Chad fixes the shifter bracket that broke on the way back from Chester. We sail home from Sambro to Halifax, back to our old mooring in the Arm. We take O out to see the Tall Ships in the Harbour, go on a ferry ride to explore George's island, and board one of the visiting Tall Ships.

I really enjoy the honesty of the content of your videos. It takes alot to not edit out the mistakes or miss judgments but we all do them and I really appreciate that you're willing to put it all out there. Cognitive thinking and common sense I think are most important to keep you safe, you have shown that you are constantly doing both and willing to sacrifice fun in favor of saftey. People will always think their way is better, don't let the trolls affect your choices on content. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more Adventure.

Great episode Chad and Katie I'm glad your daughter enjoys getting out on the water with you. :) The Maas'damp' was probably on her way to Charlottetown for a rainy day visit. US Coast Guard Eagle. A WWI war prize, courtesy of "the Germans". Your repair will probably outlast your ownership of that boat, but I agree, replace it with the cast part and you can be pretty sure you won't have to mess with it again. Control cables are SUCH a pain. I would imagine ships traversing the area need to stay in a confined area. Understanding that will help ease the anxiety when they approach. In the Chesapeake, the shipping channel is well defined, but tugs with barges drawing much less, don't have to follow.... A few years ago, we had one bearing down on us, while it was blowing 25 to 30. Luckily, I guessed correctly and they passed us to port. My learning was, when it doubt, CALL THEM, and ask their intentions. They don't want to hit you any more than you want to be be hit by them. You know, "paperwork". Nice video. I am guessing your summer temps get to the 80s and that's it. Fair winds, SV Independence.

I enjoyed this video, especially as I was unable to get to see the tall ships. Everything looks different from the water and the ability to view tall ships from a sailboat is unique as well. Nice to see you both becoming familiar with handling your boat and especially having FUN!!! Keep it up. :) Btw, have you tried sailing away from and to your mooring ... no engine? You'll get lots of skill in handling your sails and the boat from doing that while you're on a mooring.

@CoastLife
@CoastLife 7 жыл бұрын
We've been a bit hesitant as there's typically a lot of boats around our mooring. But as our sailing skills progress, our goal is to sail on and off our mooring, motoring only when necessary. We definitely enjoying sailing rather than motoring :) The only way to get better is with practice, and yes we get to know our boat a lot better with the sails up!
@llarlee4864

Coast Life Yes, I understand on the boats around you. I had the luxury of no neighbours where mine was moored so no worries there. It can take a boat length or two to get enough speed to steer so am with you in that regard. Enjoying seeing the vids of things that are familiar. You're doing well. Keep it up. :)

Nice video Chad & Katie. wonderful scenery up there in our neighbor to the north. What happened to cause the crack in the binnacle column? We took ours apart (if you remember we also have a Hunter 34 like yours) this season to remove unnecessary wiring from old instruments. I remember how all the linkages have to go back together just right for everything to work smoothly. Helped to take pictures and videos so we knew where to replace everything. We're installing (it's been months) a Raymarine Linear Drive autopilot in the aft cabin. Had to purchase a tiller arm that connects to the rudder post and mount the motor back near the aft water tank. Still haven't placed the electronics or wiring...looking forward to your next video already!
@CoastLife
@CoastLife 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, we don't know what happened to cause the linkage to break. Repeated stress? Old age? It just broke without warning on our way back from Chester in our last video. We've read that it happens often and people replace it with metal, which is what we'll end up doing. Sounds like quite the autopilot project! Best of luck!

Fun episode! So It's been a while now, but how do you feel about the difference between the smaller trailer-able boat and this one? Obviously the headroom is a plus, but do you find anything with the new and larger sailboat more challenging and/or less desirable than having the older tiller steered boat?
@CoastLife
@CoastLife 7 жыл бұрын
We do suffer from 'tiller head' from time to time, but otherwise we love the bigger boat. Much more comfy, we can cook, there's hot water, more livable all around.

Hey guys. Love the videos. My wife and i are waiting for the next one. Its funny. My tranny link just broke also. I own an old sailboat, that breaks on a regular bases, but we love it! Don't worry about the negative comments. We were all beginners once and we are all still learning. You are doing fine. A preventer is a great idea for downwind and really easy to set up. Do you have a chart plotter? They are a great investment for not much money. Are you guys still in Sambro? We are in Halifax and sail the harbour regularly. Would be cool to meet up sometime!

Sambro yes. We plan to head out to inner Sambro island, crystal crescent beach, and rouges roost from there. We haven't set up a preventer yet, but are definitely talking about it. We'll probably rig something up, but in the harbour the wind shifts so quickly, we are hardly on the same course for very long.

I watch several sailing channels and my coments are not meant to be rude or hurtful. When you guys let that cruise ship get so close to you and other choices I see you make it honestly appears to me you need far more time on the water with qualified sailors so hopefully you don't become a negitive statistic. Education is prevention.

"Barry M Spiegler Take a class, do the homework, guys like you hurt others for no reason. You're doing a vlog and more interested in that than learning how to sail safely and with your daughter aboard. Not cool. It's not hard but it's not baking a cake either."- This comment was not meant to be rude or hurtful? We do appreciate constructive comments, and we will make mistakes, and we definitely need more time on the water. That's what we're doing. We're just documenting the journey. You assume that we are doing nothing to learn and better ourselves, and you are quite wrong.
@Dvseire
@Dvseire 7 жыл бұрын
Chad said in the video, that they were sailing a course close to the marker buoys when the container ship and cruise ship were passing them, so they were as far over as they could safely be at the time, also the onus is on the other vessels to give way to the vessel under sail and take appropriate evasive action, perhaps you should direct your criticism to the cruise line and their captain instead.
@CoastLife
@CoastLife 7 жыл бұрын
You don't even know where the channel buoys were based on the video! We we're outside of the shipping lane bouys by 100 feet, close to shore in 30 feet of water in the narrowest part of the channel. We stayed a very obvious course parallel to the land and away from the shipping lane, We didn't want to be any close to shore. We monitored channel 16 on VHF. the ship didn't honk at us nor try to hail us. His course was obvious and consistent like ours. Our first video you watched/commented on??... wow, we motored for 10 min heard a noise and returned to port. so reckless of us. Yup, we sucked at docking in 20 knot winds on the beam when stressed about the motor, but our daughter was safely in the cabin with a life vest on. We're getting better. if you'll note we didn't take our daughter on the big trip in. and what do you know about our friends sailing experience? Your assuming everything and asking nothing. Anyways, as our channel grows we'll just have to get better at ignoring comments like yours. as they take up a lot of energy better spent else where.

When you see a container ship or a cruise ship 100 feet is way too close. I know the books say the sailing boat has right of way but there is right and dead right... common sense is stay away. I've been in races where you just have to stop and let them pass and you shouldn't ever get closer than 1/4 mile not a hundred feet.

Barry, your Facebook comment on one of our videos was pretty rude and attacking. And now you're here offering the same condensed advice. You were so rude on Facebook I assumed you were a bitter man with nothing better to do. So I went to your Facebook wall. You seem pretty positive there and it seems to be you're proudly living on your sailboat. So instead of insulting us with vague advice as you have, maybe you could offer advice from your experiences. Lots of commentators do that, and we greatly appreciate that. We are real people here sharing some of our more vulnerable moments as we learn to sail (we did have lessons by the way, and we are almost complete our RYA day skipper training, not that you asked). It's comments like yours that would be the only reason we wouldn't want to bother anymore (luckily most people are supportive) . There's lots of other sailing channels, I'm sure you can find ones to watch that are more your speed. ~ Chad & Katie
