Can't freaking wait for the finale. It's my favorite episode. Also Jaby, I think you have to stop thinking with logic. This whole thing is a fantasy world. It's not meant to be realistic, so logic just doesn't apply. You will have way more fun if you just throw all that thinking out of the window. Just have fun with the ridiculousness and you have the best time. Not saying you can't have a good time otherwise, but I have long accepted that Cobra Kai is basically a live action anime. And that's when it really clicked for me.

Jay is aways forgetting the show is in Karate Kid Universe. My friend, either accept that or don’t watch it. Belt system? Protection gear? People learning martial arts in weeks is already unreal.

All Jaby does is criticize the action and choreography. He doesn’t even let Achara enjoy the show because of all his negative commentary. It’s a show man, not a martial arts documentary! It’s meant to entertain! I only watch for her reactions, which are great 👍

The whole point Jaby's trying to make is that these kids couldn't POSSIBLY be black belts with the little training they've had. I feel like this is problematic to the core essence of the original Karate Kid. Mr. Miyagi made several points about how Karate has nothing to do with a belt system. He steals a black belt for Daniel to use in the tournament. MIYAGI: "Daniel-san. Karate here. (points to head). Karate here. (points to heart). Karate never here. (points to waist). Understand?" Daniel even reiterates this lesson to a young Sam in a flashback in the 2nd episode. Anyways, love y'all's content. Just had to be argumentative.

It's amazing how the show keeps telling us Miguel is the best when he's only won 1 karate tournament🤣 and he beat Robby in the finals because Hawk injured him and Miguel also fought dirty

To help you suspending your disbelief, take a few things into consideration: - The fight on the central mat was only for quarter finals and above - The belt system, this tournament only focuses on black belt, but the three main dojos have simply been cheating their way into it, in the same way they've done so in the very first movie with Mr. Miyagi stole a belt while distracting the registration desk. Johnny basically claimed all his 6 students were blackbelt because he wanted to make as much points as possible - Burt is indeed tiny, but Johnny enrolled him by claiming he was a black belt even though he really isn't, so of course he isn't paired against fair fights. It's also mostly for comedic value, much like in the first season, he was fighting against someone who could litterally leap above and over him. - Cobra Kai vs Cobra Kai, fighters are spread across the elimination board, and two of the same dojo simply ended up facing each other in quarter finals. Even in the original movie, Johnny spoke of having foght one of his friends in a semi-final the year before. By the way, that kick in the back, the referee called "No point!" Don't let your real experience prevent you from enjoying this piece of entertainment!

There was no protective gear in the karate kid movies either, weird you're harping on that so much. And there are current karate tournaments with no gear. Kick to the face but no punches.

Jaby, have you ever watched the "Rocky" movies? That is all bullshit. No way guys get pummeled like that without them stopping the fight. But it's entertainment!

There is a Karate sensei reviewing this series, he think many of the moves are quite legit.

what I love about the discussion between Daniel and Robbie in this episode is that both of them are correct. there is so much nuance in that conversation and it's beautiful. I also really love that angel and devil on the shoulder moment with Sam when she was fighting Piper. such great visual storytelling! ❤️

as predictable as you think this show is, its not. it subverts expectations from day one. from making our protagonists super aggressive/bullies to having the leads not always win

These are short episodes, we didn't need to see them do a wide variety of training, it made for a good surprise for the double episode season finale to see them have new moves and work with weapons. We barely see them train with normal kicks anyway, it's just a few minutes here and there, so we know they're training a lot more than what we see. I don't why Jaby is making everything so complicated lol

well i dont know about new competitions but when i was in high school i NEVER saw sparring gear. i had no idea that was a thing. but 20 years ago this is how the karate competitions i watched on espn were shown, no gloves or helmets

I think when you get to the semi finals, it makes sense to do those one at a time.

I used to do karate and we didn't have protective gear in our tournaments so it makes complete sense here Jaby. I have seen it's mainly done in taekwondo tournaments but in karate, it was optional for us and during practice, we were trained to be tough without protective gear (fun fact: in my karate dojo our sensei would punch us in the stomach and we had to tighten our core as much as possible to resist and of course, we did work on our abs for it). Also, protective gear restricts our movement a lot and personally, I don't like it. And yes you are right, the opponents are put up against each other depending on weight and a small kid would not face a huge kid in real life.

