Return of the Jedi (1983)
Return of the Jedi (also known as Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi) is a 1983 American epic space opera film that is the sequel to Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). It is the third installment in the original Star Wars trilogy and the sixth chronological film in the "Skywalker Saga". It is directed by Richard Marquand based on a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas from a story by Lucas, who was also the executive producer. As the Rebels attempt to destroy the Empire's second Death Star, Luke Skywalker hopes to bring his father, Darth Vader, back from the dark side of the Force. The film stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew and Frank Oz.

It's funny. I was 11 when ROTJ came out. I was old enough to be fully immersed in Star Wars, and cognizant of a lot of details, but young enough to never see Leia as a sex symbol. I always loved Leia as a character. I suppose if I had been 5 or 10 years younger, I would not have been "along for the ride" with the original generation of Star Wars fans. If, however I had been 5 years older, I would likely have been much more impacted by seeing Leia in her "carbonite bikini".

The reason it was so "easy" to kill the Emperor was because he was so focused on killing Luke he couldn't "feel" Vaders intentions. As for why Vader died, the Emperor made Vaders suit very susceptible to lighting, to have power over him, and it short circuited Vaders breathing apparatus.
@joshjames582
@joshjames582 10 күн бұрын
Yeah. Under ordinary circumstances the Emperor could have killed any potential assailant with a thought. He was so fixated on Luke and so confident in Vader's subservience that he never contemplated his betrayal. He simply didn't understand his love for his son.
@dj_jx

@@joshjames582 Not only that. Vader could be saved, he also can call the force as save himself. But he chose to die so his self sacrifice atone for all the crimes he done and turn back to the light. Thus fulfilling the prophecy of the One and his role to destroy the Sith.

Every time I see the special edition of this film I just groan with Vader saying “no”. Originally he didn’t say anything before turning on the emperor. To me it works so much better that way, a man silently in a struggle within himself and in that silence seeing his son being murdered sacrifices himself to save his son. Way better than the very operatic “nooooo!”

100%! I hate all the "Special Editions". Not only do they make the story weaker but ironically the CGI has not stood up as well as the practical effects. The wampa scene in the ice cave was better before when you couldn't really see it, Han and Greedo scene was better (much better arc for Han), the Jabba scene outside the Falcon was stupid and superfluous, etc., and as you say the "no" takes away from that scene. That is what happens when there is nobody around that will say no to George... we get the "Special Editions" and the PT.

