The recent worldwide anti-racism protests have fueled a heated discussion over a number of public artworks, monuments and street names around the world and in Germany. Once perceived as honorable, today some of them are considered offensive. So who decides what stays, and what goes - and how is that decision made? The German city of Coburg is grappling with that very question, as a petition circulates demanding that the town change its Coat of Arms, which is meant to depict the local patron saint, Saint Maurice, also known as the 'Moor' of Coburg.

@@MrDgo4life do you know how long it takes for someone to become a saint? How accurates do you think a statue is when, at best, it was comissioned decades (but more likely centuries) after that person has already died. Mauritius (if he even existed) died around 290 so it's safe to say that nobody knows what he looked like, especially since he wasn't wealthy enough to comission a statue or portrait of himself.

The elders in my life always told me to "Believe half what u see and none of what u hear." So my response will reflect this If she was born and raised in Germany, I'm gonna assume because she's speaking fluent German, isn't it weird she doesn't know historical significance of Saint Maurice, the coat of arms, those statues, and the other caricatures, found in Germany that have to do with the Moors? Or this could be a ploy to further suppress real world history by trying these things erased and torn down. This woman could be consciously or unconsciously helping to achieve that goal. Not every one of those statues or caricatures is Saint Maurice. Something is being hidden but u don't have to go no further than an old history book on Europe to put the pieces together

In fact it is said some of them even fought to conquer Spain until it was taken back by the crusades, so in any case how is venerating one individual who did good for a community and is respected in memory racist just because the statue has some type of earring, haha go to east Africa and see how some of our people has piercing and its beautiful I think. The earrings were added in the 19th century and is the only part of the depiction that is actually somewhat connected to colonialism. However, the Saint is portrait very differently but I checked the petition by the woman in the video and she makes no distinction at all. For seemingly all are racist and considered that she thinks that one image with the earrings means all Africans look the same and that it signals exoticism and savagery/wildness, makes me suspect that she actually thinks that of Africans and she is projecting.

@@legalize.brokkoli Fun fact they actually considered it racist but because Native Americans are a very small minority in America that doesn't even form a solid 1% of the population means that society largely ignored and overlooked them until BLM and SJWs brang the issue to light and it materialized in the football team owners in considering its rebrand.

I don’t think it’s racist. The portrayal may be exaggerated, but it is honored based on the community interviewed and the extravagant architect linked with the coat of Arms. Also, it was two billionaires that started the move and claim it is a racist portrayal. Leaving me skeptical because there may be an underlying reason for it aside from the racist portrayal in her/their remark.

I could see how the flag's depiction of the man is very caricature like, red lips, exaggerated comical features. It's as if someone depicted a European venerated figure with the inbred habsburg look. It would be nice if they could update the design on the flag so he is actually depicted like a saint

I suspect Alisha, who is supposed to be “from the area”, has some African ancestry. She cares about the image of her people. Racial consciousness is her primary motivation causing her to make all this noise. Otherwise one would expect appreciation for someone being recognized within the context of the time. Unfortunately this is only the beginning for Europe. The more Africans arrive the more such ridiculous demands to alter the past to satisfy these Africans’ egos will be made.

This is not racism, this is stigmatisation. Like all religions do.... Alisha is seeking attention. Does she really need it? She should focus her attention on real problems like religions vs politics or the carbon footprint of the military industrial complex, corrupted governments... And many more. Alisha should understand that suffering is universal.... Opposing ethnicity is a bit outdated. It's not that simple... Any iconic representation is susceptible of endless debates because it can't be absolutely neutral. Icons are biased, distorted, twisted....
