My husband's family does have a coat of arms. It has been passed down from the males in his family since the first came to the US from England in later colonial times. He has a signet ring that has it on it and a painting. Both are family treasures.

ENGLAND? is he Roman Londonder? its like an immigration officer with a green card. GOSH people- do not use Hollywood to learn Europe's history. because that is entertainment. England represent an invading force not NOBLES NATIVE FAMILIES he has to be Irish, Scot, Wales or Nomandy tribe over on the French side that just happens to move to England for work. otherwise is not real. coats of arms come from bloodline of Noble society. you cannot just make it up like this lady's family.

My Dad got in touch with the Royal Armouries and found our CoA. It was granted by King Richard I. It contains a Black cross which represents the ladders used to scale the walls of Jerusalem during the Crusades. Inside the cross are five White sea shells which denote pilgrimages to, or actions within the Holy Land. There was more to it, but that is the main part I remember.

As you rightly pointed out, a mounted man in armour is not distinguishable, which is why knights began to paint symbols on their shields. When knights went on the Crusades, their armour would get too hot, so they covered it in a mantling. The mantling would become tattered and shredded after a fight, which is why it is traditionally shown as such on the arms. Back home, jousts were a popular past-time, which had an element of pageantry. Knights started adopting crests that went on top of their helmets as part of putting on a show. Before the tournament started, a knight would display his arms for all to see. The shield would have the helmet with the crest on top of it, and would often be held on both sides by servants in fancy dress, such as a Neptune or an eagle. Those became the supporters on the depictions of the arms. The entire ensemble could have a larger mantle on top of it for lords of high and noble rank. The master of ceremonies at a joust would be the herald, or town crier. As a knight went onto the jousting arena, the herald would also shout out the blazon (description) of that knight's arms, say "Quarterly, first and fourth, Argent (silver, white), three lozenges conjoined in fess Gules (red), within a border Sable (black); Second and third, Or (gold, yellow), an eagle displayed (with wings spread) Vert (green)." From the customs that the heralds developed arose the discipline of heraldry. A knight would often go into a fight shouting his battle cry, which became emblazoned as the motto. As the armour was expensive, it was handed down from father to son, which is how the coats of arms became hereditary. In time, heraldic authorities formed that kept depictions of arms into rolls, onto which new grants were also recorded. Towards the XVIII century, heralds developed a coherent system of rank for the knightly helmets and noble coronets, with specific designs for gentlemen, esquires, and different kinds of knight (a knight bachelor fought under the banner of another knight, a knight banneret, who had a number of knights under him) and lord (prince, duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron). Far from being the preserve of the nobility, coats of arms were also used by clergy, free burghers, and organisations, such as corporations, universities, or cities. Those who do not get to inherit a coat of arms could apply for a grant to their local heraldic authority, the College of Arms in England, the Lyon Court in Scotland, the Chief Herald in Ireland (also if they have descent from those countries) or the Canadian or South African heraldic authorities, the latter of which can also register arms for any foreign national or organisation.

I have a coat of arms, it is not English but Spanish, specifically from the Kingdom of Aragon. My family has immemorial nobility since 1089 and the coat of arms is a quarter that represents the union of several Aragonese families of the moment. We do not know for sure how long it was given to us, but we have proof that in the middle of the 14th century, according to a registry to prove the nobility of blood, the shield had already been used for generations. It is wonderful how you explain everything, with such detail and joy. Thank you

I am perennially entertained when you get to talking about the first Earl, as I've read Pepys's _Diary_ multiple times including all the jockeying during the Restoration, and the story of the King's return from France. I always think, "Julie, you're not telling the half of it."

My family does have a coat of arms passed down in the male line. I have it engraved for heritage reasons on a signet ring on my pinky. It is British, and the shield is 3 boars heads 2 upper and 1 lower with a purple stripe running across the middle of the shield horizontally. I cherish my signet ring and love having my heritage on my hand at all times. Beautiful video.

I was interested in your definition and explanation. Fortunately, I have inherited my family's coat of arms and much of what you mentioned I learned as a child. Thank you for reconfirming. I'm also the oldest son in this generation and inherited the name given to the oldest son in each generation. Always fun to learn these bits of family history and heraldry.

My family has a Coat of Arms passed down on my fathers great grandmother's Mercer side. They were from Perth, Scotland. She had a copy of it I think and had taken a picture of her's and framed it for my dad. I still have it and she wrote the info behind it on the back of the photograph. I've traced some of my Mercer line but getting back any further is difficult since I live in Canada.

Just want to say that the Montagu coat of arms is within a black border because the Montagu family couldn’t certainly prove they were descended from the Montacute/Montagu family, earls of Salisbury, so the black border is to difference them in the same way the Spencer family couldn’t prove descent from the Despencer family so they added the scallops to the Despencer arms as a difference.

Super episode! I was curious to understand the oak leaves and acorns. Here's info I found from the Metropolitain Museum blog: "In heraldry, the oak is the tree and the tree is the oak. It's seen as a symbol of strength and endurance; even its leaves display a tenacity, less easily shed in the fall than the leaves of other trees."

My father's family has a coat of arms, granted to his ancestor who captained a ship under the Dutch Admiral De Ruyter in the 1600's. My dad had a copy of it made. I think I have it in storage right now.

Americans in general don't really understand that coats of arms belong to individuals, not families, passing from eldest son only to eldest son (or daughter, only if she''s the last of the line...she then combines her arms with her husband on marriage or keeps hers in a diamond shaped shield called a lozenge if single). Very noble or royal families can add various marks for sons who are not the eldest to create separate coats of arms that they can then pass down as above .