It's supposed to be under 18 so I guess the kid that looks likea man compared to Bert could be a couple years older. I was 6'2" at 13 or 14 so it's possible he just fully grew faster or Bert even though he's short thats as tall as he'll get, but I think he is a little taller than earlier seasons. Bert is in highschool at least, Kenny is in middle school. You have different sized kids in highschool, Kenny is the more unfair one. I guess it's just supposed to be theres only one trophy for boys one for girls and it's as long as your under age they are all supposed to be going for the same trophy. I would think there would still be some kind of class system or age brackets they way they are doing it what you'd have a 10 or 11 year old he'd have to face a 17 year old if he made it far enough along. I guess we're just supposed to overlook things

When Daniel is teaching Miyagi Do, he's trying to impart a philosophy preaching non violence unless you're cornered, show compassion and mercy to everyone including your enemies. Robby didn't teach the Miyagi Do philosophy to the CK students, just the moves. So, he didn't do it in the "right spirit." This defense, however, does not apply to his interaction with Sam. She was trying to figure out how best to come out on top, so she drew on all her training. She had been trained by 2 senseis, not 1 sensei, and 1 student.

This show only has 10 episodes a year, so a lot is left out, including all the training in the demonstration skills. This show has to move fast, so one of the disadvantages is we don't see all the skills development. The kids are getting older quickly and the show can't afford to take it's time over the years fully fleshing out the details of how the kids get so good in learning karate.

I mean i see why you'd have trouble enjoying it as much as a casual viewer is that you're very much well versed into karate and stuff so it does become hard for one to suspend their disbelief when it comes to taking in everything without thinking too much. Still I'd suggest watching it in the same way as you saw the 80s trilogy because it pretty much carries the same spirit throughout the 4 seasons. Cobra Kai was never meant to be a super authentic study about Karate, it's only a means to an end in the show. It's mostly the drama that they're showcasing and if the fights are good, I take that as a bonus.

The character arcs are better than the tournament but we have to have a tournament and it is what builds to next season. I saw someone else mention the Japanese karate sensei that reacted to the series. He was fun and interesting to watch because he called many of the things out you did.

I took Taekwondo when I was a kid, then I took Shorin Ryu as an adult. Other styles gave me crap for Taekwondo, because they deemed it too "fancy". "A lot of flair." Which I get, but you gotta admit, it does look badass as hell.

I enjoyed this reaction. If there more students I dojo still in the competition eventually if they keep winning they'll have to face each other. You're right though about the protective gear. They do it for cinematic performance purposes. This show wants to show off the techniques with foot positions while kicking and getting the extra "flare" as you put it. The audience primarily are not experts in martial arts. It's purely for entertainment. THE KICK TO Kenny's back was "no point" because he kicked him in the back. He brought down with three points withe kick to the back not counting. Their trainers do mix martial arts styles to compliment their character's fighting style. I wouldn't be able to enjoy the show if I took the small things so seriously. Most people think the last two episodes are the best of the season.

its a round robin between dojos, if you both go undefeated yeah a tiny dude will go up against a bigger dude. this isnt boxing. its also keeping it old school 80s. the only restriction is you have to be under 18

I actually like Jaby's experience and input in fight scenes. It's one of the main reasons I subbed because it's a unique perspective that most other people never have a critical eye for or think to examine without becoming a video essay. So keep on doing what you're doing in my opinion.

the Underwood segment was so cringe

I too didn't like the flair in this season. Season 1 tournament was better. I don't know why the majority feels that season 4 fights are good, but all the slow motion shots in this season feel like a kind of dance. If they really are so impressive, why don't they show them in normal speed? Slow motion for one or two shots is ok, but literally every other kick or punch? That's style, but no substance, I didn't get the same feeling of excitement I got when miguel fought in season 1. In season 4, the flips and all and other flashy things were there(even those were in slow motion), but real moves were not there. All the flips in the world can be done by some wires, but showing a full kick and follow through(in this season whenever there is a awesome kick, they cut away and the beginning and the end are disjointed), or making the fights realistic is the real work. Perhaps Netflix constrained the time, which youtube red didn't do. That's one advantage of working without pressure.

They don't use protection in karate for real either. Full contact karate is without any protective gear. You should know this as a former martial artist even if you use helmets in Taekwondo