Yes, this is the first time we as an audience got to see Jabba back in 1983. The Jabba scene in A New Hope was originally shot with a human actor playing Jabba, who Lucas intended to replace via bluescreen with a stop-motion animated creature. He ran out of time and couldn't make it the way he wanted, so he cut the scene. In 1997 the scene was added back in for the Special Edition of the movie(along with other changes), using a CGI Jabba that looked like crap. In 2004 for the DVD release a new, better-looking CGI Jabba which is what you see now. In the original scene Han walked behind the human actor, with the CGI Jabba the footage was manipulated to make it look like Han is stepping on Jabba's tail.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about five miles away ..._ *EPISODE VI* *JABBA THE HUTT, THE GOVERNOR, AND THE BANGIN' NEW SOUND SYSTEM* I saw _Return of the Jedi_ in the Stuart (now Roccoco) Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska. She took up the first six floors of the 10-story Stuart Building. Like many theaters of her era, the Stuart had once been a live theater later converted to cinema. She originally hosted the local symphony orchestra, theatrical companies, operas, touring companies, vaudeville, etc. When she was converted to cinema, they sold her backstage area. Today, it's a theater-themed night club: _The Barrymore_ . The Stuart was one of those Grand Dame theaters: six stories high, three balconies, box seats, hand woodworking, and gold and silver inlays everywhere. There was a gigantic chandelier over the main floor. She seated 1,850. She was truly a beautiful sight to behold. At the time I saw _Jedi_ , she had a bangin' new sound system -- which is a good time for a flashback ... _Slightly longer ago, at a High School about three miles away ..._ It was my Senior year in High School, and I was several days from graduating. The school held an assembly to acknowledge honor students, which I wasn't. Along with hundreds of other students, I'd be bored out of my mind for the next three hours. Then it hit me, like a flash of lightning: _The Stuart Theater is offering free admission to an obscure movie, so that they can show off her bangin' new sound system_ . After weighing my options, I decided to go do the Stuart Theater. I mean, what were they going to do, give me detention? I was graduating in a few days! As everyone else went to the school auditorium, I went in the opposite direction, to the school's main exit. However, as I was walking down the hall, who should be approaching but the Principal, two Vice-Principals, and the Governor of the State of Nebraska. The Governor was scheduled to give some kind of speech about how wonderful life is and we have so much ahead of us, blah blah blah. I assumed my goose was cooked. The Principal and his Vices knew precisely where I was supposed to be, and it wasn't headed out the door. What I hadn't counted on was that admonishing me in front of the Governor would be embarrassing for the Principal. I'm sure they told the Governor how squeaky-clean the school was, how the students are all fantastic, how there were never any problems, etc. To admonish me would be to destroy the propaganda. So we simply passed each other. I politely said hello to the Governor and nodded to the Principal and his Vices. They gave me angry hellos between clenched teeth. And then I walked out the door, hopped in my Chevy Chevette, and went to the Stuart. _Meanwhile, back at Return of the Jedi ..._ The Stuart's bangin' new sound system was not only bangin', it was astonishing. Imagine hearing Maestro John Williams' brilliant score as it shook the entire theater. It was no less impressive than a live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra. But that wasn't even the half of it. When Jabba had his first line, " *Bo shudda* ," the bass shook the rafters and thundered throughout the whole building. I recall being in the middle seat, of the first row, of the first balcony with some friends. The floor and guardrail shook like a minor earthquake. It doesn't matter how good your home sound system is, the music isn't reverberating the steel support beams of a 10-story building. I sat there for two hours just waiting for good bass, and was never disappointed. I mean, at the very least there was the London Symphony Orchestra performing the score, as composed and conducted by Maestro John Williams! So while this wasn't as immersive as the Indian Hills Theater for _A New Hope_ , it was sill impressive! *Bo shudda!*

Interesting fact: The scenes where Lando is talking to the alien copilot on the Millennium Falcon. Lando asks a question in English and the copilot responds in an "alien" language, right? When it was shown in Africa audiences were cracking up! The alien language is Swahili. They were phrases from a translation book. Lando says something important and the alien asks "Where is the bathroom?" etc.. 😂

I stand by that this is one of the greatest redemption stories of all time when it comes to Vader, counterintuitively. This guy was practically the boogeyman of Star Wars. He was ruthless, cruel, and vicious in his conquests, both to his enemies and his allies. There is not one instance in the three movies where it's even hinted at that there is still good in him, he doesn't do a single good thing. The most we get is that he used to be a good man. But Luke is the first and only one to say he still is. And every reactor says the same thing when Luke says it "What the hell are you thinking?" Then Luke and Vader talk on the bridge and we get the first sign of humanity from Vader. "It is...too late for me, son." The way James Early Jones delivers that line is so subtle but implies the emotions going through his head. Then the scene ends with Vader looking off in the distance, and the body language is such that there is some sadness to him, or else a longing on what could have been. But we still see no evidence of good in him. But inevitably by the time the Emperor is electrocuting Luke, every reactor does the same thing. "COME ON!!! SAVE HIM!!!" He does. And it is the sole proof that we as an audience need that Luke was right. People go from thinking it's crazy to think Vader would do this for his son to begging Vader themselves and feeling so in awe and relief that he actually does. And many are in tears by the time of Vader's funeral. I repeat, the absolutely terrifying, imposing, villain who was part of an evil fascist dictatorship makes people cry at his funeral. I'm actually shocked at how effective of a change this is to get through to so many people with so little. And I fully credit this to visual filmmaking and a certain style of storytelling that is fading into obscurity where you didn't need a full backstory to understand a character

Leia was not originally going to be Luke's sister. Luke's sister was instead going to be someone we never meet in the original trilogy. She was going to be the subject of sequels. She was going to be someone already turned to the dark side, and the trilogy was going to be Luke travelling to an as yet unseen part of the galaxy to try to turn her back like he did with his father. However, Lucas said he had so many struggles and issues with just trying to get the original three films made that by the time he got to Return of the Jedi he just wanted to be done with Star Wars altogether, and so during preproduction he changed the story to make Leia the sister. It works as long as you don't think too much about it. A sequel trilogy about Luke's sister would have been much better though

