Herrin is a former coal mining town in Southern Illinois. Economically, the town is actually doing alright, benefiting from nearby Carbondale and Marion. The second town that I feature in this video is Colp, which is west of Herrin and is tiny. Back in the day, Colp was a town where people of color would go live in a region full of sundown towns.
Herrin: 1:56 - 17:30
Herrin High School: 2:25
Former Maytag Plant: 4:25
Downtown Herrin: 10:00
Colp: 18:00 - 23:00

ahhh Colp... home to the region's only Drive Through Liquor Store. My uncle would often go there in his big red truck, get his beers, and pop open a couple on the way home. also that big factory on the way into Colp used to be the Whirlpool plant

I grew up in Herrin, I feel obligated to correct the Maytag plant as it isn't vacant. It is a storage facility that rents to several companies of varying sizes. In fact my dad was the facility maintenance manager for several years up to his death in 2017. But thank you for the drive thru my town keep up the good work.

Doesn't every small town have a guy or 2 that rides a lawnmower as his only means of transportation. I'm from a small town in Central Illinois. They were there, too

Even Colp itself was segregated in the very beginning. Whites lived in Colp and blacks lived outside the village limits in a community called "Number 9" after the nearby coal mine.

Southern Illinois Little Egypt was a place the mafia out of Chicago and St Louis would come to hide and cool off when they were in trouble in towns like Herrin and Harrisburg..There was a gang down here called the Shelton gang and there was Charlie Birger who was a gangster who had a hold over the coal mining unions controlling them but the mafia didnt have that much interest in it because it was Southern Illinois but Birger and the Sheltons were the trouble makers and they caused the Herrin Massacre..And the KKK had high involvement in the area too but the Sheltons didnt mess with them...But the KKK had a lot of control on other things..The Shelton gang would have loved to have been more involved with the mafia but the Mafia didnt want much involvement with them because the Sheltons were bunch of Hillbilly gangsters and were too sloppy and attracting attention to themselves the mafia were private and more subtle but the Sheltons were quite smart..They had deep control down here..Cairo was one of the Sheltons spots too it was because of them that Cairo suffered so much and failed as a town ..Lots and lots of history in southern Illinois..

We used to go to Nesler's Polar Whip restaurant in Energy, which is a bit south of Herrin on IL 148 every time we were in the area. I think it is still there. Very reasonably priced food. All the natives eat there!

You drove by a Lewis and Clark landmark at 5:27... apparently they went through that spot when they were doing their thing. And on the other side of the stone fence there, there's the "gingerbread house", though it's fallen into disrepair.

Growing up in the Danville area, what I've found people in other parts of the country to misunderstand is racial injustices happened in Northern states too. There's a misconception that once you go so far North such behaviors end. The sundown town policies are still alive and well. I was actually stopped in 1985 for such a violation taking the back roads to an away basketball game. Another cheerleader a passenger was noticed and I was warned. 😕 Returning to Danville a few years ago needed by my mother before her passing, THERE ARE NO JOBS. YOU ARE EITHER A DRUG MAKER OR DEALER, PROSTITUTE, OR ON A WAITING LIST TO WORK AT CASEY'S, a gas station pizza combination chain popular there. Years of destitution become multiple generations affected, people lose hope. Lose ambition to even have hope. Definitely not the state that I grew up in. Very sad.

Thanks so much for filming and posting this. I grew up in Herrin through high school (HHS Class of '77), and this was very emotional to see. The commenter who mentioned Thornton's market (shown at at around 4:52) really rang a bell. For years, I stopped by there for soda and candy and Mad magazines every day after school at Southside Elem. (on 13th?), and was a regular customer for those illegal fireworks every July 4th. It's kind of amazing to see that the population in Herrin is not declining like so many other towns in the area, and the music store on Park Ave. where I bought guitar strings is still a music store (with the big 1960s BALDWIN sign). The old Annex movie theater -- which was basically closed and sorely missed by old-timers the whole time I was growing up there -- now has a marquee out front with "Annex" on it. I hope they can fill the house.

You mentioned the Herrin Massacre, the scab workers who were murdered were recruited from the Chicago area. The great tragegy is that one of those scabs was a Russian Immigrant who fought in WW1 in the US Army. He just wanted a job! The murdered scabs were buried in an unmarked corner of the Herrin City Cemetery. Recently they found the graves and put up a marker!

I have so much enjoyed your videos on Southern Illinois. I live in a small town near Rend Lake. I'm from Knoxville, Tn. Marriage is keeping me here. You are right on about the sundown towns. My wife, a wonderful woman, has always lived in a town that is 96% white. In the town I currently live, if a black man stops at Casey's for gas, I get a call from my neighbors telling me about it and asking if I want to join them in watching. I take my wife to Knoxville and we are at Walmart surrounded by all kinds of people and she is nervous. She doesn't say anything, but i can tell. I'm hoping she will get more comfortable, but when you are so isolated, how are things supposed to change? Now i ain't saying Knoxville is perfect, far from it, but at least you have the opportunity to meet different folks and make friends. Racism runs deep in these communities.

My father was born in Colp in 1925. We are white. He and his family of 5 moved to Carterville when Dad was in the fourth grade. He gained the nick name of "Doc" at the age of 4, after the town's black country doctor Andrew Springs. That is who the one street is named after. My grandfather was a coal miner and there was the company store and company housing which is where my dad and grandparents lived. If you want more info on the massacres of that time read the book Bloody Williamson. Those massacres is how the county got it's nickname.

Before it was a Maytag plant it was a Norge plant. I bet you didn't know that. I worked there years ago. You seem to be concentrating on the side streets instead of the main roads; and you're telling all the bad points instead of the good points. It does have good points, you know. Your knowledge of Herrin is extremely limited. The state highway also goes south out of Herrin and takes you to Culp, which you have bypassed again. And your attitude about southern Illinois just sucks.

The Maytag factory was called Norge in 1975 and 1976 when I worked there. They manufactured washing machines and clothes dryers. I had lots of photos but I think I trashed them 8 years ago. There were several stairways up to the roof all over the while building for maintenance to get up there. During breaks and dinner lots of males & females went to the root for sex. None of the people having sex were married to each other. One day 2 workers vanished they were having sex in a railroad car when the door closed and the train left. 3 days later they were both found alive 2000 miles away near Canada. LOL. I bet that was 3 days of good sex.
