All aboard! Take a ride on a re-created narrow gauge logging railroad! This week, we travel to the mountains just outside Yosemite National Park to visit a historic steam train. The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad opened in 1962 and operates steam powered tourist trains through the mountains from April through October each year. The right of way was originally built by the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Co. around the turn of the last century and was abandoned in the 1930's. Today, the railroad thrills thousands of guests each year on their way to and from Yosemite National Park.

As an Australian, I saw this railway on a DVD called America by Rail. It was such an old video I didn't know if the railway was still there. After seeing this video, I'm glad that it's still running after it was filmed long ago.

First rode the YMSP RR in the fall of 1969. Couple that w/the many weekends camping at the Bridalveil Creek Campground, skiing at Badger Pass, hiking the John Muir Trail from Tuolumne Meadows, and many visits to Inspiration Point and Half Dome, and Yosemite has always been our al ltime favorite national park. Looks like wonderful maintenance efforts have prevailed on the RR it looks even prettier now than in one's memories!

Short version: the three pistons on the right side of locomotive drive the eccentrics on the driveshaft, which transferred the power to the wheels via beveled gears. The driveshaft is fitted with universal joints, making in flexible. The end result is that all the wheels of the locomotive are powered. The end result is a powerful engine capable of negotiating sharp curves and climbing steep grades, but the cost of being very slow and extremely rough on its parts.

+Rob Catt The amazing thing is, the locomotive is almost completely original. 95% of the parts and components are original to the engine given that she was still fairly young when Yosemite Mountain bought her, and she was abused the least of all the Westside engines. She's had tubes, stays, wheels, and bearings replaced over time, but she's mainly only required routine maintenance during her operating career at Yosemite Mountain.

Halfway through the ride the train stops in the middle of the forest and let you out for a little bit to take some pictures. When I was a kid the family and I would let everybody get on the train and we would let them leave knowing that another train would come in an hour or so and we'd have the whole forest to ourselves to have lunch at a couple of picnic tables had put their.

These locomotive's are Shay geared steam logging locomotive's. They use a drive shaft to transmit power to all wheels through bevel gears, with the added bonus of being more flexible than conventional rod-driven steam locomotives. Why Ephiram Shay chose this particular arrangement, we will probably never know, but the Shays were the most popular geared locomotive type, due to ease of maintenance and fantastic power output.

Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio, built the Shays for many years. A Shay is said to have been the last steam locomotive built by Lima in the early 1950's. Lima allowed big 3 truck Shays to be built under license on the west coast of the US for a time and they were known as Pacific Coast Shays. Operating Shays can be found at the Roaring Camp and Big Trees, the Georgetown Loop, Cass Scenic Railway, the Yosemite Mountain and Sugar Pine and several other places around the US.