He had a blue Bic biro pen in his leather-gloved hand and I was so impressed that the Empire used Bic biros just like the rest of us. Bodybuilder David Prowse played Darth Vader when he was fully in the suit and helmet. When Luke removes his helmet, he's played by actor Sebastian Shaw. The "Force ghost" of Anakin at the end is played by Hayden Christensen. Having Anakin's ghost revert to his younger self represents Anakin's redemption, returning his spirit to when he was a good man, before he fell to the Dark Side and became Vader. Of course, Christensen was added to the movie long after Return of the Jedi had been released, as Shaw originally appeared as Anakin's ghost until Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released.

On the Leia and Luke being siblings thing. I'll give them credit that it was not the original plan. If it was, I think they would have worked it differently, obviously. That being said, I do think the twist is important. I used to be able to explain this thought well, and I'm not able to anymore, so bear with me. Luke's story goes from "Can Luke defeat this great evil" to "Will Luke become this great evil" and then to "Can Luke save Vader?" That last question cannot be addressed until the second one is, and we know Luke well enough that the only thing that would cause him to turn is his love for his friends and family. Vader therefore needs a reason to go after someone in Luke's life, but someone who is terribly important. Leia being Luke's sister is the most dangerous role she could have. It's not just that she's going to be killed, they're going to try to turn her (for anyone who knows what goes into that training, not fun). So not only does this add a level of protection on Luke's side for her, it paints a target on her back much worse than before, and Luke knows it. If she was just someone he cared about who happened to be force sensitive, Vader and the Emperor wouldn't have pursued her half as much as they would knowing she's Vader's child. This was their trump card and it's the only thing that could have pushed Luke to the dark side as it so nearly does. I And when he is pushed to the dark side, and he sees that he is following Vader down his path, that's the moment of truth. The moment Luke wins by denying his destiny and throwing his lightsaber away, and without which Vader could not have been turned. On a side note, someone came up with an in universe explanation on Luke and Leia "knowing" they were siblings. They theorized that they felt a connection to each other through the Force but didn't know what it was, so they assumed it was attraction. But when Leia kissed Luke, they felt something was wrong and so they didn't pursue it any further. Quite frankly, it's the only explanation I've heard that makes it less weird

The man in the Darth Vader suit was David Prowse a very tall British bodybuilder. If you ever watch "a clockwork orange" he plays the personal assistant of a man who the characters have beaten. Loved your OT reactions. Keep it real Coby, it will serve you well. ;) As for Leia's outfits, specifically her gold one... that is a slave outfit (chain and collar) and Jabba has had many slave girls (green girl at the start of RotJ was also collared and chained). The reason it fit is because there would be a whole collection from which they would choose one to fit her. Yes, all the boys loved and still love Leia in her slave outfit. ;) I can't explain the Ewok dress though (especially since Ewoks did not have woven cloth knowledge). "Empire" is and will always be my favorite (love all the OT though). Sorry to break it too you but no, the Ewoks were not universally loved, that is mostly a chick and kid thing. Oh, one last thing... Luke seeing his father's mechanical hand and then looking at his own made him realize that he was starting down the same path as his father (becoming him) which helped him turn from the Dark Side. EDIT: OK, one last last thing. 😆 The reason Yoda died so close to Luke returning is he was using the force to help keep himself alive until Luke returned. Once he did and he parted the knowledge he had to, he let go.

