Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is a 1999 American science fiction film written and directed by George Lucas. It stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ahmed Best, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Pernilla August, and Frank Oz. It is the fourth film in the Star Wars film series, the first film of the prequel trilogy and the first chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Set 32 years before the original trilogy (13 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire), during the era of the Galactic Republic, the plot follows Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi as they try to protect Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo in hopes of securing a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade dispute. Joined by Anakin Skywalker-a young slave with unusually strong natural powers of the Force-they simultaneously contend with the mysterious return of the Sith. The film was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

As for ages - Obi-Wan is 25 years old in this film. He is 57 in A New Hope. So we've gone back 32 years in this film. Anakin is 9. Padme is 14.

The ponytail is a Padawan braid. A Padawan is a Jedi apprentice basically. The braid is a mark of his rank. Once he becomes a Jedi, he will be able to cut it off.

36:20 Oh, he absolutely knows. He’s a Jedi, he can identify people by their essence. Liam is playing this perfectly, he knows about her charade and is going along with it with just the right amount of teasing. He’s not there to blow her cover and probably even admires her bravery here, but he’s no fool.

Sadly, Jake Lloyd who played Anakin in this film was bullied in school after this and quit acting a few years after this film. Additionally he has struggled with his mental health in the past though he is currently doing much better nowadays. The actor who provided the motion capture and voice for Jar Jar, Ahmed Best was also harassed for years after this film and it caused some mental health issues as well. He has also as of the last interviews he did gotten to a better place in his life and actually recently appeared as a Jedi in a Flashback on the Disney plus show the Mandalorian. A role where you can see his face.

The "rat tail" of Obi Wan shows that he is a padawan learner, an apprentice, not a Jedi Knight yet. The final fight, sounding "Duel of the fates", it´s one of the best in the franchise for me. Legendary.

Coby Actor, who portrays Darth Maul is Ray Park. Ray Park is actually stuntman, actor, and martial artist. He has portrayed other characters besides Darth Maul such as Toad from 2000's X-Men and Snake Eyes from GI Joe movies.

He's also the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow (the Tim Burton one) whenever it is headless - hence the two-axe scene. It was actually made at the same UK studio around the same time as The Phantom Menace and also has Ian McDiarmid in it, as he's playing the town's doctor (so Sleepy Hollow has three Sith lords in it - Maul, Ray Park, Sidious, Ian McDiarmid, and Dooku, Christopher Lee who plays an annoyed judge early on).

Darth Maul is physically portrayed by Ray Park (Toad in “X-Men (2000)”), and voiced by Peter Serafinowicz (Pete in “Shaun of the Dead”). Sabé, the main decoy for Queen Amidala is portrayed by a 13 year old Keira Knightly in her first major film. Natalie Portman was 17 during filming. Also, Sofia Coppola plays another of the queen’s handmaidens. The story is set 32 years before (32 BBY) the events of “A New Hope” (1 ABY). Obi-Wan is 25 (57 in ANH), Anakin/Vader is 9 (41 in ANH), Padmé/Amidala is 14.

What will really blow your mind is that quickly after they arrive on Tattoine, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan realize Padme = Queen Amidala. So he teases her a few times, like at the pod race when he says, “The queen trusts my judgement. You should too.”

@@davidbell1597 they could’ve made all of those story points without having the race be ten minutes long. Ten minutes of Anakin driving a pod. You know how much screen time the duel between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul has without the cut-aways to the other scenes? Four minutes and 35 seconds. Anakin diving a pod in a circle is over twice as long. The entire climax of the film from when Maul opens his lightsaber to when Obi-wan cuts him in half, including the battle in the palace and the entire space battle is 13 minutes long. The pod race is the most unnecessarily long scene ever committed to film.

"The Phantom Menace" is set approximately 33 years before "A New Hope". Anakin is 9 in Episode I, 19 in 9 in Episode II, and 22 in Episode III. By the time of Episode IV, Anakin (now crowned Darth Vader) is about 42. As for his conception, George Lucas said that he intended the young version of Anakin to be a "reversed Christ figure". So he added things like a non-typical birth, increased sensitivity to the Force, and a massive power level that eventually makes his mind unstable.

Happy Birthday ! So you were born when Return of the Jedi was still playing in theaters. It came out in '83, but all the Star Wars movies stayed in the cinema for at least a year. Even after the main theaters took them off, they would go to the discount theaters and Midnight showings for a couple of months before they went to video. There's a little Birthday / Star Wars connection for you

For those of us who watched the originals in theaters and had them on VHS, and DVD, seeing the opening crawl on opening day was a trancendent experience. I stood in line as an intern, getting paid, to buy tickets a week in advance, and I got paid to wait in line to hold seats for our 7 person IT team. Also, 100% this movie won the Academy Award Best Sound Effects Editing based on the podrace scene. In theaters it was absolutely nuts.

The fictional meta-lore of Star Wars is that George Lucas got the story of the Skywalkers from the Journal of the Whills, a broad record of galactic history kept by the Whills. The Skywalker saga was of such galactic significance that it received a greater level of detail in the Journal, with information the Whills received directly from R2D2 who was there to record the entire series of events. This is similar to how JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is simply his translation of what Bilbo, Frodo and Sam wrote down thousands of years ago. 😊

It's pretty sad really and should be a cautionary tale to any young actor about how the press, a fanbase and industry more widely can have a very negative impact on child actors.

The actor who played Anakin Skywalker in Phantom Menace was Jake Lloyd, who previously appears in a few episodes of ER and the movie "Jingle All the Way" which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. He actually got out of acting some time after Phantom Menace due to some harassment he suffered in school.

The nine-year-old Anakin and Jar Jar Binks were Disney artifacts inserted into Lucas' script that forced him to create "Midichlorians" and such. In the original script, Anakin was written as an adolescent, closer in age to Padme Amidala.

The face of Darth Maul was one of the biggest images promoting this film, so George just kills him off yet Jar Jar survives to the end. Lucas has a weird sense of humour.

37:08 Good eye! Ashley "Warwick" Davis! Played the "first" Ewok (Wicket W Warrick) in ORTJ and the titular role in the movie Willow. Davis has of course played several small-statured characters in the SWU, and other films. He is also the evil little imp in the Leprechaun horror franchise. I sometimes got him confused with another dwarf actor from the 80s, David Rappaport.

So you are absolutely correct that Natalie Portman is Queen Amidala, but her "decoy" is Kira Knightley, and while on set, in makeup, even their mothers confused them.

Happy Birthday! Great review. This was such a monumental Star Wars movie as we had not seen anything since 1983. The CGI may not hold up, but the story had exciting components to it!

Happy Birthday! Looking forward to your thoughts on this movie, and the rest of the prequel trilogy. When this was first released, there were some mixed reviews (mostly negative about the "trade war/political" aspect), thought it was mostly liked by fans...until a few years later, where the sentiment soured quite a bit. Since that time the prequel trilogy has grown on me by a lot, and I do enjoy the overall story arc of the primary important characters.

Interesting fact about the pod race. The actor who played Wicket (the first ewok in Return of the Jedi) is in the crowd, and so is Indiana Jones.

I was 13 years old in May 1999 and had been a Star Wars fan for most of my life, so needless to say this one was a pretty big deal to me. I had just grown-out of my action figure collecting days, but I figured I should at least get one from Episode I, so I got one of a Battle Droid which I thought were just the coolest design; still do. But by the time Episode III came out in 2005, I was old enough to think this one was… kinda dumb. But then every few years I’d rewatch it and as I got older my appreciation for it really started to grow and now I say say I really do love this one.