We have a family crest, it’s on our silverware, we have a hand painted original on wood and I believe an actual coat ( my brother has it and I am going from memory but it is definitely on satin fabric. ) I wonder if that means it’s a coat of arms? Our family on my mother’s side has a coat of arms. The family name is “ Sole, Solly, Soule, or Soulis”. It has four fish. (Sole) The phrase under it says, “ Labore et Honore”. No coronet or supporters, but there is a knight’s helmet. I’m sure I have no “ right” to it, but it’s fun anyway.

I love learning history with you. We have the Kneeland (Cleland) coat-of-arms but that, I suppose would have stopped with my great uncle who had no sons. Bummer! I’m quite proud of that lineage and how two were given to that line - one from Robert the Bruce and another one from Mary Stewart.

I don't have a coat of arms that I know of but my great grandmothers family have a Hatchment with thier coat-of-arms as well as stained glass windows. The church was built by John Carr of York (architect of Harewood House) who was thier relation and he is also buried in the same church, Horbury, Yorkshire.

My brother have our family coat of arms on our dad's side which the orig dates back to the 10th century. On our arm there is a castle with two knights both holding swords and a lion. The knights represent the Kings personal body guards when he was at home and away andion well is obviously royalty for people that don't know and it it also represents King Richard the lionheart we've been told. On my mum's side we have a very special plaque given to us by the Danish govt in recognition of our direct bloodline to King Harald Hardrada. with a beautiful family tree with a our names added onto it. With the Danes, they didn't have coat of arms back then, just a family tree.

My family are descended from the old Ministrialis of the HRE. Growing up i just thought everyone had a coat of arms.

My mothers side has a coat of arms from Ireland before the wars with England in the Tudor period. The Kelly’s of county Claire had their own coat of arms. My mother and uncle discovered all this when working on the family genealogy a few decades ago. There is some history with my Irish ancestors and a land transaction with Elizabeth I and her favorite the Earl of Leicester. Also have English and Welsh heritage too from my mothers side. Which is partly what peaked my interest in history and the Tudor, Elizabethan and Stuart periods in English history.

Very well explained. Our Kumar Family hails from a special royal heritage from India. Although I am from a 3rd generation descendant of my Paternal Grandfather living in the United States, we always have had an extraordinary sense of pride for our unique lineage. In India, there were Maharajas and Shahs, who were the kings of various kingdoms. My Paternal Grandfather was the Diwan of Gangpur Kingdom which was a medium-sized kingdom in pre-independent India. A Diwan can also have overlapping role comparisons with a Royal Vizier. So, my Paternal Grandfather's position at the Gangpur Palace, called Kishore Mahal, was a Minister in rank right below the Maharaja, or King of Gangpur. We, including my Dear Wife, Radha Kumari Devi, our two Dear Children, Sanjay Arman Kumar II Sanjana Shafali Shaharazade are very proud that we have our own separate Diwan Coat of Arms & Crest, and to be descendants of the Diwan of Gangpur Dr. Sanjay Kumar I & The Entire Diwan of Gangpur Family

The main symbol on the shield is called the “charge,” if free-standing. The background is called the “field.” Your three lozenges are a charge, as they do not divide the entire field.

My family's coat of arms is soo old, it's been around since 1050's. Ruled as the first kings of Sicily before the Hautvilles.

I think that the crest on the Montagu coat of arms is actually a Griffin rather than a bird. The Griffin, or Griffon, was the crest of my school. My family have a coat of arms, though as a less important family than the Montagu family, it has neither crest nor supporters. It is an azure (blue) shield, to represent loyalty, so I assume it was originally granted as a reward for continuous support. The shield is divided with a chevron or (a gold line pointing upwards, originating from the Old French for rafter, apparently) which denotes worthy ambition (or) and faithful service (chevron). There are then three mullets or (gold stars), the mullets represent loyalty, honour, achievement, and hope, and are, surprisingly, likely to be of French origin, because they each have six points, rather than the traditional English five points. What I love about heraldry is how it tells a story. My coat of arms was granted to someone so long ago that we know nothing about him, yet we can read his character from the coat of arms: he was loyal to and gave good service to the monarch, he was most likely an important servant (who were often the younger sons of the nobility) because of the lack of crest, and so on, but he was ambitious, honourable, and, quite possibly, living in hope of further rewards from the King. It is also possible that the monarch granted the right to a coat of arms at a time of trouble, as the meaning refers to loyalty, so the monarch was either ensuring that that loyalty continued, or was rewarding the loyalty after a difficulttime. My ancestor may, or may not, have had a connection with France. All of this from a simple shield. Amazing.

My bloodline inherited the COA and I want to learn more about it. I’ve reached out to the College of Arms and hoping to get some information around it. I do know however that my family fought in the battle of Hastings and was part of the Norman conquest for the battle against England. My family crest is the Golden Hedgehog. We are attached to 2 Irish crest/ coats of arms given to us by Henry the 8th and Elizabeth 1 . And a German and a Dutch . I'm not sure how we received the German one but the Dutch one we got for purchasing Staten Island from the Indians way back in the 1400 or something! Your history is so interesting! My husband is British and has a signet ring which I believe has the family crest, probably not the coat of arms. Not sure though.Thank you for the great video explaining Coat of Arms!

As an American without a documented line to a grantee, I have assumed arms, adhering to the regulations from the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland.

That's really intresting thank you ,❤I found a small wooden coat of arms with oak leaves and remains of feathers in a skip ( yes in a skip, i know, things people trhow aways 🤔) and ever since i'm trying to find out the history of coat of arms. So thank you very much.

Hello. The Lapham family doesn't have an official coat of arms or crest, but there is a description of one in "Laphams in America", so I created one based on that description, just for fun, and am in the process of carving it. It is taking many years. I'll post it if I can figure out how.