I watched this in 1983, and back then there was no CGI beak for the Sarlacc, it was just a pit lined with teeth and tentacles, the dance routine was merely Oola dancing for him, and then spurning his advances hence why she was fed to the Rancor in the pit underneath Jabba's throne room, Vader was silent when he finally changed sides and saved Luke grabbing the Emperor and throwing him over the edge. The CGI beak and the song and dance routine and Vader shouting no before he acts, were added for the Special Edition releases in 1997. He also added the celebrations across the galaxy to the Special Edition, and further tweaked this by adding Christian Hayden in a 2004 update. The original celebrations just the the Rebel and the Ewoks celebrating back on the Forest Moon with the Ewoks "Jub Jub" song. Edit, changed 1984 to 1983 as I was still at school when this came out. Originally, this movie was going to be titled "Revenge of the Jedi". They even made the theater posters and promotional buttons with that title on them. But then George Lucas or someone else close to him remembered that revenge is the path to the dark side, so the title of the movie was changed to "Return of the Jedi". My first job was as an usher at a movie theater. I was hired for what they anticipated would be huge crowds for "Return of the Jedi". And yes, there were weeks worth of sold-out shows at my little four theater cinema with line stretching out into the mall. Before the movie's release, we had a chain wide training session held at the famous Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. After that training session, some of my fellow trainees and I went to a shop in Hollywood where I found one of those "Revenge of the Jedi" official buttons. I bought it. I've never had it appraised, but I'm sure it is worth quite a bit.

@BDogg2023 I agree. It was an incredible experience seeing movies there. I've seen several Star Wars, Star Trek, MCU, movies on that screen. Sad that its owner, Arclight Theaters, went out of business due to the pandemic. I really miss seeing movies there. But I just read that new owners are planning to reopen it sometime next year (according to "Variety").

I really would like it if Coby watched the Unspecialized versions of the original trilogy. Not for another set of reactions, but just to sort out the CGI nonsense and prequel references that were shoved in there.

The amazing thing about this is how these are based on the traditional action shorts. However, Luke’s victory over the evil Emperor wasn’t from his destruction. It was through an act of compassion for his enemy.

The original triology will always be the heart of Star Wars! 🙂 Coby, the scenes on Endor with the ewoks were recorded in the far north of California, in the Redwood Forest! For example the scenes with the speeders were filmed at Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, Owen R. Cheatham Grove. Apparently a guy recorded the scene while walking through the forest, and for the movie it is played back at 24 frames per second so it looks fast! Unfortunately, the other scenes, with the ewoks, were filmed on private land (obviously they couldn't mess up a national park! 🙂) that has since been logged! IMDB says these are the co-ordinates: 41°54'49.2"N, 124°07'31.4"W. It's by Crescent City, just south of Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The Google Maps Satellite View looks like the forest has actually grown back. I have to go out there at some point and see if you can go there or if the property owners call the CHP on you, lol. 🙂

At the time George wrote A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, George didn't have the idea to make Luke and Leia brother and sister. When someone asked him about it after this, he laughted and said "Yeah, well, ignore that. lol"

I heard that too, but we know in TESB Yoda states "There is another" and Luke uses the Force to contact Leia when he is hanging from Cloud City. Seems like Lucas at least was planting the seeds of the possibility.

@@kickballjedi It might seem that way, but nope. Lucas in fact did not think of them as brother and sister until he was writing the screenplay for Return of the Jedi, after Empire was released. He planned to introduce a new character as the sister, but then realized it was too much extra work to fit in and just made Leia the sister. Fans like to retcon things to try and make sense, and some things might seem more plausible than others, but the fact is that it wasn't an idea until after Empire.

The practical, movie making reason for the green lightsaber, was that it showed up better against the blue Tatooine sky. The in universe answer is that lightsaber colors are attuned to the type of Jedi. Blue for Jedi guardians, green for Jedi consulars. Guardians are more action oriented, where as consulars focused on negotiation, and compassion, before resorting to fighting. It's a little deeper than that, but that's the quick answer.

I was 7 when Star Wars came out and 13 when Return of the Jedi came out. Old enough to understand the emotions behind Darth Vader finally breaking the Emperor's hold on him to save his son. Now, as an old man, I understand Vader's sacrifice even more. I would give up everything I am, everything I own to save my son if I saw him in pain and close to death. Very excellent review, Coby, your training is complete.

@@nsasupporter7557 I'll admit I was not a huge fan of the PT when it first came out. I did like some aspects of TPM and I thought RotS wrapped things up pretty well. Now I have come to appreciate the PT much more since the ST came out and was so bad. At least Lucas had a fully fleshed out story and character arcs.

It was decades of watching these movies before I heard someone point out how hard it must have been for Leia to hear vader was her father, because in the first movie he tortured her. That completely changed how I see that scene where Luke tells her, all the things she must have been feeling at that point...
