idolized Arguello but that was 40 years ago...just watched a video extolling his strengths and one of them was demonstrating his excellence against southpaws...they showed 3 fights and I feel it emphasized the point but it was fairly misleading if we took the whole picture into account. They showed Arguellos fight Here, Boza-Edwards and Ganigan. Buscemi was given this shot and nothing wrong with that, he's a contender but not in Arguellos league...ok...Boza-Edwards: he was young and it was quite a step up for him and the fight was stopped to safeguard his future. It was a stepping-stone bout and he eventually won a title but against Arguello he was not quite all-world yet. Against Ganigan, Arguello actually got his feet tangled and suffered a knockdown as a result...his own footwork, which admittedly was slow. He stalked, he was highly effective offensively...but he was slow-footed and he was hittable. Someone like Salvador Sanchez would maybe exploit this more fully, idk. The lefty fight they didn't show was against none other than another legend named Jose Luis Ramirez: he knocked Arguello down and lost a fairly disputed decision. As much as I personally idolized Arguello, his style was admirable but, yes, there were vulnerabilities, such as the first Escalera fight. While he won and was dominant, Escalera got a good share of hits in there; over 2 fights he got knocked down like 5 times-but he gave Arguello pretty good opposition...the Pryor fights kinda left a bad taste, largely the whole bottle thing...

I think Alexis just played with Bubba for a while to please the crowd. He could have knocked Bubba out in the first round if he had wanted. He pleased the crowd by not knocking out their hometown hero right away. The people got their money's worth. Thank you Alexis.

Arguello reminds me of Antonio Esparegosa I spelled his name wrong but he was a great champion also

I don't think so. Bubba, I believe it's still a record, is the only man to win four National Golden Gloves tournaments and was robbed in the '72 Olympics. He was a quality guy and had a lot of heart. Alexis may have been able to get him earlier but he certainly didn't play with him.

Arguellos may have been able to but it's more like him to pace himself, and figure him out first, no crazy flailing for a 1st round ko from Alexis.

One of the all-time greats shows characteristic patience against a tough and worthy competitor. Bubba fought with great heart but Alexis is utterly relentless and fights with great efficiency demonstrating awesome power with both hands. A pleasure to watch!

He was a great lightweight but didn't stay there very long and was PEEFECT at 130lbs Junior Lightweight. He couldn't seem to put fighters to sleep with 1 or 2 punches anymore

The great Alexius Argeullo! Many of the young boxers today could take a lesson in class from the late champion. Bubba put up a good fight, however, like my amateur boxing coach used to say, "he could not crack an egg with his punch." What a technician Argeullo was in the ring. RIP Alexius

@@rogermartin798 wrong! the contract wasn't even in the hands of Arguello so how can he sign the contract. he actually confronted Duran about that and Duran in fact apologize for his behavior. but after that Team Duran didn't make any move to make the fight. instead they chased the Leonard fight.

Very weird ending.....Bubba was knocked out....standing up with his eyes open and walking around!! He looked like a sleepwalker if you've ever seen one....turned his back and walked away like wtf?

Ray Mancini did the same thing but they continued the fight anyway. When an opponent turns his back and walks away that is considered a TKO.

Hometown hero got straight up embarrassed by all time great Arguello. Hard to respect a guy that literally turns around and quits in front of a home crowd so dramatically after doing nothing the whole fight. His post fight remarks pissed me off even more, to even suggest that that fight was an even contest at any point is insulting to Arguello and to the audience's intelligence

When I heard the radio broadcast of this fight I was very happy to know that Alexis had won. Today when I see this video I remember my childhood I am still moved by how great our great champion was. Heart? Buscerne? The guy wouldn't commit to throwing a single solid punch. And he quite literally turned around and quit the second Arguello started taking him seriously. Let's be real here: Buscerne was in way over his head, and didn't seem all too eager to fight at any point in this lopsided match

Argeullo was a very bad dude until he met AARON THE HAWK PRYOR , i was a amueter boxer in the late 70s and early 80s and Argeullo was my favorite boxer besides Ali , this really brings back some really good memories

It must have been frustrating for Bubba, he hit Alexis with his best lefts in rounds 4 and 6 and Arguello didn’t flinch. I have to give it to the guy, he was game but out classed. It looked to me that Alexis didn’t respect his power beginning round one. Alexis started setting down on his punches in round 5 and then it was just a matter of time. Good stoppage, Bubba didn’t know we here he was. The great champion, Arguello, RIP.
