Thank you so much for this video. I never thought I would be a bird dad. I went to a pet store today with the intention of buying a pair of hermit crabs, but I absolutely fell in love with a cockatiel that I met. I knew the moment that he pressed his head against the cage, asking me to pet him, that we were meant for each other. Due to a big purchase earlier in the week, I couldn't afford to pay for him and his essentials outright, so I paid part of it and I will be picking up my little friend at the end of the week. I've already decided to name him Winston. He doesn't know it yet, but he's about to be welcomed into a loving home with a companion for the rest of his life

Thank you! They can be naughty when they want to be but they re just so cute! 😍 If you look in the video description at the bottom, there's a link to bathing training by Birdtricks which might help to get your little one interested in baths! My boys never liked the spray bottle but with time, patience and a little training, they usually accept it now. They seem to only prefer it one a week (because they are smelly little boys haha!) but I also respect when they just aren't in the mood so I don;t force them! They sometimes self bathe in their water bowls but not often!

I'm very much a noob when it comes to keeping birds, I started in October last year :P Now perhaps I heard wrong...but I think you said "people being apprehensive" about feeding fresh vegetable and fruits, if one can't do this...then one is unfit to keep the animal in question. I fed my finches seeds exclusively, but that was from a point of not knowing any better. Now I do, and there is no way I will ever go back to just feeding seeds again. Granted I can only speak from experience (short as it is) with the finches, but they seem more vibrant, more content and I feel the flock is just happier overall. I just got 2 cockatiels 5 days ago, and abviously this is a completly different caliber of bird. I spend time with all my birds, I sit and talk to them, maybe eat fruits or veggies while I also offer chop to the birds. The idea is that I eat what they eat, unsure if this makes a difference...but the idea is thatthey can watch me do my thing, and not be on full alert and attentive to the birds every second. Pretend that I'm busy with my own stuff, so they get to watch me a lot. I will leave the cage door open to the cockatiels, so they can come out if they want to. So far, things have gone well. Or at least as well as can be expected, perhaps in a month or two they will be fully setteled in here. I think the fact that I already had finches helps, they are used to me now and do not scare as long as I move slow and gentle around them :) Now I have a few animals, but I think perhaps the birds are on top of my list if I had to pick a favourite. And this is mainly because they can do what I always wished I could do....fly :D

@@BirdNerdSophie Indeed, most people really know little to nothing about birds and their needs, and so we go with the "package deal" from a local pet shop. I learned early on with aquarium fish that I usually knew a lot more then the person selling, and ever since then I try to do my own research. I find a few good and reliable sources, and then I brows others now and then...but I am looking to find my "go toos", it takes a while to plow through the bs. I would say my learning curve in birds have been rather steep, but I'm willing to go above and beyond to learn and understand. And I like most people dislike to be told I do things wrong, but sometimes I do...and don't even know it. So yeah, we need people who know, who has the experience and the guts to let us now we are failing when we do :)

Thanks for making this video, it's been very helpful, I've had my two boys here since they were eggs, they are about 3yo now, I do give them a good variety of food, but they tend to be very difficult when it comes to trying new food like different types of vegetables or some other cooked soft food, they will not touch if it's not familiar, they also do not like to bath! They will never get in a water bowl no matter how many times it's made available to them, they don't like the spray either, If you have any tips, it will be highly appreciated. Thanks very much. Hadi

I want a cockatiel so bad but I'm a dad of 2 cats. One question, could cockatiels live in a cage with a wooden frame? And what kind of cage bars should you avoid?
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Cats are awesome too! I wouldn't get a wooden frame as they'll be able to chew it and it'll be hard to keep clean! Stainless steel bars are the safest if you are making it yourself, otherwise go with a reputable cage manufacturer! And the bar spacing should be 5/8"

Hi Sophie! Thanks for pointing out that they're NOT s.c "beginner birds". I personally find it a lot more challenging to look after a cockatiel than say for example a cat or dog. I have a couple of questions! We have a rescue cockatiel that was sadly separated from another cockatiel. She has become extremely attached to me over the past week (baby noises, no longer afraid of my hands, super clingy, requires HOURS of active interaction daily) and she's so responsive to training which is lovely! I am worried about how she'll feel once i start my graduate return to work. I really want to adopt a new bird for her to bond with. How soon can I do so, in order for her to safely accept the addition? To avoid breeding etc, i'd like to get another female. Is this a good idea, or does it make it harder for them to bond? Is there a video you'd recommend about how to introduce a new bird? You and David have been incredible in our journey and Bibi enjoys responding to the calls from your beautiful boys! Much love from Australia.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes I don't believe any bird is a 'beginner' bird! You could introduce one now, and yes the same gender is usually best if you are worried about breeding! You'd need to quarantine the new bird in another room for 30 days to make sure it doesn't have any health issues that could be transferred to your current bird, then you can follow the tips from David's video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zqh2prh4yNbUm2w.html

@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jackie, I have never hand raised a cockatiel before so I can only direct you to other sites. Here is a link to hand reading: www.cockatiel.com/handfeeding.html You can start the weaning process now by offering spray millet, a bowl of seeds and a bowl of finely chopped safe vegetables - if you offer vegetables at the weaning stage, it will be more likely to eat them when it’s older. You can keep it in a smaller cage until you see it start to climb the bars and explore and that will usually be when it’s almost fully weaned. At this point it will also be able to learn to fly and it will instinctively now what to do. You can spend time with it but make sure it has a chance to rest too - 12 hours of sleep is a must! Here is a video on how to bond with your bird: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7aPhadotayufZc.html

Hey, thank you for the video. It was really informative. We were thinking of getting a cockatiel and a few questions arose. Are cocktails ok for intermediate bird pet owners (have owned budgie before) or is it too adventurous? And can the cockatiel be left alone for around 6-8 hours (school, work, etc)? Is it better to get a baby cockatiel or an older one? Thank you so much for answering and hope you stay safe.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! 😁💙🦜 a cockatiel would be okay for an intermediate bird owner! However a single bird would not do well on it's own for 6-8 hours consistently. It might work if you can have 2+ cockatiels in a huge flight cage so they could socialise and exercise throughout the day. Babies can sometimes be easier to bond with, but they can just as easily be erratic and fearful. You could consider contacting bird rescue centres as many young cockatiels are looking for forever homes!

Hi Drake! Thanks for watching! Cats can be an issue with birds if they are out of their ages - if the birds can have supervised out of the cage time without the cats being in the room, that would be fine. How old is your sister? Can she be trusted not to let the birds out unsupervised or grab them?

Hi Sara, that’s so cool that you are getting two cockatiels! If you are hoping for them to have babies, will you have enough space to keep them? Hi there, thanks for your kind words! 😊 Have you tried any of these tips to see if you can locate your bird? www.herebird.com/lost-parrot/ It will take some time to adjust to their flock mate being gone if you can't find him. The best thing you can do for them is act normal and keep them busy - plenty of safe toys, training and treats! If you'd like to introduce another budgie to your flock, make sure you quarantine it for at least 30 days elsewhere in the house in case it starts showing signs of illness as you don't want your current birds getting sick from a new one! Also be prepared that it might not get along with your current birds, so you'll need to make sure you have enough space to have another cage to house it in if that's the case.
