Quasimoto7 Yeah, I am a fairly old guy and I can remember when steam was king in the '50s. They still run several steam specials near where I live and it reminds me of the old days with the smell of coal and hot oil. I like the scenery in the video with the snow and pretty towns along the way.

I think it’s because we didn’t make our steam engines for one purpose. All of our steam engines are very mixed traffic. Imo, later American steam engines have more of a utilitarian, “gonna crush this hill” look to them, where as British steamers have more of a posh/high class appearance.

1309 returned to the rails back in December 2021, and the WM is accepting donations to possibly make 734 run again.

@@SadFairlie Man, I almost forgot I made this comment all that time ago. But, yes, I’ve been keeping on top of that. With them both being Baldwin engines, if they ever run together, the volume of the chuffing is going to be something to behold.

Why does exhaust beat sound off at 9:15?

Valve timing probably out..., sounds off beat throughout this recording.

The wheels have counterweights on them. If you look at a image of one you will see one side partially filled instead of spokes. That weight was to counter the eccentric wobble wheels would have at higher speeds, since otherwise the stress on the axles, rods and the ride of the train itself would be destructive. The consequence was that the train had a power stroke when that weight was at the top of the rotation, giving that rapid "chuff chuff" as the weight turned downwards. When the weight was being cranked to the top of the rotation, it delayed the pistons from moving as fast since more pressure was necessary to be built up in the piston, giving for the long delayed chuff. This is mostly unnoticable at steady operation, but is exaggerated when the train is moving uphill.

If I remember right, unfortunately I don't think the 734 will be running for a while due to a boiler inspection and overhaul. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to see a double header at some point though

I imagine they'll alternate to keep a steam engine operating on the premises at all times but I don't know for sure. There may be some overlap
